<title>[OPINIONS] A recurrent theme -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi All,
Just read this story in the paper(sorry, don`t watch TV much these days!)&#x26; thought about the connection between the recent college prof. incident &#x26; the Dylan incident. Theme seems to be neighbor observes &#x22;suspicious individual possibly prowling neighborhood&#x22;; call police! Paranoia??
Being Canadian &#x26; living in a rural environment, maybe I`m not qualified to make any comment at all! I do note any vehicles that drive past the ranch that don`t appear to be &#x22;ag&#x22; related. However, I don`t call local police(they likely wouldn`t respond anyway!).
Good on Bob for keeping his &#x22;cool&#x22;!

<title>[AWD] [S40-V40] 2008 S40 2.4 L Engine: Snow and mountains? -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
Do`nt know where you live but maybe BC or Alberta?
Anyway, Klaus is right (as usual). If you are &#x22;sold&#x22; on getting a Volvo, you might consider a V70 &#x26; invest in some quality snow tires for mountain driving.
Also dealer pricing is ridiculous here in Canada. Wife bought an 03 XC70 a few years ago from local dealer with 70K on it. Paid 30K cash &#x26; they wouldn`t budge even a little . If you check comparative prices at US dealers such as Waltrip Volvo In Tenn. or Tasca Volvo in RI you will see the savings to be had. If you live in Vancouver you could check dealers in Washington.

<title>[AWD] Labor to install DIM on the XC? -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi Marty &#x26; Klaus,
Thanks for your responses re: DIM install.
As this is a CDN car I have to get a DIM with CDN specs. I called Waltrip Volvo last week &#x26; was told that the DIM US specs is $735 but they can`t ship a DIM with US specs to Canada &#x26; I do`nt know but suspect that it may not be legal to install a US specs DIM in a Canadian vehicle. DIM price at local dealer is $1470.
Guess I`m &#x22;hooped&#x22; on this one. Might have to sell a few more cows!!

<title>[AWD] Labor to install DIM on the XC? -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
Well, it looks like we`ll have to bite the bullet &#x26; have the dealer put in a new DIM on wife`s XC70. WE checked a few things here at the local indie shop &#x26; all looked good; no loose connections or frayed wiring.
New DIM is $1400 CDN. Any ideas how much labor should be on this repair?
 Thanks,

<title>[AWD] [XC] [2003] Instrument cluster failure: Help! -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
Earlier in the week all the dash lights, guages, etc suddenly stopped working on my wife`s XC as she was driving to work. She had the local indie check fuses but all were fine. The SRS airbag service message later came on &#x26; she had that reset at the dealer.
The instrument cluster has been working intermittently since then but today was not working at all.
WE have plans to leave for New Mexico on Monday but I am now reluctant to take the car &#x26; risk getting stranded in Wyoming.
Anybody else experienced this issue? What was the diagnosis &#x26; solution?
 Thanks,
 Rich

<title>[AWD] [XC] [2003] &#x26;quot;SRS Airbag Service Urgent&#x27; message -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
In a post earlier in the week I wrote that all the dash lights in my wife`s XC went off as she was driving to work. Thinking that it might be just a fuse I told her to stop by our local &#x22;indie&#x22; to have him take a look. He checked the fuses which were Ok but when she started the car the SRS message came on. The dash lights work now but I`m concerned that the airbags would not work in the &#x22;unlikely event of a water landing&#x22;. I know that she will have to take the car to the dealer to have the SRS reset
Has anyone else had this experience &#x26; what the cause/resolution?
 Thanks,
 Rich</description>

<title>[AWD] [XC] [2003] Just a fuse? -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
Just got the panic call from the LP on her way to work that the dash lights aren`t working &#x26; no speedo, etc. but car runs fine. Is this likely a fuse problem?
Fortunately, our indie mechanic`s shop is between home &#x26; work so I told her to stop by his shop.
 Your thoughts?

<title>[OPINIONS] Provence -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
Sounds like you had a wonderful Euro experience! A friend has just returned from a similiar trip doing the the French countryside tho` I haven`t had the &#x22;debriefing&#x22; yet.
The CDN parts manufacturer referenced by Bill is Frank Stronach of Magna International, a big player who has lost millions in his thoroughbred operation based in Florida(shareholders haven`t been too happy with that side of the operation!). AS of yesterday he was in talks with the Feds here about building an electric car &#x26; needing about $300 million to get the venture off the ground. One more capitalist &#x22;bellying up to the trough&#x22;!

<title>[AWD] [850] [1995] The dealer for a new cap? -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
Klaus always has solid advice but maybe going to the dealer for a new cap might be expensive.
A few years ago my wife stopped by the local dealer for a cap for her 95 850. They charged her $60!!!!! What!! this a piece of plastic!!
Maybe this part would be much cheaper in the US. Lately I`ve been buying parts from IPD as it`s still wayyyy cheaper to pay the exhange plus shipping.
 Good luck with your 850

<title>[AWD] [XC] [2003] Now the rear bearings -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Klaus,
I agree with your &#x22;soon&#x22; reference especially when you take your vehicle to the dealership. However, my local &#x22;indie&#x22; is a shop I`ve been dealing with several years &#x26; his integrity is beyond reproach. You do`nt survive in a small town for very long if you rip folks off.
 The bearings are noisy, I don`t drive the car all that often &#x26; many women including my wife don`t seem to pick up on &#x22;unusual&#x22; noises when they are driving. &#x22;Hmm, that noise wasn`t there last week, maybe I should get it checked out!&#x22;
Also my local guy lets us supply our own parts which is as you know very unusual.
 Must email IPD!

<title>[AWD] [XC] [2003] Now the rear bearings -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>We had the front whl bearings replaced on the LP`s XC just before Xmas &#x26; had it in the shop yesterday for T Belt &#x26; water pump service. Our mechanic told us the rear bearings should be replaced soon.
The XC has just clocked a 100K &#x26; Klaus suggests bearings on the AWD have a shorter life span than the FWD. It would seem that the bearings haven`t lasted as long as I would have expected but maybe I`m wrong here.
Guess I`ll get these bearings from IPD as they have the SKF brand. The front bearings were replaced with after market brand &#x26; God knows what they were but expensive at $365 each!!
 Input?

<title>[AWD] [XC] [2003] XC70 AWD differences/improvements over the years? -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
Yeh, the Haldex system was introduced in `03.
The bevel gear may still be problematic despite the Haldex system. My wife has an 03XC which she bought from the dealer. Car had 42K on it, the bevel gear was replaced @ 60K under warranty(a 3 thousand &#x22;hit&#x22;!!). No one at the dealer seemed to be able to explain why bevel gear had failed. Maybe the previous owner had driven many miles on the donut tire!!
That`s our bevel gear experience. Despite that, we love the car!!

<title>[AWD] All Season recommendations for XC70 -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi All,
Now that we`re &#x22;just&#x22; about thru winter(ran a set of Nokians which were good on ice/snow but very noisy) my Lp`s Xc will need a set of all seasons. The car had Pirelli`s on when we bought but I wasn`t impressed.
Any particular recommendations based on experience. Wear factor, price(not really a factor)?
 Thanks,

<title>[OPINIONS] Afghanistan -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>
I have to agree with T.Lyttle. Excluding the nuclear factor &#x26; the Al Queda connextion, of what interest is Pakistan? Of course, the above issues are of great importance.
I guess my beef is the Afghanistan &#x22;mission&#x22; as our politicos deem it. I think anyone with any kind of strategic insight knows that is a losing venture. Every country that has gone in there militarily has emerged with their butts thoroughly kicked. The Russians proved that their version of &#x22;shock &#x26; awe&#x22; didn`t work in the long run. The Canadian forces have lost 116 at last count &#x26; what`s the point?? The gov`t pitch is freedom, women`s rights, education.......... while I suspect that the real reason is to secure oil pipelines.
 My .02

<title>[AWD] [V70] [1998] I forgot to mention -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Jim
I forgot to mention that my ex wife had a 98 AWD that she put a zillion miles on &#x26; never had any serious problems. Definitely the tranny &#x26; bevel gear stood up to back road travel as she lived in a fairly remote area for several years.
Last year she traded in the 98 for an 06 XC70 which she loves. I doubt she got much of a trade in for the 98.
WE live in an area where we really don`t have much need for an AWD for most of the winter but when you do need it you REALLY need it!!
Good Luck &#x26; keep us posted!

<title>[AWD] [V70] [1998] Mostly XCs for sale -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
I think it may be misleading to infer that because there mostly XCs for sale that they are on the market because there is something wrong with them. True, there were bevel gear problems on the earlier models.
Here in my local market there are many more XC`s for sale than there V70 models. I think that is reflection of sales numbers for XCs. Anecdotally, I see many more XCs on the road, practically every wagon is an XC.
My wife has an 03 XC &#x26; it`s been an excellent car. Before that, she had a 95 850T wagon.
If the car you are looking at is available I`d sure give it serious consideration.

<title>[OPINIONS] The rising popularity of station wagons -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi,
I agree! I`ve had a number of Volvo wagons over the years, even had a `61 Duett for a month(sold to a guy who was HOT to get a Duett)&#x26; later,a 122, a series of 245`s.
The first time I saw an 850 wagon on the road I was impressed greatly &#x26; later bought a 95 855T(still have it, passed along to daughter#2) Wife has an 03 XC70 which I think is the best looking wagon on the road. My wife is a real wagon person plus we`re dog people so having a wagon is really convenient for our lifestyle.
Around this part of the country you see mostly Volvo wagons, a few sedans here`n`there.

<title>[AWD] Klaus: TBelt response -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Hi Klaus,
In past you have &#x22;reprimanded&#x22; me for posting a question specifically to you. However, in regard to my inquiry re: T Belt brands, in your first response you suggested that Continental was reliable &#x26; &#x22;LOTS&#x22; of people had used that brand without issues &#x26; in your second response you say that there are, indeed, issues with the Continental brand as sold by IPD &#x26; Groton FCP.
Hmm, should I read between the lines &#x26; just buy the parts from local Volvo dealer(expensive) here in Canada.
 Thanks(as always!)

<title>[AWD] Why would you want to?? -posted by- rancher rick</title>
<description>Tony,
I see part of your point here but truly, DRL`s have proved to be effective from a safety perspective. Is your position another example of &#x22;gov`t isn`t going to tell me what to do?&#x22;. If so, perhaps you move to Alberta!
I`ve experienced a few personal instances of DRL`S being effective, specially at dusk.
Motorcycle helmets re: safety is a lame argument as here in Canada there aren`t really any standards other than legislation that cyclists must wear a helmet.
Do you drive without a seatbelt? Would you if it wan`t mandated by law?
