[RWD] [700] [1990] Has Anyone Tried This? Electric A/C? -posted by- Evan R

You seem to be forgetting that you will need a hell of an alternator to provide enough juice to run a compressor motor. The York compressors eat about 5 hp from the motor, where are you gonna find a 5hp, 12v motor, and how many more alternators wioll you need?

[RWD] [200] Cross country trip - Preparations -posted by- Evan R

As for weight... how's your rear suspension? I re-bushed mine and added MOOG cargo-coils. I then moved from MI to NV at a gross weight of 4700lb. An '84 245Diesel weighs about 3200 when empty. So figure 1500lb of cargo.

All this with 82hp. Made it here just fine

[RWD] [200] Gosh, I get 40mpg highway -posted by- Evan R

that was true... last year. Now, Diesel is about $0.10 less per gallon. I buy 10 gallons and put 6 gallons of used vegetable oil in the tank.

The gasser has what, around 120hp? I have 82. That's only 33% less power.

I'm not in any hurry.

It takes all kinds...

[RWD] [200] cruise control ? what situations does the light not go on. -posted by- Evan R

So, I've owned 40 or more 240's. I have never ever ever seen a "cruise" light on any 240 cluster.

Where is this "cruise" light you speak of? Is this OEM/dealer cruise, or an aftermarket product?

If I recall correctly, there is an inline fuse in the line that brings power to the crusie brain. Check that. Check the adjustment of your brake (and clutch, if equipped) switches.

[RWD] [200] Non functioning AC? Get some air moving in your 240 passenger compartment -posted by- Evan R

haha, I have two vents!

Why? my can *has* no ECU. It's a Diesel!

It's not that hard to relocate a gasser's ECU to below the glovebox and install a real vent on the passenger side.

The problem would be finding a kick panel with the vent opening. You need to find a Diesel, a Canadian B21A (carb'd) car, or a pre-Lambda Sond B20/21F car.

('75-77 Non cali cars only)

[RWD] [200] [1986] Oil filter relocation on 240 DL? -posted by- Evan R

The filter stud on a B21/23/230 is 3/4" x 16tpi - same as damn near every Ford filter ever. So any kit ofr a Ford V8 will work on a 240.

[RWD] [200] Should I have the fuse box replaced? -posted by- Evan R

the fusebox will respond to a good gleaning and re-tightening of the clips. Nothing is to be gained by replacing it. Use the search function, it will help.

General hint: If you want to own a 17-year old car, you will have to learn to fix things yourself. Otherwise, it will eat you alive.

[RWD] [200] 79 245 is there a cheaper way to bypass the AC compressor than IPD's $50 piece? -posted by- Evan R

depending on the junkyard, or the friendly confines of the Internet...

You could actually use VOLVO OEM brackets. This moves the p/s pump down where the a/c compressor is, and eliminates the a/c.

[RWD] [200] [1987] You missed one -posted by- Evan R

My '84 245 was rated by the EPA at 35 city, 41 highway. If driven conservatively, it gets darn close to that mpg.

Unless you meant miles per gallon of GASOLINE. My 245 won't go very far at all on gasoline.

[RWD] [200] Why so many solder joint failures? -posted by- Evan R

Same reasons the early 80's saw so much crappy wiring & paint, and not just on Volvos.

The dawn of the new environmental era. Solder contains lead, paint & wiring insulation contain other toxins. Manufacturers were trying to find ways to make such things in more environmentally friendly ways. Some of the experiments were less successful than others ;)

[RWD] B21, B23, B230 engines -posted by- Evan R

The B230K was an interference engine. No other B230 was. The B230K can be identified by the single downdraft carburetor, and was never sold in North America.

The B230F engine with the smaller bearings (low friction) was 1985-1992. My last one was still running strong when I sold the car at 335k.

If you are replacing a K-Jet engine, you will need a head from a K-jet car.
