<title>[RWD] [200] fcpgroton - customer service strikes again -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>

I ordered some stuff from there a few weeks ago and got the standard order/receipt email a few minutes later.

Two days passed and my wife called me at work to tell me my package had arrived from fcpgroton. About 10 minutes later, I got an email from them telling me my package had shipped.

I received the items I ordered before I got the shipping notice. I&#x27;d say that was pretty fast.

I&#x27;m in Mississippi; they are in CT.

<description> I believe I paid about $26.00 with shipping. $10.00 bucks is way steep for shipping. They could have been sent in a padded envelope for around $2.00.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1987] Did I ruin a case of oil filters? -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>

If she goes down, for any reason, you&#x27;re going to blame those oil filters. I&#x27;m a little OCD about oil and filters. I don&#x27;t think I would ever use a filter that had been submerged in water. I know I wouldn&#x27;t use one on a volvo that had served faithfully for nearly 400,000. Filters are too cheap--even a case of them.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1987] Mounting the new square high mileage badges -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>
I got one of those new metal high mileage badges for 200,000

http://www.collection.volvocars.us/Products/Product1.aspx?ItemId=50001303&#x26;SectionId=50000272

It looks OK, but certainly not like the old ones. Still, better than the decal. It has an adhesive backing.

It came with a little sticker that said....I swear I am not making this up...

&#x22;Please visit your Volvo retailer for recommendations on safely affixing this badge to your vehicle, if you wish to do so.  Volvo recommends you avoid placing the badge on the front grill so as not to interfere with any safety sensors equipped on your vehicle.&#x22;

I really wasn&#x27;t planning on a consult with my &#x22;Volvo Retailer.&#x22;

Where are you guys mounting them, or where have you seen them mounted? I had already ruled out the grill, but not because of interfering with my &#x22;safety sensors,&#x22; don&#x27;t cha know.

Any ideas or pics out there. I apologize if this has been covered. I tried to find something in the archives.

<title>[RWD] [200] How many miles do you drive everyday? -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>87 245 with 207,000

I drive 72 miles round trip Monday-Friday. I&#x27;ve only &#x22;not&#x22; driven my 240 to work about three times in the last 1 and 1/2 years. (Waiting on parts!) I don&#x27;t drive all that much on the weekends, but occasionally take the 100+ mile trip or so in the 240 just for the sheer fun of it. (We have a 2001 XC70 as well and assorted other finely made vehicles.)

<title>[RWD] [200] [1986] eBay is the worst -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>Hard to say. I looked for vigorously for a 240 for 3 years. One never, ever, ever comes for sale in my neck of the woods in south Mississippi. I only know of 2 others in my town of 75,000 and neither would ever be for sale. I drove 100&#x27;s of miles to distant cities to look at rusted out and non running 240s.

On ebay you can find 15 in 20 minutes. Then, of course, you roll the dice.
Kind of fun in a weird sort of way, especially if you aren&#x27;t afraid to lose all your money :/ I agree it is not for the faint-hearted. I have read that ebay is moving out of the auction business and more to a &#x22;buy-it-now&#x22; format for marketers. Their auction revenue is shrinking every year, and they may be close to closing that part down for good. On the other hand, the economy may put a lot of good items out there. Sellers may need money worst than they need their flat screens and WI&#x27;s. I still shop there quite a bit for parts (never been shafted on apart there--yet).

<title>[RWD] [200] [1986] Just Purchased a 240DL -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>Been there, done that. I got screwed via ebay by Bruns Motors in Bel Air MD. They lied about every single issue on my 245. They lied about things that were totally unnecessary to lie about: fresh oil change! (The oil hadn&#x27;t been changed in about 5 years it didn&#x27;t look like.

Long story short, I set about fixing my car and after a year am very happy.

Hang in there, it may turn out ok for you if you are patient. It&#x27;s only money you lost, and these days money isn&#x27;t worth that much!

<title>[RWD] [200] 91 244 5 speed -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>I have an 87 with 5 speed and really like it. (207,000 miles). I&#x27;m getting around 30 miles to the gallon year round. The five speed is nice and fun to drive. I drained it about a year ago and filled it with Redline MLT. I&#x27;ve never had any problems so far. A sun roof is nice too. I don&#x27;t have one on my current car, but I had a 740 with one a few years back. Make sure it doesn&#x27;t leak, and check out the headliner. If you have to replace a headliner in a Volvo with a manual sun roof, make sure you are prayed up and lock the liquor cabinet.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1991] DAughter&#x27;s SE acting rough and oily -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>I am no expert, but I have known a stopped up breather box to cause that eerie whistle sound. If you think about how a child&#x27;s whistle is constructed, it is just a partially restricted tube that you blow air across. That breather box can get a chunk of sludge stuck in the plastic part and create a situation similar to a child&#x27;s whistle. That could also explain the smoke coming out, I suppose.

<title>[RWD] [200] Gobs of crankcase pressure? Major Oil Leaks! -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>For some bizarre reason, I enjoy working on the breather box, flame trap system. I don&#x27;t have a huge amount of technical skill, and because it is a pretty straight forward system, I feel like I sort of get the point.

Just take all the hoses off and clean or replace them. Take the breather box off and clean or replace it. (I always just replace...you can get one for $30 or so)
Follow the FAQ&#x27;s as Uncle Olaf explained or use Bentley and enjoy the process.

The first time I did it many years ago it turned a car that would barely crank and run into one that ran like a brand new automobile. That has happened to me more than once. Of course, that doesn&#x27;t happen every time, but it is a good place to start.

If you clean and free up the system, it may or may not stop your oil leaks. Either way, if you have been leaking a long time, expect to drip for a while longer until all the accumulated oil heats up and drips off. Again, if the damage has already been done, you&#x27;ll have to replace seals, etc. Sounds like you have done some of that already.

In my current car, after I replaced the breather box and cleaned all the flame trap system, I went from a leak that was about 1/2 to 3/4 qt of oil every two weeks---enough to really mess up a garage---to just a few drops every two weeks. I can live with that for a while. Let us know what solves your problem.

<title>[RWD] [200] Oil Leaks and Backfires -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>I have read that Volvo released a service bulletin instructing the removal of the flame trap. I can&#x27;t verify that. I still keep mine in there anyway and make sure it is squeaky clean at all times. If your flame trap is clean, you don&#x27;t have to worry about that one part causing an oil leak. Now, the breather box, hoses, etc. that&#x27;s another story. The entire system has to be clean and free flowing. I&#x27;m no expert, but I have seen what a stopped up system can do and how much difference a clean system can make.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1984] most frustrating day of Volvo fixin&#x27; ever.....? (Long, skip to the end for a real question) -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>

I feel your pain. Last night i rigged up a halogen light to do one of the endless jobs we all do. Dropped a nut into the recesses of the engine. Tried to get it for two hours. nope. Went in took a bath, went to bed. All night long i fished for that nut in my dreams. All night.

Got up at 4:30. ran 5 miles. drank a pot of coffee and went at it again. In the bright daylight, i had it out in less than 10 minutes with a bent coat hanger.

Now I only remember the thrill of catching that nut. All else if forgotten.

When you get done (eventually) you&#x27;ll stand back and say &#x22;Oh, it wasn&#x27;t that bad!&#x22; (I hope.)

That&#x27;s the neighborhood for a top of the line from Autozone, etc. You should get a core charge for 12 or so bucks.

You can get a little lower at Walmart or some of the deep discouners....

A Diehard Platnum p6 battery at sears is nearly $200.00

<title>[RWD] [200] Made offer on a car - possible coolant leak at head gasket?!?!? -posted by- Wiglaf</title>
<description>
I would talk to that mechanic. If it is a head gasket leak, it isn&#x27;t something you can ignore. And no one will really know what they are dealing with until you pull the head. It might be cracked. Then you have a bigger issue. On the other hand, if the mechanic confirms your fears and you confront the seller, maybe you could get the initial cost down under 1K. Also, depending upon the exhaust and cat problems, you could easily drop $500 or more on that repair. Let us know how it goes.
