[AWD] [XC90] V8 Reliability -posted by- Skierman

Thanks for the response.

There are know issues with the T6 (I believe pre-2008) and its transmission (made by GM). Check out http://www.v70xc.com/forums/ under the xc90 forum.

I have not only seen xc90 T5s with significant oil sludge, but also seen oil sludge in some xc70s that I have checked out with less than 80k km. I believe that the Volvo recommended oil change schedule for the xc90 is too infrequent as the XC90 is a heavy vehicle requiring extra work by the engine which generates a lot of heat with the turbo leading to faster oil breakdown. It probably doesn't help that I reside in mountainous British Columbia.

The V8 XC90s appear to be reliable, though they have don't have the best gas mileage and there is rear bearing issue. A replacement rear and middle muffler (not including the cat) was estimated to cost of CDN$2,100.00 including taxes and approx. one hour of labour - unbelievable cost.

[AWD] [XC90] V8 Reliability -posted by- Skierman

I am looking at buying a 2006 XC90 with the V8 engine after seeing so many five cylinder models with significant oil sludge on the dip stick and oil filler cap. Any comments on the reliability of the V8 engine Yamaha engine and the model in general. I am also not looking at ones with the V6 engine given their problems with the transmission.

Thanks in advance.

[AWD] [XC] [2008] XC70 2008 Rear Rotor Issue -posted by- Skierman

Interesting that you should mention the rotor issues as I have been looking into buying a xc90. It had its rear rotors replaced at about 50k km as they were worn out. The front rotors had been replaced at something like 45k km and was on its third set of pads. I have a 945T with 240k km and have yet to replace the rear rotors. I have replaced the front rotors once.

[RWD] [700] Heater control valve quality -posted by- Skierman

I recently purchased a Volvo heater control valve from a Volvo dealership in British Columbia for my 945T. It was identical in every way to the Scantech one I had lying around that I purchased a couple of years ago, but had not installed, except for the price - an astounding CDN$124.44. The dealership indicated that Volvo no longer made the metal/plastic one and had moved to the all plastic model.

On another note, went to purchase a coolant filler cap and they wanted over CDN$40.00 at the dealership. I subsequent saw the identical cap, made in Germany, available through a autoparts website for around CDN$14.00.

[RWD] [900] [1993] Exhaust vibration -posted by- Skierman

Yes, there is such a bracket. I installed one on my '93 945T+ in 2006 and the part cost CDN$8.95. It helped with the vibrations.

Hope that helps.

[RWD] [900] [1993] Seat Heater Relay -posted by- Skierman

Thanks for all the help.

My seat heaters in my 1993 945T+ are now working great using the replacement relay from a 1990 760 and following the suggestion provided by Mapleleafer. I did join pins 15 and 30 by soldering a copper wire between the pins inside of the relay. The heater does not stay on after turning off the ignition even if the switch is on.

[RWD] [900] 1991 940 SE Wagon -posted by- Skierman

Look and check for the following in addition to the standard or usual checks:

- radiator - needs replacing at about 8 to 10 years (about CDN$475 for the part)
- heater core (look and smell for coolant in the footwells - they usually need replacing and in the 940 SE it is more complicated as it has the automotic climate control (about $600.00 to $1,000.00 for parts and labour for the manual climate control)
- a/c - check for leaks as the parts are very expensive (about CDN$800 just for the evaporator)
- loose panel on the tailgate - relatively inexpensive and easy to repair
- shudder from the rear end when under load - drive shaft may need shimming
- whether any problems shifting from park as it may mean the microswitch needs replacing
- the two fuel pumps need replacing after about 150 km - another fairly expensive job
- front and rear engine seal leaks - while not expensive to repair they seem to leak from time to time
- water pump - seems to need replacing every 100 to 150 km
- oil leaks around the turbo and the overall functioning of the turbo
- leaks in the power steering rack (a new or replacement rack is about CDN$800)

Hope that helps.

[RWD] [900] [1993] Seat Heater Relay -posted by- Skierman

Thanks for the detailed responses.

I have closely examined the circuit boards for both the 1990 and 1993 leather seat heater relays. Except for one connection, the circuit board and electronic parts appear to be idential on both relays (the numbers on the NEC chip are also slightly different). The one difference on the circuit board is that on the 1993 model the circuitry has a direct connection between the area where pin 15 (pin 30 on the 1990 model) joins the circuit board and the area where pin 30 (pin 15 on the 1990 model) used to connect to the board (when comparing to the 1990 model). Therefore, it would appear that making a wire connection between pin 15 and 30 on the 1990 relay does exactly what is done on the updated 1993 circuit board.

In addition, in the 1993 Volvo there is no wire connected to where pin 15 used to be and pin 30 has been renamed pin 15. The 1993 model has three wires connected to the relay while the 1990 model has four wires.

Does this affect your response?

[RWD] [900] [1993] Seat Heater Relay -posted by- Skierman

Mapleleafer (I assume a Canadian!) Thanks for the information.

My seats are leather and the black relay I recently purchased is also marked leather. The black relay (same manufacturer as the green relay) has four pins: 15, 30, 31 and 87. I will somehow attempt to connect pin 15 and 30, either from inside or on the outside and see if it works.

What do the 15 and 30 pins do?

Thanks again.

[RWD] [900] [1993] Seat Heater Relay -posted by- Skierman

Hi All,

Is it possible to use the black leather seat heater from a 1990 Volvo 760 as a replacement for the green leather seat heater in a '93 940? If not, what is the difference between the two relays and how they operate?

Thanks.
