[AWD] [850] [1996] I am at a loss here -posted by- metzger850

The problems seems to be fixed. It hasn't missed a beat since the rotor was replaced. The guys @ the repair shop were kidding me about "not finishing the job".....

Klaus-

Local Volvo shop said the rotor was the issue, and replaced same. They said that rotors can look ok, but have too much internal resistance.

Hopefully, this will cure the problem.

Klaus:

I checked all the connectors, and they look fine.

What are CPS wires?

Also pulled the injectors to check for sealing, and tightened the intake manifold. Still misses @ idle.

I gave up, so it's at the local indy Volvo shop now.

[AWD] [850] Odd Engine Mis-Fire on '96 850 -posted by- metzger850

Drove the can again last night. It dropped a cylinder sporadically all the way to redline. Didn't run bad under light load. Problem seems worse when engine is hot. Will check plugs tomorrow, but I installed them 20k miles ago....

[AWD] [850] Odd Engine Mis-Fire on '96 850 -posted by- metzger850

Problem seemed fixed, but I started the car last night (after driving then sitting for 2 hours), and it had a miss @ idle and wouldn't accept much throttle w/o stumbling. After an "Italian tune-up" it seemed much better.
Maybe a fuel injector is leaking?

Thanks for you message! I replaced the fuel filter last night, and the problem seems to be fixed. When I removed the outflow hose, only a few drops of gas came out. How long do the plug wires normally last?

[AWD] [850] Odd Engine Mis-Fire on '96 850 -posted by- metzger850

My 850 will not "accept" much throttle. It starts fine and idles smooth, and will rev ok if the pedal is pushed very gradually. But, moving the pedal quickly or very much will result in an engine mis-fire with severe stumble. In other words, if I "baby" it from idle, it runs ok. But, if the pedal is mashed, it shudders, shakes and won't rev. No CEL is present now, but it did light for a brief period several days ago. Plugs and O2 sensor have less than 20K miles, rotor and crank-position sensor about 3k miles. Original plug wires (103K miles). Not sure about fuel filter. Any suggestions?

[AWD] [850] [1996] Fuel Tank Vent Line -posted by- metzger850

Thanks! The purge line is where I thought it was.

Replaced the dist. cap and crank sensor last night. Will let everyone know if that fixed the problem. Have also uncovered the fuel pump and dropped the back seat so I can listen to see if it cycles if/when it the car stalls again. Also ready to check the schrader valve on the fuel rail if it stalls.

[AWD] [850] [1996] Fuel Tank Vent Line -posted by- metzger850

Does anyone know where the line from the fuel tank (and charcoal cannister) enters the intake manifold? I'm thinking it sticks-out from the front driver's side of the intake manifold, and runs to a electric solenoid mounted on the radiator. But, I'm not sure.

Thanks,

[AWD] [850] [1996] Hot start stalling -posted by- metzger850

Klaus-

I looked-at the cam sensor last night, wriggled the wire while running to no effect. The wire's not close to any plug wires.

If I understand correctly, the cam sensor is only used during start-up, and my car will start (sometimes, but runs rough) after dying. Last Friday, the car died at an intersection when the accelerator was pressed (and wouldn't start) after being driven for 3 miles (from cold start-up). It started and ran fine the next morning. So, I'm thinking it's not a cam sensor.

I guess it's possible that an injector could stick open, but that usually doesn't happen when the car's running smoothly. I have been using fuel injector cleaner for the last 18k miles (when I bought the car).

So, I ordered a crank sensor and new dist. cap. Hope this fixes the issue!

Thanks!

[AWD] [850] [1996] Hot start stalling -posted by- metzger850

Thanks. No check engine lights.... I think it's the crank position sensor.
I read a post that said the cam position sensor only affects start-up, and my car started and ran (roughly) today. In the past, when it wouldn't start (hot), it seemed to try to fire just when the key was turned-off; which sounds like fuel starvation. I just found a reference in the Haynes manual that says the crank sensor tells the ecu if the motor is rotating, and the ecu will cut-off the fuel pump relay if it doesn't think the motor is rotating. So, I'm going to order a crank sensor.

[AWD] [850] [1996] Hot start stalling -posted by- metzger850

Checked thes vacuum lines and inlet hoses previously. Tried plugging the line from the vapor cannister (I think!), but this made no difference. The problem has happened three times at, or immediately after getting gasoline (not a fill-up).

Thanks.

[AWD] [850] [1996] Hot start stalling -posted by- metzger850

My 850 (with only 100k miles!) has been intermittantly stalling after sitting for a few minutes (only when warmed-up). Usually runs fine, and always starts cold. But, once in a while, it starts, runs rough, and won't take any "gas". If I can keep it running, the problem clears-up after a minute or so. If it dies, it can't be restarted for 10-15 minutes. I've had it at two Volvo shops, and they can't find the problem (no codes). Out of desperation, replaced the fuel pump relay, but this had no effect. It has a new: fuel filter, plugs, O2 sensor, battery, +battery cable and alternator.

Could the cam sensor or crank sensor cause these symptoms?

[AWD] [850] Fault code 0182 -posted by- metzger850

I've replaced the O2 sensor, cleaned the throttle-body, replaced the small hose that runs parallel to the PCV hose (it was ruptured) but I still get a "rich condition left bank" code in about 40 miles (after OBD II is cleared).

The car has 88k miles, and runs perfect. What else should I look at??

[AWD] [850] [1996] ABS modules -posted by- metzger850

No, the guy who switched it kept it.

After reading your site about cooling issues (adding heatsinks) causing the problems, I made a metal heat shield around the ABS unit, with insulation inside. It took about 15 minutes, and I thought it would be fun to see if it helps.
