<title>[AWD] [850] [1995] na 850 engine performance -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>I am somewhat a rookie on owning and servicing my own Volvo. Here is my 2 cents worth. This website has great information on your car, take your time and get familiar with it.

With the na 855&#x27;s I feel it is the most important to be sure your car is up to date with servicing, especially the timing belt and related accessories, I would also replace the waterpump at the time of replacing the timing belt, use Genuine Volvo parts. The breather system needs to be checked and replaced if necessary. Plugs, cap, rotor and wires should be replaced as well. and stick with what Volvo uses, Volvo plugs, bosch rotor and cap and OEM wires. Replace your air filter with a K &#x26; N, these are great filters.. Also, I used a pint of auto-rx, following manufactures directions, this stuff works! I&#x27;m a guy who only believes in Sea-Foam and no other additives, auto-rx has cleaned my engine up, it runs smoother and more efficient, and my check engine light went out.

My &#x27;96 855 na with 148k is running awesome, and I&#x27;ve done all the work with the help of these great people, if I can do it, you can too. As far as upgrades for more performance, I think you are very limited without the turbo model. You can always do suspension upgrades for better handling, but I&#x27;ll say I&#x27;m happy with mine just the way it is...stock.

<title>[AWD] [850] &#x27;96 855 rear main seal repair... -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>Thanks Dee Jay! I&#x27;ll post everyone on what I decide. First I am going to replace the &#x22;breather&#x22; components with the kit from Groton, it needs it anyway, its at the mileage where Volvo says it needs servicing. Once I get that done I will change the oil and use Mobil 1, I think Mobil one has a high mileage formula now as well. Anyway, then I&#x27;ll keep an eye on things and see where I&#x27;ll go from there. I was always (before I owned Volvo&#x27;s) a Amsoil fanatic, but Mobil 1 is getting great reviews and Amsoil is really out-pricing themselves, it has become partially a financial issue for me. Thanks again for your comments/advice!

<description>Hi,

Klaus, I&#x27;m guessing you&#x27;ll know the answer to this...I need to have the rear main seal replaced on my &#x27;96 855 and I&#x27;m not going to do it myself. Could you, or anyone recommend a good mechanic in the Twin Cities Metro Area that does these jobs???

Thank You!

<title>[AWD] [850] [1996] timing belt replacement -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>I want to make it clear that I rotated the engine by hand about 4 revolutions, no resistance. I put everything back together and started it up and I got what I think is a valve ticking, kind of on the loud side, I shut it down.

I&#x27;m assuming the t-belt is on correctly or it wouldn&#x27;t have hand rotated. I&#x27;m thinking the car has sat for over a month, sticky valve??? I just bought the car a couple of months ago and haven&#x27;t changed the oil yet, it needs it and is down about a quart, could this cause ticking? I haven&#x27;t added a quart because I don&#x27;t know what kind/viscosity the previous owner used, would it hurt to add some Mobil 1 10W-30?

Your guys have been so patient with me, and I&#x27;ve learned so much from you, I will become a financial contributor, on payday!

<title>[AWD] [850] [1996] timing belt replacement -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>Hi Klaus,

I have been going by the routing that Bay 13 says to use, I also drew a diagram before I removed the old belt, and the suggested way, and the way I diagramed is the same. I read somewhere that you can lock the tensioner, I&#x27;m going to see if I can do this, it might help me free up a hand...Thanks...

I got everything put back together and rotated the engine a few times by hand, everything lined up fine. Thanks for all your help, I will update this when I actually start the car...Thanks again...

<title>[AWD] [850] [1996] timing belt replacement -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>Hi Klaus,

Thanks for the information. I think what happened was I didn&#x27;t have the IPD lock in properly and when trying to pull the belt tight it slipped, turning the intake sprocket counter clockwise, then with the tool in place the tool turned the exaust sprocket CLOCKWISE...so you say I can just back them up into place? Even though one move clockwise and the other moved counter-clockwise?

I&#x27;m going to double check today to make sure the crank didn&#x27;t turn, last night I was overloaded! If the crank did turn, whats up then???

This is a first time for me, a very interesting challenge, hopefully not costly!

Thanks for all the help!

<title>[AWD] [850] [1996] timing belt replacement -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>Hi Lee,

Thanks for the note. I didn&#x27;t crank the engine with the starter, I wouldn&#x27;t do that until I hand cranked it a couple of revolutions.

I was trying to get the belt snug between the intake and exaust gears, I just can&#x27;t get it snug. If I push on the belt halfway between the gears the belt moves about 3/4 of an inch.

How do I &#x22;back up&#x22; the gears?

Thanks,

<title>[AWD] [850] [1996] timing belt replacement -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>Greetings,

I&#x27;ve been working on my 855 today, replacing the water pump and timing belt. I ran into a problem with the intake and exaust cam gears. the intake gear moved counter clockwise about 3 &#x22;teeth&#x22; - the exaust gear moved clockwise about the same, 3 teeth. I had an IPD tool holding the gears in place, and Im not quite sure how it happened but the tool slipped and the gears moved. (Gears or pulleys, my mind is mush at this point!) The crank gear didn&#x27;t move. Did I trash anything? How can I correct this??? Its been a tough day! HELP!!!

thanks,

<title>[AWD] [850] Frozen torx bolt on spark plug/wires/engine cover... -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>Hi,

I was removing the cover on top of my 850&#x27;s engine, the cover that covers the plugs and wires. One torx bolt stripped right out on me. I cut a groove inthe head and used multiple applications of PBlaster, and it still won&#x27;t budge. I read some articles on thermostat bolts being frozen and how to remove them, but couldn&#x27;t find anything on these cover bolts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

<title>[AWD] [850] waterpump gasket -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>This is timing belt weekend! I&#x27;m replacing the waterpump as well. My question is, do I need to use some kind of gasket sealer on the gasket? If so, what do you recommend?

Last weekend I repaired the spot welds on the pillar so my drivers door doesn&#x27;t clunk clunk...I used the bolt method that someone here recommended. I couldn&#x27;t get my fat Swedish fingers in the access hole good enough to reach, so my modified version was sheet metal screws with loctite, a lock and flat washer - works awesome, and I had everything so it really didn&#x27;t cost me anything except my time. If this repair fail I will post!

Thanks for everything!

<title>[AWD] [850] [1996] Timing Belt and Waterpump -posted by- 1bignordic</title>
<description>Hi!

Well I got rid of an old friend the other day, my &#x27;89 745, and I miss her, but I replaced her with a &#x27;96 850 wagon (non-turbo) and I need to replace the timing belt. I have never done a timing belt on any vehicle. I have done quite a bit of repairs, but I have to say I&#x27;m a bit nervous about this one. I&#x27;m am writing for any tips/suggestions, including what brand of belt should I buy, what brand of water pump should I buy, and do I need any special tools.

I was going to go into Borton here in the Twin Cities but when I got a &#x22;ball Park&#x22; figure I thought it was time to learn! Two ther Items of discussion...

1. It seems as if a hinge or strap mount on the body part of the door jamb is broken and makes a loud clunk when opening and closing the door. Any suggestions?

2. The passengers side - outside mirror has cracked glass, I&#x27;ve done replacements on GM cars by breaking out the broken glass and replacing with new. Is Volvo similar?

Everyone here at brickboard has been so helpful! I really enjoy reading everything! Thanks so much!

<description>Hi everyone!

Ok, I&#x27;ve been reading so much about engine mounts, and maybe I&#x27;m missing something, but I need new hydraulic engine mounts for my 1989 745 GL - What brand is recommended to purchase??? Where do you recommend I purchase them from??? I do want to keep my Volvo a Volvo, but if there is an aftermarket mount that is the same as OEM and I can save some money, cool, if not I will go with the OEM.

I thank you all for any help you can pass my way!

<description>I&#x27;ve got an &#x27;89 745 and when I go to pop the hood, the right latch (passenger side) won&#x27;t release unless some one is lightly pulling up on the hood. Is this a common problem? I&#x27;ve tried adjust the receiver part but have had no luck, I&#x27;ve cleaned and oiled, and I see the &#x22;slide&#x22; moving when I have a helper pull on the release. Any tips?
