[RWD] [120-130] Has anyone put power steering on a 122 -posted by- Bilo

Gerry Lister Volvo Downunder is currently supplying and installing this unit for the Amazon and 1800 which makes the transplant from a 240 etc obsolete. From all reports by Gerry this unit works brilliantly and is a relatively easy install under the dash and does not intrude into the engine bay. I think the unit is produced in the Netherlands by EZPowersteering and sells for approx $4 - 5000 here in Oz.

Hope this helps providing you can find a distributor in the US.

Cheers

[RWD] [120-130] Volvo Picture 123gt info, anyone know more info? -posted by- Bilo

The GT mentioned on Ebay by Walrus3 only shows the GT tacho that can be classed as an original part. It has not retained any of the GT parts that make it a special collectors item ie GT steering wheel, fog/driving lights, 2nd bank of fuses in the engine bay, GT badges, no photos of Recaro seats. If this is a GT it is a shame that these parts have been discarded.

[RWD] [120-130] Seek info on fuseblocks on 123GTmodel. -posted by- Bilo

Hi Ron

What is your email so I can email 7 photos directly.
I have a RHD 67 GT in Oz - hope this does the trick in case you do not receive a LHD. The secondary fuse box is set up as it came from the factory - fog light
that can be toggled on with low and high beam and spot/search light that has a second toggle under dash that only works on high beam (both 7" Hellas).

Cheers

[RWD] [444-544] Is anyone able to register to use the Tradera (Swedish ebay) site? -posted by- Bilo

I am registered in Australia but used www.worldlingo.com extensively to translate
Swedish to English. I successfully bid for a few rare 123GT parts 12 months ago
and paid via Paypal. English is a second language in Sweden so you will find most will understand. Air express is quite expensive out of Sweden but this is a valuable resource for rare parts that I have not see on Ebay ie 123GT steering wheel, mercury engine light, spot/fog lights.

[RWD] [120-130] Interesting Magazine -posted by- Bilo

Hi Bob

I would be interested in reading the article which I assume includes the 123GT
however I have made enquiries and this mag is not available in Australia.
Would it be possible to scan the article and either place on Brickboard
or email to me at mapline1@optusnet.com.au.

[RWD] [120-130] Does anyone know how to hook up a 123GT tach in a 122 w/ B20? -posted by- Bilo

Sorry but these wires are the original colours from the 67 GT tacho and agree with the wiring diagram for the GT from the user manual.
There are several versions of tacho depending on year and whether they came out of
a genuine GT or were a tacho included as an option on the 122.
My tacho has RPM X 100,a red needle and rectangle shaped foot. 68 model changed to RPM X 1000 and a white needle. The optional tacho for 122 had a round foot as far as I am aware.
I think your tacho may have come from the optional version because of the wire colours. Yes disassemble but be very careful with the internal wiring as it is extremely delicate. Hope it all goes well.

www.classicvolvoshop.com used to have a photo of all the variations but I notice the website has just been updated so you may be able to find some helpful info there. I have not had a chance to check out the site myself yet.

Hi

I thought someone would have replied by now - have just checked my 67GT.

White - Coil
White - Distributer
Black - Earth on engine bay firewall
Red - Fuse box
Red - headlight/parker switch on dash

You may have to track the wiring for the small internal light bulb to light
switch so other red obviously goes to fuse box.

This only leaves 2 whites which you can alternate to get right.

My car goes nowhere without the tacho being correctly connected.

Cheers

[RWD] [120-130] Rear pop out window seals for 2-door 122's -posted by- Bilo

As far as I am aware as of 12 months ago these are not available from any supplier in Europe. The tooling required for the metal strengthening and extruding the rubber was an extremely expensive exercise. Until there is a large calling for this part it will remain out of production. I think the only way is to email the parts suppliers and enquire. The more interest expressed it may get them all working together on a favourable outcome. They will however be quite expensive when they come onto the market.

In the meantime what I have done is get hold of the least sun affected seals you can find, sand lightly with sandpaper to get rid of the dried cracked rubber and rub glycerol (natural liquid product available from drug store) into the rubber. It seemed to do the trick on my GT and came up like new.

If there are new parts available now I would certainly like to know.

Cheers

[RWD] [120-130] front seat questions -posted by- Bilo

The 123Gt has exactly the same seat support and foam etc as the 122 except the recaro relining option allows for full recline and has chrome adjustment fittings.
Headrests were not introduced as standard until 1969/70 in European/South African and othere selected export markets. You can however retrofit headrests from a 144/164 as the seats from 1966 on included the fitting tubes inside the backrest. This is exactly what I have done on my 67GT and resplaced the foam, strap supports and uphostery. These seats are now as comfortable as any new car. Lumbar support is ajustable via a small hole and using a screwdriver but from 68 was replaced by a knob adjustment. This does not however work that well as the perelli rubber eventually stretches and loses elasticity. The best thing you could do is track down a good set of 66 plus seats and replace the seat and back support bands for little cost. To go all the way can be quite an expesive exercise.

Cheers

[RWD] [120-130] 123GT Tachometer(s)- Fact or Fiction? -posted by- Bilo

I have a genuine 123GT delivered Dec 67 with original tacho.
It is the same as the one on the right

- RPM X 100
- 6500 to 7000 RPM red band
- red/orange needle
- silver matt finish ring (only plastic as mine has broken in 2)
- smooth black gloss casing (not textured)
- 5 wires

These specs were modified on later versions as already discussed.

[RWD] [120-130] 123GT with Ruddspeed Engine -posted by- Bilo

Thanks Derek - that info made very interesting reading and yes I do have the Amazon "Gold Portfolio" and a basic 123GT. As a previous poster mentioned
the car must have been pulled from Ebay for a offer too good to refuse. These would seldom come up for sale and as far as I am aware none exist in the 25 - 30 still left here in Australia. Obviuosly a few posters have never heard of the notoriety of the Ruddspeed mods and I find it inconceivable that a 131? is better than the 123GT Ruddspeed regardless of the tired but original look.

[RWD] [120-130] 123GT with Ruddspeed Engine -posted by- Bilo

Anyone that is into rare 122s/Amazons this one would have to rate top of the list. 123GTs are rare enough as it is but to have a dark blue one is extremely rare (only heard about one other Canadian version now in Sweden). GTs were mainly produced in white, red and dark green with a few later metallic blue versions for the Swiss market.
Add to that a Ruddspeed performance motor and that is unheard of. Unfortunately
the car for sale is in England where these examples still do not command the prices that they should for such rarities.

[RWD] [120-130] Have I gone Crazy? There was a 123GT on eBay last night -posted by- Bilo

This appears to be the real thing. The plate verifies this - 133351 LHD P is for 68 production. I own a RHD late 67 in Australai with only approx 30 left.
As stated you can easily change stearing wheel, tacho etc but the wiring loom and extra relays in the engine bay would be a little although not impossible to change. The fender mirrors appear to be original and near impossible to track down
now. Climate control switches have the flat look which changed in 68 but the window handle crank is still the older flat shape. The round crank style came in 69. As far as the head rests they were not compulsory until 1970 although the seat frames are set up to accept the headrests and are a great addition for safety and not all that difficult to modify. Not sure about the knee rests/side reflectors as they were only a requirement for US market but sure of the date. Check out the attached website for more details.

[RWD] [120-130] Tradera - Swedish ebay site - Anybody had luck registering and purchasing stuff? -posted by- Bilo

Hi Danny

I am in Aust, have been registered with Tradera for about 12 months and have only just made my first purchase. I have a 123GT and Tradera is probably the only source for the rarer parts. It is not without it's dramas though. I can't really remember the process I went through to register but I think I just winged it. At one stage they had an English help screen but that has been deleted. I do not understand the Swedish language so resort to Worldlingo to roughly translate the details of the item.
Most sellers only sell to the Nordic countries and do not accept overseas buyers but communicating with sellers is not a problem because English is a second language.
For the good rarer parts you will find they can be expensive as there is a real cult following of Amazons in Sweden.
All the best.

[RWD] [120-130] Quarter vent window rubbers -posted by- Bilo

I replaced mine, window channels, door seals and anything that was rubber with genuine repro parts about 12 months ago. The new quarter seals work well at highway driving speed but there is always going to be a bit of wind and water sneaking past the seals. I found the biggest problem was training the door seals to sit correctly and I could only achieve this with placing a piece of cloth in the door while closing the door, pulling out the cloth and leaving the door closed for for a week. I too have made several enquiries about the rear seals for the popout windows and they are a long way off - very difficult to mould as the previous member said because of the steel insert. What I did was treat the rubbers with gycerol (sugar based organ product) and smoothed the rubber with fine sandpaper. Came up like new.

[RWD] [120-130] Original Seat belt rewebbing? -posted by- Bilo

I think there was a roll of near original seat belt webbing on Ebay a few weeks ago. I have made enquiries about having mine redone in Aust but the thicker material as per the original is just not available as far as could find out. I was also told that because of strict safety regulations if seatbelt material is replaced and an accident occurs those involved in the replacement could be involved in legal implications if not qualified to do so. I think it can be done but only under strict guidelines.

[RWD] [120-130] Side mirrors stud version -posted by- Bilo

I am about to install rear side mirrors (stud/nut version) near the quarter vent windows. I am trying to keep the repro as close as possible to original as these types were available back in the late 60's early 70's - external screw-in versions came a little later. Has anyone installed these as I am concerned once I drill the holes I will not be able to get access for the nuts to be attached and tightened from the inside without having to strip out the window/ winding chains etc which is something I don't want to have to go through again. I heard that there is another fitting (rivet type) that doesn't require the nuts to be attached from inside. Has anyone knowledge of this method?

[RWD] [120-130] Done in by a deer -posted by- Bilo

Hi Joe

I am amazed that there was not more damage - must be that superb Swedish steel.
I remember about 30 years ago a mate of mine was driving a 61 122S in the middle of Australia and hit a large 7' kangaroo at 60 - 70mph. It caused similar damage to yours but bounced off the front and hit the side pillar and pasenger side part of the windscreen. He was towed to a garage and did a patchup job on the radiator
and panelbeating and kept on driving until he got back to Brisbane 1500kms later. He said if he had of been in any other car his wife who was in the pasenger seat at the time would have been seriously injured or dead.
Get that beast back on the road.

[RWD] [120-130] trunk light in a 123gt... -posted by- Bilo

Hi Chris

The trunk and engine lights are two items that I have only just located after searching for the past two years to replace lost ones on my 123GT. These were standard items and maybe a special order on 122s after '67. I have installed mine as best I could, in the locations where there were existing screw holes. These are mercury activated which automaticaaly turn on when the lid is raised - very ingenious, simple and cast brilliant light. There is no toggle switch or similar to operate. The two that I located were slightly different design and I'm not too sure if this was the case on all GTs.
As with all GT parts these parts are as rare as hens teeth so look after the ones that you have. I have posted photos in the image library for your reference.

Cheers
