[AWD] [850] Intermittent Speedometer -posted by- pjf

Klaus,
Thank you very much; I genuinely appreciate your help. I have a very dumb question: PNP switch, is it the tranny micro switch? If not, what is it? I am not all that familiar with Volvos but am learning now that my daughter has graduated from college and the economy is such that there is not currently a great demand for commercial building Interior Designers; the 850 will live in our drive for a while. I am pretty good with BMW's, Alfas, and VW's (air and diesel). That said, I've not heard of the PNP switch.

Another symptom this car has is that the cruise control does not work. It abruptly quit last winter. I've not yet checked the switch at the brake pedal but perhaps all of these maladies are related.

I did the Volvo timing belt this last spring and I was really impressed on how straight forward these Swedes do things. Now that I've done one, I bet I could do it again in about 2-3 hours; water pump included.

Thanks and I'll get my Volvo-partner-daughter to assist with the diagnosis.

[AWD] [850] Intermittent Speedometer -posted by- pjf

Thanks for the response Klaus. I got the codes read and it looks like I have to investigate vacuum leaks as the codes are P0170 and P0440. No speedo code though. Now I did notice while driving her car that if the car started and I did not have to jiggle the key to put it in drive, the speedo worked the entire time I was driving it. Prior to that, if the key needed to be jiggled, the speedometer did not work. Now it gets confusing as after it started working and I made my astute observation, I tried starting it and needed to jiggle the key to get the tranny to unlock and the speedometer worked and didn't fail in its previously observed time frame.

I am going to replace the ignition switch. It would be nice if that fixed the speedometer too but I'll not hold my breath. Now I got to get to those vacuum leaks.

Thanks again.

[AWD] [850] Axle Question -posted by- pjf

Can't help directly on the type of clip. When I was faced with a torn boot, I replaced the entire axel for about $70 with a rebuilt unit. In my area we have BAP/Geon and they are great to deal with. If I was removing the axel for one boot, may as well change both and that puts you in the realm of just replacing the axel with new boots and joints for about $30 more and it is less work, less mess, and greater peace of mind. This is especially true for me because the 850 is my daughter's car and she's at school 270 miles away.

I think each axel (replaced about a year apart) took about 1.5 hours each. You may need to take it to a shop and burb off the axel nut with air tools. I think it is a 35mm nut. I tipped the mechanic $10 to have this done; I could not budge it even with a big breaker bar.

Good luck.

[AWD] [850] Intermittent Speedometer -posted by- pjf

I've a speedometer problem on my daughter's 1996 850 Turbo wagon. The speedometer works upon start up and continues to work for 5-10 minutes then it abruptly stops working as if it looses the signal or power. When the speedometer quits, the odometer also quits. I bought a used instrument cluster and replaced it and have the same problem. If I shut off the car, then start it, the speedometer works and the sequence repeats itself as described.

The car currently has a problem with the ignition switch and I will be replacing it very soon. I must wiggle the key up and down in the slot to trip the tranny micro switch so it can be put in gear.

The wiggling does not bring the speedometer back to life once it quits thus I am lead to believe that the switch and the speedometer are not related. Also, all the other items in the cluster work, no ABS lights or other warnings. Check Engine Light is on; it often has been on this car.

I can sure use the help on this one, she's home for the summer thus the Volvo repair season starts for me.

Thanks and have a great holiday!

[AWD] [850] [1996] Tire Recommendations? -posted by- pjf

If you want a nice road tire, with a decent level of performance, and don't want to spend a fortune, try the Falken ZEIX 512's (sometimes ZE-512 or Z 512). I am on my second set of them; and got over 75K out of the first set. I do over 40,000 miles per year hear in south east Virginia. That said, they are on my BMW 325i, but my daughter drives a '96 850 turbo wagon and when her tires are gone, she'll be getting the Falkens. The few times we had snow down here, they did surprizingly well on the BMW which is nearly as bad as my old Alfa Milano was in snow and I grew up with lake effect snow so I do know how to drive in it. We (usually) get a lot of rain here and the Falkens are fantastic in the rain. The tires are also quiet and I have no problem taking sweeping turns at 85 MPH so there is reasonable performance from them. I got mine through hptires.net and their service was very good both times. I will do business with them again.

Good luck and for what it is worth, I am replacing struts and shocks in all four corners of the Volvo over the 7/4 "holiday." What daddy's do for daughters.

[AWD] [850] [1996] Engine stalls/quits below 1500 RPM -posted by- pjf

Thanks for the info and advise gentlemen. I'll be towing the car home this weekend and will give it a good going over. Hopefully, it is the MAF and the cleaning/fixes you described will do the trick. I need to make this car very reliable as my daughter is a good 4 hours away in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech.

Again, thanks a bunch. If you know anybody that is interested in an Alfa Romeo 164S and wants a project, send them my way. Work Phone: 804.916.1300 I just do not have the desire anymore; I'd rather build a canoe. I'll sell it cheap. I also have a 164 L. It is a project and cheap too.

[AWD] [850] [1996] Engine stalls/quits below 1500 RPM -posted by- pjf

Folks I'm new to this forum as my daugher owns the Volvo. I need your help and I appreciate it. She has a '96 850 Turbo w/ about 112K on it and it is an automatic. I've replaced plugs last summer and done general maintenance including the tranny flush when she is home from college. Last week she drove to work and the car was fine. At the end of her shift she started it and it would not hold the idle, it stalls below 1500 RPM. She states the car did not run rough prior to this. I had her hold the idle for a while at about 2000 RPM and the temp gauge indicates it is working so it is probably not a temp sensor. O2 sensors give you ample warning (usually) in setting the check engine light and poor gas mileage. This is not the case and the check engine light did not remain on after initial start up.

Any ideas where to start or what it may be? I am used to doing repairs as I've owned Alfas in the past need I say more but I miss them) and do all my own work on my BMW, air cooled VW, and Jeep. This seems like a fuel delivery or sensor problem to me.

Thanks,
