[RWD] [900] 960 control arms -posted by- ChrisS

Swedish inflation...? I was surprised, too, but my mechanic quoted me $280/each so the FCP price is not unreasonable if that was the dealer price through mechanic. But, it's still more than I want to spend. I may just try taking them off myself and getting a shop to install the bushings (if that is possible)

[RWD] [900] brakes shudder when turning after new rotors installed -posted by- ChrisS

Thanks for the response, Spook.

I believe that something was "disturbed" enough to cause this post-fix. I agree with you about the brakes operating correctly and how that may not be the problem of shuddering when turning. The steering and pump have always been fine on this car.

Is it possible that turning the wheels manually with the engine OFF, could have caused something to go awry with the pump and/or other steering parts? (seems odd to me)...

spook, further detail of which you requested: the wheel shudders when turned but not in full lock.

do you think this condition could be caused by the calipers being torqued to the incorrect ft/lbs?

[RWD] [900] [1993] brakes shudder when turning after new rotors installed -posted by- ChrisS

spook, thanks for writing. I did *not* find any shudder when turning the wheel. I put the car on jack stands to try and diagnose the problem and the wheel turned nicely with the front wheels elevated. In fact, it turned nicely with one tire on and only one wheel elevated with no shudder whatsoever.

It only seems to occur while moving. This did not occur prior to changing the rotors and the steering has always been very very smooth (better than my 1997 960).

The culprit I believe could be the calipers and re-torquing the bolts. It's only a guess, but I think I may have not torqued them correctly, as it was impossible to get my long torque wrench positioned under the car.

Thanks for the analysis - keep it coming!

[RWD] [900] brakes shudder when turning after new rotors installed -posted by- ChrisS

I get a very strong shudder through the steering column when I turn the wheel (no brakes applied). When I apply the brakes in a straight line, it stops nicely and gives no shudder. The only quirk is that the pedal is not as hard as it was prior to replacement, but that is not the reason for this post.

I replaced the rotors with the cheaper China-made version as I don't think I'll be keeping the car beyond the winter time. But, again, I don't think the rotors are to blame, as they seem to work as intended.

The only other thing I replaced was the stabilizer link on one side, as it was gone.

[RWD] [700] seat interchange question -posted by- ChrisS

Lucas, that is interesting, thanks.

I find the 780 seats to be the best this side of a barcalounger. I'm sorry they did not fit for you. I agree on the 740 seats being on the cheap side (at least the base models) compared to the rest of the line.

I had another post about the seat bottoms becoming smaller through the years and I still believe this to be the case and one day I will take a tape measure to my seat bottoms to confirm this! Note, I said seat bottom.

It is interesting to note that the 780 seat bottom fit and that you could use that.

[RWD] [900] [1993] recommend front brake rotors for a 960 -posted by- ChrisS

My rotors are toast after the car sat for some time (odd since they were in good shape prior to sitting).

Anyway, this car is on its way out as the rear main seal and front cam seal is leaking and I don't think it's worth fixing. So... the rotors are needed but I don't want to use OEM here and I'm looking for decent. I guess this means using Chinese made rotors - so which have you had decent luck with?

[RWD] [S90-V90] [1997] Thoughts on the 97 S90 -posted by- ChrisS

I will second what others have said and add to check the rear main seal (and cam seals in the front) for leaks. I think Volvo improved these on the later 960s, but there are still problems. My 1993 leaks like crazy and my 1997 does not (crosses fingers very earnestly!) leak.

I see those cars all day for the price you stated, although with somewhat higher mileage. I think that people generally don't touch them as used because they are afraid of the maintenance costs.

They're no longer considered "luxury" cars as even Hyundai has nicer amenities, but they are a nice ride.

[RWD] [S90-V90] what year did Volvo redesign engines on the 960? -posted by- ChrisS

I have both a 1993 and a 1997 and the difference in the driving manners is notable. granted, the chassis is different, but the engine in the 1993 is one of the best lumps I have had the pleasure of sitting behind. the 1997 is quite nice, but not like the 93 in terms of "oomph"; the 93 may have it beat a little on overall driveability, too. the 97 does get better gas mileage.

so, was it 95 or 94 when Volvo redesigned the engines with different cams and different fuel injectors, etc?

[RWD] [900] [1997] smelling gasoline around the filler cap/door -posted by- ChrisS

Thanks, David, Robert and dew. I came off as somewhat paranoid in my post but mainly because I recently read about some fires in V70s.

I will do what dew suggests and see if it helps.

The smell is certainly stronger than it should be for simply walking by the car but there are no visible leaks.

The other thread on the fuel rail got me thinking (and plenty nervous...) about what I am smelling around the filler orifice. Is there something that should be checked? I see no fuel pooling on the ground, but vapors are not very good, either.

[RWD] [S90-V90] 17 inch rims on a V90? more height for winter driving? -posted by- ChrisS

Tom, excellent little bio of your love affair with Volvos. Perhaps we should all do the same and have them archived somewhere ;->

My signature line gives my Volvo history which only spans the last 12 or so years but is now out of date with the addition of the 1997. In a few intervening years, I owned a Honda and a Toyota.

I really became addicted to the ride of the 965s while I was looking for a nice 745T. I ended up buying a nice example of a normally aspirated 745 (1991) but I was addicted to the ride of a couple of the 965s I test drove while going through this little exercise to find my next brick. I kept coming back to the smooth acceleration and the taught ride. So, I bought the 745 and then quickly thereafter found a 1993 965 beater-mobile with 230k miles. It's the one I have now and am contemplating giving up because of the multiple oil leaks.

The wife wanted something more cushy so I bought the 1997 with 121k miles for about $4000. I think I was the other person who came in second to the 1998 you bought (if you bought it from someone in NY).

Anyway, things do go wrong with these cars and that is why I'm always posting to this board (which is great!). I am certain you will be able to help us (relatively) new 960 owners out with your experience gained with your three cars and the combined brick years you have under your belt.

[RWD] [S90-V90] 17 inch rims on a V90? more height for winter driving? -posted by- ChrisS

Tom, you are correct, of course, about width of tires and winter driving. The rationale for my question was trying to juggle which rims and tires would get new summer tires and which would get new winter tires. In the meanwhile, I sold off the 17 inch rims as they rubbed against the strut towers and I could not be bothered buying spacers (they were quite nice rims, though, and some day I would like to install them on my 965).

I will take seriously your recommendation as Syracuse gets more snow than Boston! I do have a local tire dealer I like and I will call around for prices. By the time the tires are mounted and balanced, it is sometimes not worth it to buy tires separately online. But, again, I will check prices.

It sounds like you have some experience with these cars. I own a 93 and a 97 and love them, although the 93 has developed leaks in multiple places and I may have to abandon it (see future thread on that). What was the reason you have owned three cars of the same model now? Did the previous two quit or did you just wear them out?

Best, Chris

[RWD] [700] when did Volvo seat bottoms get smaller? -posted by- ChrisS

Actually, my 1997 would appear to have been garaged for nearly all of its life as the undercarriage is in superb condition as is the exterior paint.

My 1993 965 has better plastic (for some reason) but the seat control section comes loose at the fixing screw. Every Volvo of that vintage I have sat in seems to have that problem.

[RWD] [700] when did Volvo seat bottoms get smaller? -posted by- ChrisS

the power seat controls are made of plastic, a very cheap plastic that tends to crack and degrade.

I'm not sure why Volvo has made such poor plastic and finishes (the flapping roofs of 74x and 76x models of the 1980s) throughout the years.
