[RWD] [200] 240 shuts down when it idles in gear -posted by- sailing

Last year my 240 would shut down while in gear, when the summer got here in NC it ran like new. Now it's cold and while sitting at a stop light in gear it shuts down 3 out of 10 stops. Sometimes the check engine light comes on. I am not a mechanic and my volvo dealer treats me like a king when I get the bill. The dealer says they all do that and charged me 75.00 bucks to leave it there for a cold start. They said it was fuel so I changed to high test with no help.
I have hear I should clean the flame trap but one dealer removed the filter years ago.

I have used seafoam, replaced air and fuel filters, rotor button ect.
I can live with this problem but my wife can't.
any idea out there. .

Thanks you all. The shop can repair the seal next week. I know where the flame trap is but the dealer suggested leaving out the plastic filter.
How can I clean the flame trap and should the filter be replaced.

[RWD] [200] [1993] Front and rear seals leak with syntheic oil in 93 240 with 240 k -posted by- sailing

I started using synthetic on over a year ago and had to repace the front main seal. A few weeks later the rear is seeping, leaving an oz. on the drive after a few miles. Not a lot oil just messy and makes the under side stink.. The Volvo dealer said the rear seal is a $960.00 repair but suggested I go back to regular oil for a while as it may stop the leak. He said the new oils are too slick and cause the seals to fail by keeping them open and weak.
Is this possible, or would you get the repair done? The
local repair shop says he will do the rear seal for $260.00 total as he did the front a few week ago,
The car is clean runs good and we love it and plan to keep it..

Is it possible the seeping can be cured or is this a joke. My 95 miata valve cover started seeping after I used the same oil in it. The rear volvo seals are the same that came on the car in 93.

I have replaced the temp sending unit but the meter is up and down and read hot when the engine is started cold even this winter. Should I reaplace the cluster next? I have had the problem for a year and I know the car is not running hot but my wife is concerned that if it run hot we would not know.

[RWD] [200] [1993] Check engine light on and wallet empty. -posted by- sailing

My check engine light comes on but the car runs fine. Repair shop said it needed fuel additive and it runs fine but the light came back on about 5000 miles later. I put it in the shop and was charged over 1,300.00 dollars and the light came back on a week later. I took the battery cable off for a few seconds and it went off again.
I wonder if there is something that cost less than 1,300.00 dollars I can try, if it comes on again.

The freon was OK and today the clutch stoped kicking in and the the AC is DOA. Should I replace the clutch or the compressor? It's a 93 so the whole unit is old.

Thanks for any ideas I am not skilled in the repair area.

[RWD] [200] [1993] cold 93 240 engine sounds like a diesel. -posted by- sailing

My wife just returned from the NC coast putting over 500 miles on this old girl and she got 28 MPG and the engine is as smooth as new. The secret may be like an old computer, just never shut it down.

After the 240 dies I have no idea where to get that much car for the bucks and may consider a reconditioned engine.

My 93 volvo sounds like a diesel when started cold. After it warms the noise goes away. My Mechanic says it's normal for a car with 220,000 miles but I have had 300,000 on a 240 that did not do this. Should I be alarmed??
