[RWD] [200] [1986] Check your Gnd to the Alt Housing......... -posted by- tlextoo

I notice that you have more than one posting regarding the infamous gray connector where the thin red wire comes from the alternator. The wires on the driver side are in good shape, on the passenger's side not so much. If I chose to wire around the connector, is it red to red, yellow to yellow etc? Also i think I read in one of your posts that you spliced into the red wire and ran it to the alternator. Did you splice into the passenger side or the driver's side? I tried splicing into the the red wore on the driver's side and no go.

Thanks

[RWD] [200] Alternator wiring/244 '86 -posted by- tlextoo

Alternator is not charging and the idiot lights are on...battery, brake, parking brake. Out of the harness, there is the fat red (hot) wire that I connected to B+, there is a small wire that likely at one time was wrapped but is now bare and frayed bare that I do not know if it goes with the fat red to the B+ or is a ground. Also there is a rather frayed wire that appears to have connected to the engine block...a sensor (?). The other fatter wire, separate from the others I have attached to the D+ terminal. Although the wiring diagram shows it as red, it is actually blue. I assume this is the wire that goes to the dash...idiot lights? Any help?

[RWD] [200] Brake/tail lights -posted by- tlextoo

This was from a previous post regarding the BF relay: "You can buy a new one (expensive, but sure to work) a used one (get a couple in case one of them is bad) or try to resolder your original one (see the 700/900 FAQ for information on resoldering relays)"

One might think if I cannot get the BF relay open to see what is going on, I certainly have no place trying to resolder but I am at least curious what is up inside. How DOES one get the little sob open, other than with a nutcracker of course?

[RWD] [200] Brake/tail lights -posted by- tlextoo

Nope....no brake lights and no tail lights...THIS WEEK. Would a short in the system blow the BF relay or is it likely a bad BF (bought it used on ebay)?

[RWD] [200] Brake/tail lights -posted by- tlextoo

I swear that I thought Lucas electronics (MG and Triumph) was the father of darkness, but there must have been a distant relative employed in Volvo lighting design. Last week, after I replaced the BF relay, all was copasetic. Now, the passenger side tail and brake lights are inoperative. When you say the white bulb 'socket' goes to the is right side....is that driver's side or passenger's side? I have current coming from the BF relay (red wire) to the driver side but none coming to the passenger side (brown wire). If there is a bad bulb on the passenger side....am I going to have power coming out of the BF relay?

[RWD] [200] 86 240 is dead.... -posted by- tlextoo

Oh, getting rid of the Volvo is not an option, it will be fixed unless it is out there cost-wise. I will investigate all these suggestions. Am I totally mistaken thinking that even if a battery is dead, it can be jumped, or the same thing with the alternator?

[RWD] [200] 86 240 is dead.... -posted by- tlextoo

Son was driving the 86 240 GL and says the radio quit, then the battery light, then the brake failure light, but it continued to run (I was thinking back to the 84 Honda I had where the timing belt went and lost all power immediately). When he turned it off at home, not a bit of power...was thinking alternator, but jumping it did absolutely nothing. Battery is not more than three years old and it hasn't been driven that much. One dead Volvo for sale. Anyone have any thoughts, at least ones that could be shared in church, baptist church?

[RWD] [200] [1986] Brake lights work when headlights off but not when on. -posted by- tlextoo

I have an 86 244 GL. THe beake lights work great when the headlights are off, but when the headlights are on, only the third brakelight illuminates. If you use a current tester, the light comes on when the brake pedal is depressed, regardless of whether the headlights are on or off. Any ideas?

[RWD] [200] [1986] A/C blows fuse -posted by- tlextoo

Found it - a little green wire that is rather worn, occasionally bumping against the metal part part of the compressor hose. For now, used a trusty twist-tie to hold it out of the way....

Thanks for the reply

[RWD] [200] [1986] A/C blows fuse -posted by- tlextoo

My second question about the electrical system so I am obviously challenged. Thanks for the advice on the headlight relay.....which worked. Summer approaches here in North Texas (also knows as hell-lite). Had the A/C system charged last year, now it seems the A/C continually blows the fuse, which I DO KNOW also includes power windows, hazard flasher, and maybe backup lights (fuzzy there). Any electrical geniuses that have advice on that one as to why it would keep blowing the fuse?

[RWD] [200] [1986] 240 lights -posted by- tlextoo

240 GL 1986 - the headlights and right left tail light illuminate in the 'park light' position but once switched to full headlight position - nothing illuminates. Have replaced the headlight switch without results. When you pull back on the dimmer, the lights come on. Any ideas?
