Got a clean junkyard pull in the basement. Came out of a 940. No use to me since I switched to aftermarket. I live in the St Louis area, drop me an email to ericjcromer@yahoo.com

[RWD] [900] [1993] info on add on side turn signals -posted by- howdy_doody

I bought the cheapy aftermarket ones off ebay. They don't include bulb holders, so I had to go to the junkyard and get some that fit. Got some side marker bulb holders off an early 90's GM vehicle. They were made of a rubbery material that fit snugly in the marker lens.

Everything else was easy, I wired mine to be on with the parking lights, a little "glitzy" at night but I guess it's safer for my daughter to drive.

[RWD] [900] [1994] What does these pressure and fan changes tell me about AC system? -posted by- howdy_doody

You may have too much 134A in there, these systems are very sensitive to too much refridgerant.

I would jump the fan switch on the radiator so it runs all the time and see what your pressures are with the compressor cycling on and off.

[RWD] [900] [1993] Front caliper bracket pin frozen in bracket and should I change front brake hoses -posted by- howdy_doody

I put new hoses on mine. Cracked hoses will fail a vehicle inspection if you have them where you live. The steel line threading into the hose is really hard to unscrew, vice grips will be your friend on this one. On the RH one, I actually took the line off the car (fortunately it was a short line running up to the ABS block fitting) and heated it with a torch to get it out. Not fun work but I feel better about my brakes.

Agree with your decision on the calipers. I got mine from Rockauto.com, Raybestos brand with new brackets, and they fit like a charm. My old calipers and brackets were a rusted lump.

[RWD] [S90-V90] Air conditioner takes a break on hot/humid days -posted by- howdy_doody

Some cars have a gap at the compressor clutch that must be within a specified tolerance or the clutch will disengage. The clutch will wear over time and the gap will increase. The fix is to take a shim out behind the compressor clutch, or install a new clutch. This might be what is happening.

Actually, the air bag system on any vehicle before 1999 is overpowered and has resulted in several decapitations. They're especially dangerous for children and smaller adults. They're designed for a 180 pound, unbelted, adult male.

[RWD] [900] [1995] replacing cup holder in center console -posted by- howdy_doody

I just saw a 1995 or 96 960 at the junkyard and it had the side by side cupholder. Much sturdier but no rear cupholder. Also, the console box and latch would need to be swapped to convert a non-cupholder or a fore-aft cupholder. I did like the design better, sturdier and didn't get in the way of heater swiches or ebrake.

[RWD] [900] Help me understand -posted by- howdy_doody

They are a screaming deal on any Volvo brand parts. For example, the cat back exhaust. My local dealer couldn't touch their price. Not so good on parts that can easily be purchased from OEM suppliers. I suspect that center bearing is made by some OEM supplier that also sells the same part to outside vendors, like FCP Groton. You just have to shop around a bit to know for sure.

[RWD] [900] Massive oil leak -posted by- howdy_doody

Lot's of info on this seal in the FAQ or by searching. You have to drive a pin out of the distributor drive, which can be very difficult, then find the right seal. You might find it easier to find an old dry distributor in a junkyard.

[RWD] [900] Massive oil leak -posted by- howdy_doody

If your's is like most 940's, than you probably have the distributor mounted on the back of the cylinder head. If so, there are two o-rings on the distibutor shaft and body that should be replaced. There's also a seal inside the distributor that might be the problem, but it's a pain to replace and it should be apparent if this is the problem if there is oil inside the distributor itself.

You might also put RTV around the base of the distributor because the o-rings on the body are a pretty loose fit into the head and new o-rings may not cure it completely.

Because of the odd angle of the oil pan relative to the engine block, it is very possible that oil is leaking past the gasket (this isn't very likely on most vehicles). So you may need to replace it also. The replacement gaskets are segmented, so it's possible to replace this gasket without fully dropping the pan (good because it's a real pain).

The good news is none of these fixes are very expensive...I think the oil pan gasket was $7 at Autozone.

[RWD] [900] [1995] Key replacement question -posted by- howdy_doody

That's funny, when I tried to get a key made for my 92 940, West County said they didn't have the machine to cut the key. It's a steel key that can't be ground, the machine that cut it actually punches the notches out to of the key. West County sent me to Brentwood.

This is a few months ago so I suppose they may have gotten a key machine now. The key cutter that Brentwood Volvo had looked like some antique out of the 50's.

[RWD] [700] Connecting External Music Source to Factory Audio System -posted by- howdy_doody

Us 900 owners with the CR814 can't even use a tape adaptor, because the deck has a tape sensing system that kicks it out. That's why I just spent $80 on an auxilary input adaptor made by Soundgate (AUXMSTVL1V3). Anyone have experience with these?

Wish I'd seen this thread before I invested in this adaptor...
