[RWD] [900] Goodbye 3rd row seats (not an option for '07) -posted by- kingdom245

I don't think it is a liability issue. Otherwise why would MB still offer it on their wagons? I think it's a marketing ploy to get more buyers out there to buy the thirsty SUV the XC90. I mean if wagons still offered the the third row seats, then no one would really consider the XC90 other than it's AWD capabilities..oh wait that's not it...or it's off road prowess...oh wait it's not that either. So why else would we buy the XC90?

[RWD] [700] upcoming trip -posted by- kingdom245

Here is my itinerary when I drove down to Tx. from Philly.

First leg: Philly to Greensboro N.C 8hrs 473 miles

I95, avoid the beltway during rush hour at all costs. If you must take the beltway, think of driving past the DC beltway during non rush hours between 2-4 pm.

Once you get into VA remember to remove your Radar Detector from your windshield.
Hide it in the centre console if you wish to continue to use it.

After the last 100 miles, make a stop in Raleigh or maybe even Greensboro/Burlington. Avoid Durham at all costs.

Second leg: Greensboro/Burlington NC to Montgomery Alabama

In Greensboro NC, the road splits from 40/85 to just I40 and I85. There are a few places that can repair your beloved Volvo in NC. If you need help, just send me a e-mail and I 'll point you the right way. (Likewise in Austin also) From Greensboro to Atlanta will take you 5-6 hrs depending on traffic and how fast you go. Make sure your car can handle the 70mph speed limit down 85south en route to Georgia. After you get passed Atlanta, look for I65 and head for Alabama. Normally I stop in Montgomery, but if you must, Greenville Alabama along I65 is also a great place to stay. Motel rooms particularly the Hampton Inns are realtively cheap. Plus you can book their rooms along the way so you'll know where to get rest.

Third leg: Greenville/Montgomery Alabama to Houston/Austin

I highly recommend you stopping by Houston. It's just a fascinating city. And yes, you'll be exhausted by the time you get there. A lot of folks will stop by New Orleans for lunch, but I don't know what the conditions are like down there after Hurricane Katrina. From I65 you'll link to I10 right away. This will take you all the way past Houston should you choose not to stop there at all. I will then take TX-71 exit #695 on I10 and then take a straight shot up to TX. Please be very careful of speed traps on TX-71. This will take you all the way to downtown Austin.

If you need a mechanic for your Volvo, or looking for spare parts/wheels then Vol-Tech is the place to go. Their site is www.vol-tech.com

Have a safe journey.

[RWD] [200] 1000 miles away from home...overdrive giving out? -posted by- kingdom245

Rachel take it to Eurotech out in Greensboro. It's about another 40-50 miles, but it's well worth the try. Get back on to I40/I85, take the East Wendover exit, and head towards Spring Garden St. The place is called Eurotech. I hope you could look it up via 411 or through the phone book before you leave. He's a genius with Volvos, but I certainly hope Jim Christie is there as he is a weekend pilot. Good luck!

It's a stuck gear sensor. These things occur pretty frequently in the 93 850s but not so much in the 96. Have it replaced, shouldn't cost more than 200 at the Stealer.

yes it's important to have the timing "belt" changed. However you're running a non interference engine so it's not a big deal if they break. But it's nice to know that things are kept in tip top shape.

[RWD] What is the latest volvo wagon (RWD) with a manual transmission? Overseas? -posted by- kingdom245

NOt to kill your dreams my friend, but any EU car that is registered in Europe may very well fail emissions standards over on the other side of the pond. We had a fellow member over at Bimmerboard ship over a German Spec 740iL year 2000 and no one in the 50 states would register it because it did not comply with EPA regulations. There's a lot of redtape involved to get a Euro Spec car shipped over and its simply not worth the hassle. Have you considered looking for a 93 or newer 240 wagon or sedan with a straight drive in the US? I've seen quite a few in the south eastern part of the US that have no rust on them. Also some are quite common in the southwest region also. Check em out.

[BUYERS] opinions: 240 vs. 850? -posted by- kingdom245

I do agree that the 850 is a substantially nicer car to have. However, I had a 93 850 the black sheep of the bunch. I didn't really have much of a problem other than gaskets going bad on the sunroof and a missing body plug causing water to leak into the floorboards. Yes it handles much much better than the 240 which i went back to and sold just 16 months ago. I don't know whether to disagree or not with you because after reading this forum, I've heard a lot of bad "rap" with these cars. I'm even thinking about pursuing a V70, but after reading the negative responses over and over again, I've been backing away from it. I need some reinforcments from you guys before thinking about the purchase. Anyways, I'm glad to have this discussion and would love to hear more regarding this debate because I am too in the market. Thanks for all your words of recommendations.

[BUYERS] opinions: 240 vs. 850? -posted by- kingdom245

Hands down 240. Two reasons come to mind...the maintainence costs are way way lower, and problems are easier to detect. Also, IMHO, I believe that the red blocks are just far more robust. If you're not going for a turbo, I never would find much difference in terms of performance between the two. To me the 240 is just "tougher". That's what I look for in a Volvo wagon.

[RWD] [200] Best way to go uphill -posted by- kingdom245

Yup I turn the OD off. Otherwise it'll just keep kicking down every 15 or so seconds. I used to drive my 740 NA up the blue ridge mountains on I40 and it'll be a lot happier when I keep the OD off and in third gear. It doesn't hurt the fuel economy that much either.

[BUYERS] buy this '95 945T or just keep my '92 745T? -posted by- kingdom245

$6100 seems a little high for a car that has quite some mileage on it. I would look elsewhere or at least call the previous owner up first before even considering it. I've been down that road before with dealerships and I would normally prefer to get the car checked out and then haggle over the price. I'm almost certain you could get this very same car for $4,900-5,100. Otherwise it's overkill. Also, I would just keep the 740 as a spare running vehicle in case the 945T decides to run into problems. I've had mine, and up until last October, it passed away with a bad turbo and blown head gasket. These cars are not worth much, but yes they are very hard to find. See what you could do in terms of price and history first. My .02
