[RWD] [140-160] 164 Front bumper -posted by- b4_ford

That was my car, I sold it recently. I didn't do any of the body work on it so I never really looked at the bumper mounts. Another option that I've heard of is swapping to the earlier, smaller bumper. I've never done it myself so I don't know how it would turn out.

[RWD] [140-160] 164 door panels -posted by- b4_ford

You can fit any 4 door 240 panels on a '75 164. Just make sure that you get all the mounting hardware from the donor car. You may have to drill a couple of mounting holes, it's been several years since I last did this so I don't remember.

[RWD] [140-160] good b20b engine needed -posted by- b4_ford

[RWD] [140-160] [1972] Clunky steering -posted by- b4_ford

Ive noticed on the 145 that there is a slight clunk that I can hear and feel through the steering wheel when I rotate it counterclockwise about a 1/4-1/2 turn. It is most pronounced when the car is parked. I'm presuming that it is a bushing, but before I go crawling around I was hoping that someone might have a pretty good idea of what the most likely cause and repair is. Looking for direction as I will be troubleshooting on my own.

[RWD] [140-160] [1972] 1972 145 child safety locks? -posted by- b4_ford

Not the seat belt hook. All child safety lock mechanisms that I've seen have been on the rear doors themselves. The mechanism that I'm talking about is screwed to the half circle area that I usually see facing forward on the B pillar below the seat belt anchor. Maybe I should take a picture.

My 145 has a button or lever of some kind on both sides, mounted on the B pillar, just below where the front seat belt hangers are. I've never seen these before, what are they and how do they operate?

[RWD] [140-160] Shoulder belts on a 145 -posted by- b4_ford

My '72 145 had lap belts in the back seat. However the holes for the vertical rods were there, covered by rubber grommets. I pulled belts from a 90's 245 and installed them in the back seat. I only had to drill a couple of holes to accommodate the reels. I will be replacing the front belts also, although that requires drilling a hole in the transmission tunnel.

My '72 is probably an early one as most that I have seen had shoulder belts in the back. Check and see if your '71 has grommets covering the vertical rod holes. If they aren't there, it might be pretty tricky to get shoulder belts installed in a safe manner.

[RWD] [140-160] [1972] Poor/rough idle when cold. -posted by- b4_ford

Just picked up a '72 145, fuel injected. Doesn't like to idle when cold, dies if you don't keep your feet on the gas. There is a hose that goes from the front of the head to the intake that I believe has to do with cold start that is currently disconnected. PO disconnected it and blocked it off while checking for vacuum leaks. Car runs fine once it is warmed up. I'm more used to dealing with carbs so this is unfamiliar territory for me. Besides the obvious of reconnecting the hose, what are some other suggestions as possible causes of trouble?

[RWD] [140-160] Seeking IPD B20 engine brace opinions -posted by- b4_ford

I have an IPD B20engine brace that I'm considering installing. It is the type that goes from the back of the head to the wheel well and requires drilling. I have the reinforcement bracket for it. Before I drill the hole and install it I would like to get opinions from those of you that have used it. Good? Bad? Any difference in performance?

[RWD] [140-160] [1972] 1972 145 simple questions -posted by- b4_ford

A few basic 1972 145 questions:

1. What is the latch mechanism for lifting the rear seat bottom up? Is it one lever that releases both sides like on later 245 wagons? I felt around and couldn't find a lever of any sort. Seats have been recovered so it's possible that the original latching mechanism is gone.

2. This is the first '72 that I found that does not have 3 point seat belts in the rear. Is it likely that the mounting points are there for installing three point seat belts?

3. Has anyone installed a rear facing third row seat from a 245 into a 145, complete with seat belts?

4. Headliner is trashed, will a 245 headliner fit and any tricks/tips regarding removal/installation?

[RWD] [140-160] [1975] 164 water pump leak -posted by- b4_ford

Update: Upon closer examination it isn't leaking from the lower pipe connection. It seems to be leaking from further up and out towards the blades. On the bottom of my spare water pump there is a small opening and it seems as though that is where the leak is. Am I correct in assuming that there are some sort of internal seals that have probably failed? Looks like it's time to install the replacement after all...

[RWD] [140-160] [1975] 164 water pump leak -posted by- b4_ford

I replaced it once using a little bit of RTV. The leak got worse. When I originally pulled it, it seemed as though there was some type of silicone on the old gasket. Same thing with the 140 that I just pulled apart in the wrecking yard. Is there some other sort of sealant that I should be using or is grease/fat the only thing that I need? Any tips are appreciated, I don't want to do this for a 3rd time!

[RWD] [140-160] Favorite year for a 164 and why? -posted by- b4_ford

Styling wise, I prefer the early ones. Although on of the previous owners did some pretty cool cosmetic improvements on my '75.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f71/b4_ford/ExplOregon%202009/CIMG9114.jpg

I like my '75 because so many trim parts interchange with the 240. I was able to replace the heater control valve with a $2 part from a 1988 245. I've heard that the earlier FI engines were more desirable. Mine mated to a BW35 is a dog, and a gas hog at that. If I were planning on keeping the car I would locate an 8 bolt flywheel and put in the spare M410 that I have. I'm of the opinion that any of the model years can be made to look nice and with a decent amount of engine work, any one of them can get up and scoot.

Regardless, it's for sale so that I can get another 145.

[RWD] [140-160] [1975] 164 water pump leak -posted by- b4_ford

Isolated the water leak on the '75 164. Appears to be coming from where the lower water pump connection is, probably a bad seal. I've never replaced a pump or seals before, but looking at my re-manufactured unit, it doesn't look too bad. I have a kit of seals for it also. Since I have to get into it a little I might as well just install the replacement pump. What type of hose and connection is down there and where can I get new hoses?
