[AWD] [XC] [1999] 1999 Volvo V70XC - run away from this thing, don't look back -posted by- MAL

AWD isnt something the driver turns off or on in a Volvo. In 1999 it is to be avoided all together.

I vote for a 1998 V70 FWD. Most reliable car I've ever owned!

[AWD] [XC] XC70 driveline or suspension chatter/vibration -posted by- MAL

Just to follow up.....

brought the XC back to the tranny shop, put it up on the lift, had been reassembled OK. Drove it for another week, tranny went into limp mode, threw a bunch of codes. Long and short of it.....defective replacement valve body. Replaced free of charge, been driving it a week now.....seems fine...still amazing to be going through this with a car showing 50 K miles on the odometer!

[AWD] [XC] XC70 driveline or suspension chatter/vibration -posted by- MAL

Wonder if anyone has had this happen.....

Just had a rebuilt tranny put into my '03 XC70, rather disappointing since it just turned 50K miles. In the past week of normal commute driving I've had a half dozen instances of a vibration or resonance that is either coming from the drivetrain or suspension, I honestly cant tell. Its not unlike driving on one of those warning strips on the side of the road, only lasts 2 to 3 seconds. Everything else seems fine, no error messages or MIL indications. Its only happened in the 30 to 50 mph range at light throttle, mostly on slight upgrade highway. My tranny mechanic says its most likely the tranny adaptive computer reprogramming since it was "wiped" clean during the rebuild. He says give it a couple of hundred miles.

Is it the tranny or is there some other BIG bill coming my way?

Thanks.

[AWD] Seeking towing advice for 2003 XC70 - tranny problems -posted by- MAL

Thanks Klaus. There's consensus on shifting out of drive. Everyone I've spoken to says get it into forth and keep it at 60....Almost regret selling my good old '98 V70. Was more dependable than a Toyota!

[AWD] Seeking towing advice for 2003 XC70 - tranny problems -posted by- MAL

Well, five weeks ago I bought a cream puff '03 XC70 with only 48K miles on it, now I'm faced with the first big repair. My mechanic (independent Volvo guy who knows his stuff)gave it an enthusiastic clean bill of health when I got it. I had him change the oil and filter, and power flush the tranny (filled w/synthetic fluid). I towed my 2000 lb boat and trailer up to NH the following weekend. On the way I got a "Transmission service required" message. Stopped the car, called two local dealer service departments. Pulled the code (I travel with an OBD scanner!). It was P0740 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction. Told them the fluid level was good, no burned smell, seemed to be working fine. They both said "these things can throw faulty codes", dont worry too much about it. So, I cleared the codes and drove on without incident. Two weeks later on the way to work, not towing anything, the same code came on and ten minutes later a loud clunk and the tranny went into limp mode. Was only 2 miles from a dealer, had them diagnose it....they said the tranny is cooked, please pay $4400! Needless to say I had the car towed to a very good tranny shop here north of Boston and they say the TCC is cooked, can be fixed for $1600). Still painful but no where as bad as $4400.

Questions:
The dealer, the tranny shop and my mechanic tell me not to tow with this car. True?

I noticed when buying the factory hitch wiring that I could also add a "tranny shift" module to the wiring in the rear of the car. Does anyone have experience with this module? Might it make this a viable tow vehicle? The car is rated for 3300 lbs, my 2000 lb set up is well withing limits.

I'd value the opinion of any others that have faced this issue...

Thanks.

[AWD] [XC] Opinion on best year XC70 or AWD -posted by- MAL

Hello,

After many good years and miles with a 1998 V70 my wife and I have decided to buy a more recent year Volvo. We're zeroing in on 2003/2004 XC70 or V70 AWD models. They seem to be the best balance of lower miles and low price and great for ski country here in New England. Seems that 10 to 12K gets a pretty decent looking car.

Would anyone care to offer some advice on maintenance and reliability of these years? A local mechanic says stay away from 01/02 years. Too many computer and "software" issues. Are the 03/04 years any better? Are there other "weak spots" I should be looking for on these XCs or AWDs

Any info greatly appreciated.

[AWD] [1998] '98 V70 Window Regulator Removal - need help -posted by- MAL

I hope someone can offer some help......trying to remove a regulator.

I have the panel off, everything is exposed and I've removed the 10mm bolts and the whole regulator assy is loose. But...I dont see how to get it out from here. Does the window need to be lowered? Mine is currently up all the way. Are there clips that hold the regulator scissors to the window? Is there a trick to lowering the window without power to make this easier? Appreciate any guidance anyone can offer.......thanks.
