[RWD] [700] [1991] Replacing Heater Core on 91 740 Turbo -posted by- labelboy

Thanks for the latest info. I like that price much better. I'll be sure to post back when the job is done…or when I run into trouble. Looks like a nightmare job, but nothing a little patience won't conquer. Sounds to me like it might be worth the extra half hour or so to remove the front seats. Whadaya think?

[RWD] [700] [1991] Replacing Heater Core on 91 740 Turbo -posted by- labelboy

BTW:

I am having a hard time understanding which procedure to use. I'm referring to what is in Haynes. With non ACC do I not need to pull the center console, ashtray, radio, etc? They outline one procedure where you only need to pull the driver side stuff to do the job. Or is that referring to non-air conditioned cars?

Thanks in advance for the clarification.

Thanks for the tips. Hope you stay tuned, cause I may have questions along the way. I'm not planning this project til early Sept.

Do you know of a good inexpensive source to buy the heater core? Is there big differences in quality. I just want one that'll last a couple of years. It's my sons college car and doubt we'll keep it forever. My local Parts guy quoted me $350 retail $250 cuz I'm a good customer.

BTW: Did you by any chance know the answer to my question about whether my controls are Automatic Climate Control or just plain heating and cooling controls?

[RWD] [700] [1991] Replacing Heater Core on 91 740 Turbo -posted by- labelboy

Hope someone can give me some info before I get started on replacing the heater core in my sons 91 740 Turbo wagon.

First of all, I need to verify what kind of system I have. The car has A/C. I don't know if it is considered to have ACC(Auto Climate Control). Does that mean it uses a particular heating program to control temp, etc? The controls on this car appear to be pretty simple. Blower knob, defrost/hi/low/mix knob, AC button, Recycle button. The answer to this question seems to have a direct bearing on the complexity of the job of replacing it. Am I correct.

The manuals I've looked at aren't very clear on which models they are talking about. They seem to differ not be clear about which model they are talking about. For instance, in Chiltons, they make it sound like a slam dunk while others have you pulling steering wheels and god what knows what else.

I'd really like to know a bit about what's what before I start tearing the whole dash apart.

Any advice or tips would really be appreciated.

[RWD] [700] [1991] Can't get front rotors off -posted by- labelboy

Really dumb question. Are the rotors by any chance connected to the hub, i.e. You have to pull the front grease cap and pull the bearing and hub along with it?

[RWD] [700] [1991] Can't get front rotors off -posted by- labelboy

Well. I'll give it another go tomorrow when the parts come in. I didn't want to beat on it too hard before I knew if I could get new rotors. That 6mm threaded hole had no bolt in it. Just the threaded hole. Is it supposed to have a bolt? This is the front of the car I'm doing.

Thanks

[RWD] [700] [1990] Diagnostic codes question -posted by- labelboy

Sorry I didn't post back sooner. I believe I understand how to use OBD now. Thanks all.

I cleared the codes and the error hasn't returned and the car seems to be running better. However, now the heater core went south on me. (My son's car) along with a 1-2-3 code on pin 2. I cleared and it didn't come back but got 2-2-4 on pin 6 so must still have a problem. I bypassed the heater core temporarily. I think I'll leave the R&R til I have a whole weekend free.

[RWD] [700] [1991] Can't get front rotors off -posted by- labelboy

91 740 Turbo wagon Girling ABS brakes. I cannot get the rotors off. The Girling brakes are the easiest pad replacement I've seen. Much more straight forward than my other cars. But the rotors are frozen on solid. Is there a trick to getting them off other than banging the @##32$% out of them with a hammer.(Luckily I'm replacing them so no worry). But still I'd like to know the proper way. I notice that they have holes in between the studs. they all look like they stop at the hub, except one has 6mm threads. Does that have something to do with getting them off? If not any tips appreciated.

BTW: This is a fantastic resource for all us that want to work on their own vehicles.

Thanks

[RWD] [700] [1990] Diagnostic codes question -posted by- labelboy

When first started it acts like it's going to die (sometimes it does die) for the first couple of minutes of driving. Then it seems to be fine once it's been on the road for awhile.

BTW: I've searched for the RWD FAQ's and cannot find the article on Diagnostic codes.

[RWD] [700] [1990] Diagnostic codes question -posted by- labelboy

When first started it acts like it's going to die (sometimes it does die) for the first couple of minutes of driving. Then it seems to be fine.

About the codes. When I push for mode 2 I get constant led blinking. Mode 3 I get the same thing along with clicking from the intake manifold.

Just wondering if this is what I should be getting if there are no error codes stored in those modes.

I cleared tthe codes and now I get a 1-1-1 in mode 1. So I guess the MAF is o.k.

[RWD] [700] [1990] Diagnostic codes question -posted by- labelboy

90 740 turbo with bosch injection.

Position 1 I get 1-2-1 MAF. This make sense because the car is trying to stall when it's cold.
My question is for the other error codes. When I push the button 2 and 3 times respectively. I get quick blinks that dont stop until I unplug the probe. Is this normal? Three pushes also produces a clicking sound from my injectors.

Should I disconnect the battery to reset the system?
Any replies appreciated.

[RWD] [700] 1990 740Turbo stalling out at 3500rpm -posted by- labelboy

The hose is definately toasted. I did take it off and wrapped it profusely with duct tape. I live out in the sticks and won't be able to get to a wrecking yard soon. It is running a bit stronger, but it still is cutting out. Also it is running rough when cold (it wasn't before). It is sucking gas like crazy. Put $10 in and it was on empty in about 40 miles. Can you tell me what the other connection is to the input hose? It goes across to the intake manifold. Also I am unclear about what should be in the airbox. Mine has no temp sensor or a shutter. All I have is a Chiltons manual. It really is confusing trying to follow which components belong to which series and where they are located. It covers everything from 200 series on up. I believe my FI is LH Jetronic 2.4. Any help greatly appreciated.

Yes the hose is collapsing. What is causing this. A friend of mine said this is just the intercooler catching up to the turbo.

[RWD] [700] 1990 740Turbo stalling out at 3500rpm -posted by- labelboy

The check engine lite came on and all of a sudden the car starts to stall when I get to 3500RPM. Has no power on hills. I took the 016 Mass Airflow Sensor off and sprayed it off with carb cleaner. Engine lite went off but problem persists. Also blowing black smoke. Any thoughts on how to track the problem down. I'm not very familiar with drivabiliy components. I've been trying to use a chiltons manual but its almost worthless. Help!
