[AWD] [V70] [1999] Blower is intermittent - Progress, Klaus? -posted by- David in NC

I opened the cowl and gave the fan a nudge and it started turning. So, it's the blower motor right? I found several on line from $60 for an after market modle at Race Pages to $189 for an OEM at MyVolvoOnline. Recommendations?

I also removed the glove box and the kick panel so I ready to R&R the blower as soon as get one. (Isn't there supposed to be an air bag in there somewhere? I didn't see one.)

Thnaks again. David

I think I notice that the fan seems to speed up when braking to slow for a light. Does this indicate a resistor problem?

[AWD] [V70] [1999] Blower is intermittent -posted by- David in NC

The blower on my wife's '99 V70 is intermittent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I've searched and found some info on older 850s and the automatic AC systems, but I'm not sure they are the same as mine.

I don't drive the car much, but I think it either works correctly or doesn't work at all. When it works, the blower runs quietly.

When I switch to the 0 position, the AC goes off. When I turn it up to 1-2-3-4, the AC comes on, but not the fan, except sometimes. This seems like the switch is working even when the fan is not.

I have tried to spray contact cleaner into the fan speed switch, but I don't know if the spray actually gets through the dash cowl to the switch.

My wife wants to take it to the dealer and say "Fix it!" while I go apply for a third mortgage?

What next? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

[AWD] [V70] [1999] ABS codes -posted by- David in NC

My wife reported that the ABS light came on the other day on her '99 NA V70. There was no light when I checked it later nor since. I went by Advance, but their reader doesn't read ABS codes. What should I do? Wait for a constant light? Get a shop to look for codes? Thanks

[AWD] [V70] [1999] Where does this vacuum line go? -posted by- David in NC

Where does this vacuum line go? There are two vacuum lines coming off my air cleaner. Both are about 3/16". One is whitish and the other is black. The connector for the black one has crumbled so that the line fell away from the air box. The line is hard plastic about 12" long. I cant find where the line goes from the air box. Where should the other end of the line go? Thanks

Thanks. I did search but didn't find much. I guess I was looking for a little "been there, done that" insight from this board. I'll get a can of carb cleaner and start running down vacuum leaks. The car has 130k on it and is due for a few bad vacuum lines. Thanks again.

[RWD] P0506 CEL -posted by- David in NC

I got a P0506 Idle Air code on my wife's '99 NA V70 this morning. I had noticed a problem with the engine returning to idle when I let off the gas or braked to stop. It would drop down below 500 RPM and even stall sometimes. It seems to idle normally other times. What's my first step? TIA.

[AWD] V70 shudders and stalls -posted by- David in NC

With the AC on, when I let off the gas of my wife's '99 NA V70 and brake to a stop, the engine shudders and nearly stalls then returns to a normal idle. I think it is AC related. (I also think I need an engine mount.) I have tried different things to isolate the problem. Running down the road at 50 with the AC on, I have slipped into neutral and let off the gas and the revs drop under 500 and dies. If I do the same with no AC, it operates normally. I'm afraid my compressor is failing. I know I have a leak and must continually add r134. I wonder if an oil charge will help the compressor. What do you experts say? What should I check for? TIA

[AWD] [V70] [1999] Is this where I charge my A/C? -posted by- David in NC

Is there a recommended psi for low side pressure? I think I have a leaking evaporator, so I bought a manifold gauge set and a 30 lb. bottle of r134 and refill as needed. I figure that it'll take me 7-8 years to equal the price of the repair. What's the best operating pressure? TIA.

[AWD] Audi A6 or V70R? -posted by- David in NC

Klaus, unless your daughter is a better mechanic you are, I wouldn't even say Audi, much less buy one.

My nephew had an A4 1.8T and an extended warranty when the alternator went out. There are only 3 dealers in NC and only one alternator on the east coast. When he was told to bring in his car for the new alternator, it seems that the only one in the east was the wrong one. So the dealer sold him a new battery to get him back home, 90 miles away. What a crock! He finally got the right alternator on his second 180 mile trip to the dealer. Then he sold the A4.

Get her a V8 Explorer AWD They're cheaper, almost as reliable as a Volvo and able to haul anything. Parts are readily available and every mechanic in the US knows Fords. The V8s are real work horses and will outlast the V6s. :)

[AWD] Oxygen sensor DAQ (dumb ass question) -posted by- David in NC

How hard is it to change he upstream O2 sensor on my '99 NA V70? I'm no wrencher, but I'm not totally inept. Can I do this? What do I need?

The second part of this question is how hard is it to splice in one of those universal sensors? I have been advised that they are easy to screw up.

Thanks

[AWD] [V70] [1999] Fluids/confusion? -posted by- David in NC

I'm confused! (Again) I have a '99 NA V70 with the 4 speed auto trans with the D-3 selector. I lost my manual (It's around here somewhere.) but have an on line version. As follows, the on-line manual recommends Dexron III or Mercon for the trans and ATF for the power steering. This tells me I can get a good quality Dex III and top off or flush and fill both.

Manual
Automatic transmission fluid: ATF Dexron IIE/ III and Mercon
Power steering fluid: ATF

Yet I've seen posts here that say this incorrect. I've read that 3309 is the best for 4 or 5 speed auto, and synthetic fluid is necessary for the other. But they are not interchangeable. There's something about the friction and impact force or some such gibberish. So which is the correct fluid for my '99 4 speed auto?

And do I use the same in my power steering pump or do I get a good synthetic PS fluid.

Thanks.

[AWD] V70 CEL P0130 then P0135? -posted by- David in NC

[AWD] V70 CEL P0130 then P0135? -posted by- David in NC

A few weeks ago, the Check Engine Light in my wife's '99 NA V70 came on. The guy at AutoZone read a P0130 code and erased it. The CEL came back on the next day. This time I took the car to Advance and they read a P0135. Same bank, same sensor, but different symptoms. Does this sound correct? I am going to run some Sea Foam through and see if that helps. Any other suggestions? I've heard of owners replacing the 02 sensors only to have the same code return. I'd like to avoid that kind of problem. Please help. TIA.

[AWD] [V70] 3rd seat removal? -posted by- David in NC

How hard is it to remove the 3rd seat? I've had my '99 V70 for over 4 years and never had anyone in the 3rd seat. I understand that it's only suitable for kids anyway.
[AWD] CEL P0130 on my '99 V70? -posted by- David in NC

I got a Check Engine Light on my NA '99 V70 (125k miles)the other day. I had it read at AutoZone. The code was P0130, the front O2 sensor. I had a code about 6 months ago and cleared it. I think it was the same code. I cleared this one yesterday, but it came back today.

I've searched this code and found a few posts about people replacing the O2 sensor only to have the code return. It seems our cars sometimes throw false codes. Some owners have had to replace both sensors. And some others have had to use the Denso sensors. Ouch!

What's the latest advice on this code. Can I check the sensors? Are the Bosch OE and universals as good as the Densos? Do I have to go to the dealer for this fix? I'd sure hate to buy one or more sensors to have the code return. Any suggestions? All help is appreciated.

[AWD] V70 spark plug? -posted by- David in NC

I have a question about recommended spark plugs for my '99 NA V70. I lost my manual, but got an online version. Thanks, Jim Rothe.

The online version specifies Bosch FR7DC or Champion RC9YC plugs. I'm a little surprised. I thought the general wisdom here was to use nothing but Volvo plugs. Can anyone shed a little light here? Thanks.
