<title>[AWD] [V70] V70 T5 2001 Gear Box clunk on first -posted by- howardc64</title>
<description>Actually, quite a few issues with this gear box. Read here

http://www.freewebs.com/howardsvolvos/driveline.htm#255210425

I would do the following low cost sequence to try to correct this problem.

1. Get new software loaded... get rid of the stop on neutral feature that wears out these gear boxes
2. Call Volvo dealer with your VIN to see if your B4 servo is a faulty design
3. Flush transmission fluld if none has been done in the last 30k miles
4. check if lower transmission torque mount bushing is ripped. Most are.. replace if worn.

The valve body solenoids also underwent redesigns in the later models so 01s are stuck with a higher failure design.

<title>[AWD] [V70] Re-installing front calipers, specically retaining clips for outer pad -posted by- howardc64</title>
<description>The spring must be tensioned. So it has to clip on the inside (toward the center of the hub) of the caliper bracket.

Actually, I made this mistake before and heard of many others doing the same. When this spring isn&#x27;t tensioned, you will get deeper brake pedal travel. The reason is the outside of the floating caliper isn&#x27;t tensioned by this spring s the caliper will twist under braking and the outer pad will mate against the rotor at an angle. So the piston has to travel further to get the necessary braking power with reduced contact surface area.

<description>There are 4 key low cost things you can do before it gets expensive

- b4 servo cover
- lower transmission torque mount
- transmission fluid drain+fill or flush (depending on history)
- latest TCM software upgrade

After this... it gets expensive. More details here

<description>On my 01 V70 T5, I had intermittent front left turn bulb failures that was moisture related. It turned out to be a socket problem. Volvo has redesigned the socket. A common problem.

You might call Volvo to see if they&#x27;ve redesigned the socket for the bulb you are having problem with.

<title>[TOOLBOX] V70 (&#x27;02) further followup -posted by- howardc64</title>
<description>How do you know it is not running on all cylinders?

FYI, these cars have individual coils directly over the plugs and people have had one go out. But I think you will get a code for that.

There are also wires running to the coils protected under these plastic looms that harden and disintegrate. I read one guy had an exposed wire pinched and shorted out the coil.

Look in &#x22;coil pack wire looms&#x22; under this page I wrote to see the picture of the coils and wirelooms.

http://www.freewebs.com/howardsvolvos/preventive.htm

I agree, pull the plugs and check them if you are sure some cylinders are not firing.

The bump on outside of the belt on the crank pulley is the moving mark. The curved metal is the alignment location.

Here is a full set of info I wrote up on this timing belt job

I&#x27;ve read if you are off by 1 or 2 tooth, the check engine light will come on.

<title>[AWD] [V70] [2002] power steering fluid -posted by- howardc64</title>
<description>Cool, glad you got the right fluid and avoided the mistake I made by reading the manual! I&#x27;m sure you will find Pentosin CHF-11S on your Volvo fluid somewhere. Still should take a look and see if you have a leak somewhere. It is supposed to be a closed system.

Here is a link showing all Euro cars moved over to this fluid for PS hydraulic fluid. Every brand has their own part numbers. But they are all Pentosin CHF-11S :)

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_Volvo_power_steering_fluid_a_mineral_hydraulic_fluid_versus_petroleum

IPD now sells even better fluid that exceed CHF-11S. Here is some info on this fluid and the ipd link

<title>[AWD] [V70] [2002] power steering fluid -posted by- howardc64</title>
<description>Volvo&#x27;s owner&#x27;s manual is wrong from 01-04 for V70/S60/XC70. The actual PS fluid is a synthetic hydraulic fluid called CHF-11S. Most of the European cars switched to this in the last 10 years or so.

How do I know? I put ATF in the system. I just replaced my steering rack due to leaking seals.

If you want to confirm, call your volvo dealer. I&#x27;m sure they will tell you it is the &#x22;green fluid&#x22; which is CHF-11S.

More info here. This fluid isn&#x27;t easy to find at your local auto stores.

<description>I guess if you can make it stop by pushing into the door panel, then the noise isn&#x27;t coming from inside the pillar. There is some serious metal between the door panel and inside the pillar.

Maybe there is something loose under the panel. Here is the directions on taking off the panel.

I took off my rear door panel once, here is what it looks like inside. Lots of noise damping foam :) But also some wires and cables running around.

<title>[AWD] [V70] 01 V70 T5 Automatic 90,000 mile service -posted by- howardc64</title>
<description>Hi Jerry:

fcpgroton does sell CHF-11S at I think $15 a quart + shipping. You have to either email or call them as it isn&#x27;t on the website.

I don&#x27;t have any experience with taking off the nut on the damper pulley so I can&#x27;t really comment. Needless to say, you want to make sure you don&#x27;t rotate it :)

There are timing marks on both the cams and the crank pulley. Cam marker are pretty obvious but the cam marks and cam belt cover&#x27;s alignment marks are about 0.5-1 inch apart (don&#x27;t recall right now). So dead on alignment here still looks ever so slightly off. The crank markers are tricker. Make sure you look at that and learn how to line it up before hand in case any of the gears rotate ever so slightly while the belt is off (Cams have valve lobes that tend to put a little rotational pressure on it)

The cams rotate at a 2X rate compared to the crank. So after I put the belt on, I just rotate the crank ever so slightly forward and backward to check the timing marks to make sure I wasn&#x27;t off by a tooth. The cam marks will move at 2X rate with 1X rate movement on the crank. I do read about people missing one tooth here and there. From what I&#x27;ve read, off by 1 tooth doesn&#x27;t appear to cause the interference valves to impact the piston. You do get an engine error code tho.

<description>If you flush the PS fluid, make sure you use CHF-11S. ATF speced in the manual is wrong.

On timing belt. They sell a 3 piece kit including the pulley as well besides the tensioner + belt to replace any sealed greased rotating mechanisms.

Here are some notes on doing the belt without taking off the damper. It is a bit of a fishing trip to get the belt on tho.

<title>[AWD] [V70] [2004] Transmission fluid. Only Volvo&#x27;s? -posted by- howardc64</title>
<description>This tranny is the weak point of this car. There were design evolutions (valve body, b4 servo cover, transmission computer software) since 2001 introduction of this tranny on Volvos. Maybe they&#x27;ve worked the bugs out by 2004.

There is also no externally replaceable filters for the transmission fluid.

I flush my 01 every 30k miles. I think you&#x27;d be safe between 30-50k miles.

<title>[AWD] [V70] [2004] Transmission shifting -posted by- howardc64</title>
<description>This is the common 2-3 shift flare on this car. I have it on both of my 01 V70 and 01 XC70. Although my doesn&#x27;t climb as much as yours. Mine just holds there for a couple of seconds before engaging like a delayed engagement.

How do you know it is shifting from 2-3? Are you doing manual shifts yourself? The reason this question is important is because my flare is only evident when I do the manual shifts and going up hill. In auto mode, the shifts action between 2-3 are very gradual and this problem is undetectable.

Nothing I did could get rid of this on both of my cars :(

About the only cheap things you can try are

1. Make sure your fluid level is correct. Less than 1/2 quart down on my cars reveals all kinds of problems including slipping between 2-3. Checking the fluid level is more involved than just checking the ATF stick when parked + engine off. Follow the link below for info.

Actually, your car sounds like it is slipping because the RPM climbs rather than a delayed engagement.

2. B4 servo cover. You have an 04 so I&#x27;m guessing you have the newly designed less that is less failure prone.

3. Get the new transmission software. Volvo made a significant transmission software update in 2004 which changes how to the car shifts quite a bit (at least on my T5). Some earlier 04 cars seems to have the older software. This software ONLY changes the shifts in automatic mode.
