[RWD] [444-544] 122 transmission with O.D. into a 544 -posted by- triumph61

Thanks for all the info. It appears that I will be staying with the 4 speed/none O.D.. I really just don't have the desire to cut and weld the tunnel to install another trans. I do have a Miata trans in my garage and might see if it is possible to install that 5 speed into it, without cutting the welding. Anyways, thanks again.

[RWD] [444-544] 122 transmission with O.D. into a 544 -posted by- triumph61

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I can't find it. I have a PV544 with a B16 engine and a M40 4 speed trans. I would love a 5th gear or overdrive for expressway driving. Will a 122s trans with O.D. fit into this car?. If not, what kind of conversion can be done to get a trans with a 5th gear or with O.D. into a 544. Thanks

[RWD] [444-544] Volvo pissing me off! -posted by- triumph61

Been there, done that!!!. Close the door to the garage and take a break. Go fishing, read a book, just get away from the car for a while and things will look better later. I presently own 7 hobby cars, from Volvos, Triumphs to Benzs and an Excalibur and they all seem to demand my attention, so when I get to the point of throwing my wrenches against the walls and taking a crow bar to the windshield, I step back and close the garage door for several days up to weeks.
It all looks better when I get back to it later. Good Luck.

[RWD] [444-544] Distributor and starter numbers, where can I find these -posted by- triumph61

I tried to edit the original post, but for some reason it wouldn't let me. Update, I read the starter number wrong, instead of a 811, it was 311 and I've found out it comes from a Saab 12V. I'm not sure what the previous owner did, but it is in my car and working great. So, I found a starter rebuild shop in the area and they have several old ones on their shelves.
The Dist. is the original from a B16b 6V engine, I'm not sure what was done with the coil, it must be a 12V coil that the PO put in. Anyways, I am still looking for a good used Dist. model number VJU 4BR20 as a spare at a fair price. It doesn't have to be rebuilt, but it does have to work properly.
                               Thanks

[RWD] [444-544] Distributor and starter numbers, where can I find these -posted by- triumph61

I've been trying to locate a spare distributor and starter for my 544 that was converted to 12v. The car is presently running great, but I plan on taking a long trip next summer and would like to carry some spare direct bolt in parts.
The Dist. # is VJU 4BR20 and the Starter is a Bosch 0 001 811 108 12V.
Does anyone know where I can purchase these items, new or used are fine as long as they work. I just purchased a 6v starter for emergency use, but the 12V would be even better to have available. Also, is the Distributor possibly from a B18 or B20 engine?
I did some google searches for the starter and could not find where to buy one, but I did find that there is a high torque starter for a Saab that replaces this starter. I would prefer to buy just a good used replacement starter.
Also for those of you who are converting from 6V to 12V, this starter is working great in my converted car, but I really don't know what the previous did with the conversion to make it work or is it a direct bolt in. Anyways, any help will be greatly appreciated.

[RWD] [444-544] B16 distributor upgrade -posted by- triumph61

I have a 544 with a b16 engine that has been converted to a 12v system. I am assuming that the distributor is still the original. I want to upgrade the distributor to an electronic system, preferably a Pretronix unit. If a Pertronix will not work, any type of pointless system. Does anyone know of any units that will work with the B16 distributor. I went to the Pertronix site and it doesn't have anything listed for the B16 engine. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Also, as mentioned earlier, this car was converted to a 12v system. Would the starter have been changed to a different starter (12v), I'd like to find a extra starter to have as a spare, but I'm not sure what model I should look for, one for the original B16 engine or a B18 starter.
                                  Thanks

[RWD] [444-544] ONE FYI AND ONE QUESTION -posted by- triumph61

Thanks for the replies, I will have to give this some thought cause I now have the possiblity of purchasing a B18 engine at a resonable price,(it will also need rebuilding), but it appears to be easier to find parts for that engine. How difficult is it to swap from a B16 to a B18 engine. Considering I'm not concerned with originality, would swapping engines be a smarter move over trying to find parts and rebuilding the B16 engine. Just looking for opinions.
                     Thanks

[RWD] [444-544] ONE FYI AND ONE QUESTION -posted by- triumph61

First the FYI. While reinstalling the front bumper, that I removed about 3 months ago. I found that the front brackets are specific to each side and I hadn't marked them, as they both looked the same. When I went to install them, they both fit and the bumper bolted up, but the bumper was mounted up high and would block the turn signal lights. It took me about 1/2 hour to figure out what the problem was. When removing the front bumper and brackets, MARK THEM drivers or passenges side.
Now for the question, I have a 544 with a b16 engine and the engine seems to run strong, but burns a fairly large amount of oil, so I'm considering over the winter of rebuilding the B16. I've done goggle searches and cannot find anyone that sells B16 engine rebuild kits. Does anyone have a source for a kit. Also is there a site that gives a step by step of how to rebuild the engine and what problems to look for.

[RWD] [444-544] 544 REAR SEAT BED -posted by- triumph61

I read in one of my Volvo books that when the 444/544 were being manufactored that there was some kind of rear seat conversion to a sleeping area option that could be ordered from the factory. Has anyone ever heard of this or seen one of these options in a car. I was just wondering what it would look like.
                                     Thanks

[RWD] [444-544] WHAT SHOULD THE RPMS BE AT 75 MPH -posted by- triumph61

I just got my 4 month PV544 project on the road and what fun it is. I took it on the expressway to let the engine open up a little, as it hasn't been driven at speed in over 10 years. Anyways, I installed a tach and the tach indicates that at 75 mph, the engine is working at 45000 rpms, is this about correct. At 75 mph the engine sounds as if it could run at this speed for hours, but not much more, is 75 mph about top end for distance driving. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[RWD] [444-544] Seat Belts for 444 -posted by- triumph61

Keith, this is an unrelated response, but your the first person I've found that has a 444 or 544 that is even close to Chicago. I resently purchased a 544 and own a 1800 (both under restoration) and was wondering if there are any local clubs in the midwest area for older Volvos. I joined the National clubs, but I would like to find something in the local area (I know Moline isn't local, but it's at least close to Chicago) so I can get some local input into restoration/parts/shows/etc. Also, if you need the measurements for the belt mounting, I can measure mine and let you know. I know my car came with the belts mounted and I suppose there original.
                   Thanks

[RWD] [444-544] Pertronix, Electronic ignition, which can be used in a B16 engine -posted by- triumph61

I forgot to mention that my 544 B16 has already been converted to a 12 volt system. The previous owner did the conversion and it appears that everything works correctly and I just installed a Delco alt. in place of the generator, so I figure the distributor would be able to use a 12v pertronix (if they make one for it)

[RWD] [1800] I Just Bought a 1965 P1800 -posted by- triumph61

I'm at work at this time and can't visualize the clutch MC, but I know that with every old car I work on, if the piston is stuck in, I use compressed air from my compressor and blow it out. You have to be very careful and use towels with a vise and DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OF THE PISTON AREA.Cover the end of the MC with the towels, so the piston can't fly out, The piston can act as a projectial and cause injury. This method has always worked for me. If you do decide to use compressed air, BE VERY CAREFUL.

[RWD] [444-544] Unusual ignition problem -posted by- triumph61

I just resently purchased a PV544, trailered it home and started rehabing it. It kind of ran when I bought it, but not really very well and definately not drivable any distance. Aside from all the general replacing of fluids and rubber parts, I had to get the engine in driveable condition.
I gave it a complete tune-up removed and cleaned the carbs. I went to start it up and it fired right up, but ran rather rough and sputtered and backfired upon giving it gas. After rechecking all the wires,I readjusted the carbs, which made no difference. After several hours of once again removing, cleaning and resetting the carbs, checking timing, wires, etc. I stopped and decided to start from the beginning.
Long story short, I found that the rotor I had purchased was about 2 mil. meters shorter then the cap height, instead of the metal tab on the rotor hitting the metal wire pickups, it was riding just under the metal tab on 2 wires. At first I thought maybe I had the new cap on wrong, but after several different attempts at removing and replacing the cap, there was no difference in the way it ran.
I finally installed the old rotor (which appeared to be just mil.met. larger) with the new cap and it fired up and rans great. I have never seen this problem before and it really had me stumped for several hours, but luck was with me and the car seems to be running great now.
Thanks for reading.

Will using the 78 amp alt. present any danger to my wiring system. As mentioned earlier, the wiring has been replaced when the 6V was converted to 12V and I will be using some more modern electrical, front lights, CD player, but no amps or anything crazy.
[RWD] [444-544] BACK TO 544 ALT. CONVERSION QUESTION -posted by- triumph61

I was given a Delco 78 amp. alt. from a friend to use in my conversion from a generator to an alt. on my 544. I also picked up a newer fuse box, old looking but uses blade fuses. My question is, is a 78 amp alt. going to cause problems with overheating the wiring in my car. Most of the wiring was upgraded when the car was converted from 6V to 12V, but there still is some of the old wiring in the car. Any input on this question will be greatly appreciated.

[RWD] [444-544] REBUILDING 544 STEERING BOX -posted by- triumph61

I took this sites advise and closed up the steering box and added fluid and the fluid just about pours out the bottom by the large nut. So I bought a rebuild kit and plan on replacing the needed seals. Is there anything I should be concerned with when taking this box apart, can the steering box be rebuilt while still in the car or do I have to remove it and should I mark the location of the steering arm before I remove it. Naturally the kit did not come with any directions. I do have a repair manual, but I'd rather get information from people that have rebuild them before. Any suggestions or potential problems I should be concerned with.
