[RWD] [200] difference in 2.2, 2.3 & 2.4 system -posted by- Photoman327

Thanks, I was thinking I could use 850 Turbo Injectors, 3 Bar or 4 bar fuel regulator and a 740 Turbo ECU on my current engine that is in great shape. at first never considered a turbo to the 87 B230F. I figured out how much stronger the B230FT engine is so I started searching for a low mileage engine and found one. I'm Committed to picking it up & I still trying to learn how to make it all work. There is nothing wrong with the engine in my car I could go cross country anytime. Just want a little more power. Greg

[RWD] [200] [1989] Am I getting soft, or older and wiser? Turned down a 240 yesterday -posted by- Photoman327

You are getting wiser with age. I would have jumped on it for the Transmission and look at it as the cost of the transmission since I have never had a 5 sp Volvo. I know the 245 have the following but I prefer a 244. Greg

Thanks, That helps me understand thing a little better. The only reason I was looking into that is I'm thinking for changing to a B230FT motor and with the engine out that would be the time to change over to LH 2.4. Greg

Would someone tell me the differences between these systems on a 240 or 740 and the years they were installed. My 87 240 has the 2.2 some say is inferior to the 2.4. I have not has any issues but given the age a upgrade would be warranted with the Motor upgrade. thanks

How many miles and what is wrong with the motor in you car? I almost purchased a couple of low mileage motors last year because of their low mileage. Glad I did not because now I want a turbo motor. Greg

[RWD] [200] B230FT Thoughts -posted by- Photoman327

Thanks Mike. I was studying John's Pictures this morning while riding my bike. I'm going for the factory look under the hood and the 8V head. Much cheaper and much less head ache getting it running. I'm going to have a learning curve figuring out turbos period. I remember reading info that 300 below sent me about a turbo on a tractor pull motor that had to have the Turbo completely rebuilt ever 7th pull. The treated the entire turbo and it was 297 pulls before hearing a bearing noise. I did not pay much attention then but I plan to find out if I have to build one. Their process works for sure in releiving stress. Not sure if I mention it but I had a rifle the I had it bedded and sanded on the trigger my self and it would group about 1/4 inch. I sent 4 barrels to them go them back and put the one that had been tuned a little. I shot a 10 shot group of .11. That is smaller than the bullet that I was shooting. I keep the target for the longest still may have it. I have want to try the process on engine for years. Finally get close but it going to be a Chevy Small block. If I have to tear into a Volvo engine I would go that route as well. I have talked to VP at 300 below on several times and 3x on the service life on brake rotors is a easy. I have never seen any post hear about freezing parts. Nasscar had done this for year but no one is talking much about it. I'm really screwing up hopping up my 240 because there is nothing wrong with it.
Anyway John Factory look (when he got it) has me wanting that look. Just don't have them money to go 16V. I think that was a 850 turbo air box. Don't know how restrictive but I does look good to me. I see a lot of pictures with K&N filters. What di the 13C come off of and how much PSI & do you want to part with it? I picked up a older 740 turbo and manifold check the turbo for movement. it have none to speak of but have not had the time to get back at it. Greg

John, This is a super and Greatly help me. I think you know The Volvo B230 like I know SBC. I have printed your post on this and see that it a serious amount of money and work to get anywhere close to where you are on your 245. I've decided to drive to Dallas to get the low mileage B23FT November 10th. Since the owner says I could run this one without doing anything, I going to pick it up. I was going to pull the pan and check main and rod bearing and take a look under the valve cover. Anything else I need to check before parting with the cash? You post have helped me and given me a lot to think about. I'm sure that 12 to 15 PSI of boost will make me real happy. The thought of a ticking time bomb would have me scared to get after it and Also thinking I could have had a V8. I love SBC's but when you pop the hood of my Volvo's I would rather see a Volvo engine. If I come up with a 16V head Cheap, I'm buying it Just in cast Art is Correct.
John, Thank you for posting more pictures. I'm sitting here laughing, thinking " nobody see you coming the first time. That Classic is clean and it does look factory right down to the air box. Love the color too. My 245 Is blue green and I hate the color. I have a one muffler turbo mufflerset up on the 91 245 that I'm thinking of swapping to the 244 and putting the new stock set up on the 245 since that the 244 is the one I want to add the turbo. I know I could have a V8 and have thought about that quite a bit. several people informed me that I could a stock 740/940 turbo to my B230F on the cheap(300-400) and 8 to 10 hrs work That's what got me. I'm getting in deeper every day. Right now I would be very happy with 170 Hp and the stock look you had. any of those stock part you want to part with(air box, down pipe, etc.) Did the 93 come with the hood pad? I understand what you mean about the 16v vs the 8v flow. about 12 year ago I ported a set of 041 chevy heads 160/202 manly undercut stems. It took me about 29 hours in sessions of 4 to 6 hours. I tore up a sear die grinder on that project. Now I have a big and small Milwaukee. i was so proud of my hard and wanted to verify my work so, i had them flowed at a Lavender racing engines. They flowed well still have the number stuck on the ice box. look the and some other head in the floor and spotted some Vortec. Got him to flow them to give me a better base line. The Stock Vortec head with 1.50/194 valves beat the crap out of the 041 at low lift where most of the time would be spent. Above 6000 rpm I have a much better flowing head. So that 16V head still has me thinking back to that. All the chevy heads I have are AFR or port GM fast burn. I have not built a engine in tha last 10 year that has stock head. everything to ported or cleaned up. with the die grinder. If I come up with a 16v head cheap I'm sure I would tear into them as well. What type of headers does your car have? I called Extrude Hone last week and they wanted $495.00 to port one manifold. A little more than I can give. Let me know about part. Greg

Thanks Mike for your outline. You are dead on. My money is light and the reason I have no crank for my 415 Small block. The wow factor gets me excited. I want the rock solid reliability that I have enjoyed thus far. The whole idea of purchasing the 87 244 GL in 86 was safety and starting our family. I had no idea that it was as tough as it is. Found that out much much later. I drive whatever whenever however if some uninsured bum ran over me in a 240 I might survive it and I would be hurt thinking about all the work and money that i have spent but If I was in my 1968 SS Impala Rag top with 53,000 miles. If I survived he surly would not. I'm just getting started on my turbo quest and trying to get pointed in the right direction. Greg

It cost to play. John you gave me a reality check. I would be happy with a 15 pSI boost range but I do know how addictive power is. I have a set of JE 1,200.00 pistons and some 6" Crower titainium (unlimited rpm unlimited HP) rods bolts torque on 90 Ft lbs) $3500.00 rods, billet caps 4 bolt on all five main. all for a 400 SBC. no crank yet. This is all for my Vette killer project. Block is going to 300 below before I have it bored in December. When i think about the money I have spent on parts and tools, I think I'm a little sick in the head and see I'm not the only one. If I had that kind of power in my 240 I sure I could sucker punch quite a few good old boys in my neck of the woods. I should have that b230FT in hand November 11th. I hoping for a good engine that i will not have to build. Here in Northwest Alabama there are no good sources for volvo anything. The 16V head is so trick and it not as bad as I though with the links you provided. Its also very clear that you are much better with Volvo than I am. Never Had to do anything. Once I figure out exactly what to do I'm going for it. You have me studying your picture and craving for more hint hint. Post more of everything. your entire car too so that If I do run up on you I don't sucker punched. greg

I looked too. its a 85 with around 206,000 miles. looks good to me but no pictures of the engine bay. Could not tell if it been lowered and the price of 2000.00 for a non runner. it could be most anything but should be easy to fix. If I were buying a compression and a leak down test might pay what they ask or lower my offer. Greg

Ran even worse Sunday so today I was going to change the cap & rotor button to see if that was the problem. The cap had black residue on the inside and I could not get the rotor button off. Change the Cap with a good used one fixed my problem but I need to get the rotor button off and replace both with new ones. any tricks on getting the button off? Greg
