[RWD] [700] Heater control valve quality -posted by- R.S.

It just happen to me. Valve blew apart in my hand while trying to tighten the clamp. Used 1/2 copper tube ( 5/8 OD ) but flattened it out in the middle to stop water flow. Don't need heat in Arizona for now :)

[RWD] [700] Crank Position Sensor Bracket -posted by- R.S.

Ryan,

Drill and a dremel worked fine. Tried to pull tranny out but got stuck on one pesky bolt. So I had to abort, and went for a drill. Was done in 2 hours and back on the road today. I only had to trim about half an inch on each side.

Thank you

[RWD] [700] Pulling the tranny vs. engine+tranny -posted by- R.S.

Thank you Simon for your response.

Started to pull the tranny out and like you say without proper tools ( jacks, hoists or lifts) it is an impossible job. So after a full day of pain i was ready to pull it apart. I had just one bolt left. And I could not remove one of the bolts holding converter to the plate. I had to abort the job. I opted to "trim" bellhousing near the sensor to remove these 2 bolts. Used a drill and a dremel. It was easy. I was done in 2 hours. I figured that with 300K on the car its usefull lifespan is almoust over and I should be looking at getting ready for replacement vechicle. If it was 100K miles than I would do a complete maintenance and get to these seals and gaskets. But now I won't complain about little drip on the driveway. Thank you for sharing.

Back on the road :)

[RWD] [700] Crank Position Sensor Bracket removal. HELP !! -posted by- R.S.

Hello !

CPS braket is brocken. How long are the bolts holding it. Do I have to remove tranny out ? Or loosening it and sliding down will get enough clerance for a swap? Idea is not to fully separate tranny with the engine. Another option is to cut bellhousing out. It's aluminium so it can be cut relativly easy? I dread the option of tranny dropping to the floor and not be able to put it back in, or a damage to it. Please help!!!

Thank you,

[RWD] [700] Crank Position Sensor Bracket -posted by- R.S.

Simon,

Why did you ended up pulling engine with transmission together? Is it possible to pull just tranny out? I'm getting reddy to do it tomorrow. Parts are in. My local dealer took just a day to get them in out of Cali.

Thank you

[RWD] [700] Crank Position Sensor Bracket PN and PRICE info -posted by- R.S.

Thank you Bruce. Parts are on order. About $ 100 with a new sensor. Did it happen to you? I wonder why these fail. Brackets are cast metal and not really working parts. They just sit there.....should be forever.

Thanks a lot

[RWD] [700] Crank Position Sensor Bracket -posted by- R.S.

Thank you Ryan. I wonder why the bracket failed in the first place. Car started making noises like it blew exhaust gasket just before it stopped with a loud clunk. At first i thought connecting rod broke, but i can turn over engine with a starter with out any trouble. Parts are on order with local dealer.

[RWD] [700] Crank Position Sensor Bracket -posted by- R.S.

Hello Bricksters !

After 300k miles my beloved 90' 765 is a little sick since last night.
It turns out that crankshaft sensor contacted fly wheel and broken itself off. From the looks of it, I think I will need to pull the tranny out to get it replaced. Do you guys think I can get away by dremmeling bell housing out for the screws to come out? I've never pulled tranny before and have a feeling that something else may go wrong! Ok, it's 110F outside now. Any thoughts?

[RWD] [700] do not gut the cat -posted by- R.S.

This engine "expects" to see some kind of back pressure. And gutting a cat will decrease it. It will give you some more umph... but don't be surprised if you start using more oil and gas. Not to mention the noise level...

[RWD] [700] tinkering w/ turbo....what's this thing?!? -posted by- R.S.

That is called “extended oil change interval". By constantly adding fresh oil to the engine to replace lost one, you can safely extend your oil changes indefinitely. Just change a filter once in a while.

Just kidding......

[RWD] [700] GAS PRICES! -posted by- R.S.

What happened to hunting Caribou? It must be out of style, even for the Indians. And the Caribou don't mind heated pipe line at all. They even like to swim in the goods that spill from it when it breaks. Like one this year. What was it? How many hundreds of gallons? Maybe a million. Nobody knows for sure. And I'm sure those poor seals did not mind when a drunk Exxon operator took a crap and run aground. Costed them 5 bill in penalties. But they didn't care. They made many more billions in profits anyway.
It is OK Will, everyone gets his kicks somewhere. I would love to visit a couple of National Parks in Alaska and experience the thrill myself. And I'm sure it is a thrill when your hard work pays off, in a well that produces.
I'm all for conservation and using energy wisely.

Thank you,

Robert,

[RWD] [700] But how obtrusive would they appear from the beach when they're 20+ miles offshore? A mere spot on the horizon? N.M.I. -posted by- R.S.

It depends on the "vanishing point". Would you see it from the beach? Probably. I thought the idea of being on the beach was the clean horizon line. Kind of the infinite space in front of you. I'm sure people would get over it. You probably would loose a status of one of the greatest beaches in US. And than it goes your tourism both domestic and international. So what ever you gain in saving on electricity you will loose on travel revenues. Catch 22.
You want to save some "juice"? How about, we all convert to compact fluorescent lighting in our houses. I did, and light is brighter and cheaper to run. You can scrape one wind mill. Not needed. I reduced demand.

[RWD] [700] re the Wind Farm .... -posted by- R.S.

Ken,

All politics aside...wind farms look scary to me. They only look pretty on the pictures. We were just coming back from San Diego this spring and came up on them. With out knowing they are there we passed a hill and all of the sudden there was this mill close to the road. It was huge with 3 blades slowly rotating. And than there was more. Hundreds of them. What used to be a picturesque valley, turned into a factory. I really don't think you would want to be near it fishing or boating.
Regardless of who owns what on Cape Cod it is really a magnificent stretch of beaches. And the emptiness of the ocean is relaxing. You can see for miles away. We had a great time there. We really enjoy National Parks and undeveloped (uncomercialized) atmosphere they provide. That it why I'm opposed to drilling in Alaska. As we all know 'The Greed" will destroy everything in the path to profit.

I and you are not going to change the world and a price of gas. It is after all just one issue in life. One variable in the long equasssion of affordability of living.

So enjoy your beautiful coast.

Thank you,

Robert,

[RWD] [700] Head gasket longevity. -posted by- R.S.

Norm,

B.C. is really nice place.

Your oil loss is really minimal. I would not wory about it at all. Your coolant loss is more critical. Here is what I would do: Go the store and get a bottle of "copper block weld..just in case. Be prudent and prepared and go on vacation...enjoy life. If you break down have some water with you so you can top of the rad between fillups. If your leak gets worse treat it with some "mystery goo" and keep on going. Would be a lot worse if it was a rubber hose.

When you come back, you look at that leak more closely....Are you sure it is not a water pump? There is a little o-ring there. Between a head and pump body and timing belt cover. Hard to see there. Don't spoil your vacation. You give the car for service now, and it will be a week before you get it back. And it may not end @ $ 900. Check that water pump again. It is an easy fix and usually a yearly thing....and certainly not $ 900.

Where are you going?

Do you have an auto alarm with starter kill switch? I had to deal with this problem for few years before I traced it to the alarm. Just bypassed it. No more issues with starting even when it is 115 F outsideand 350 F under the hood.

[RWD] [700] Only $2.75? Don't take a road trip this summer -- you'll stroke out! But whether you deserved this or not, and what you can do about it, depends on who you voted for ..... -posted by- R.S.

Dan,

Have you ever seen a wind farm? .

I propose one right of the coast of Cape Cod. A couple of thousands of them. This way folks that drive down to the relaxing beaches can have something else to look at. Huge wind mills 300 to 400 feet across. They always turning.....

There is one by San Diego we saw recently. It looked like a child of Stalinist industrial revolution: Huge, expensive to build and not very efective; actually pretty scary.....!?

Good luck....You should see it...

[RWD] [700] GAS PRICES! -posted by- R.S.

Do you really believe that drilling in Alaska will change a price of gas?!

If you do you need to look at current situation. We don't run out of gas!!!! Not at least in my town. Even when the gas started to approach $ 4 a gal, we did not see any shortages at the gas station. Just drive up and fill'em up. Market price of oil above $70 a barrel gives an excuse to raise the prices. Oil is now below $ 65 and we don't see prices going down that much or fast as they rose before. It is all greed.....and they know it: You just going to fill it up any way. And I will to. I have to go to work tomorrow.
So they say we need to drill in Alaska and get more oil. But who is going to reprocess it? So we will end up buying less oil on the international market ( maybe .5 % less) and screw up the environment over there so a few cronies can make few bucks?

The hell with it. Find something else to burn....
