<title>[RWD] [700] I&#x27;ve had it! -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>WHen I first got my 88 760 out of the junk yard, I thought, &#x22;What a great car!&#x22;. It did not take long to find out why it had been junked at 143,000 miles with a perfect body and good rubber! That car now is the family workhorse and is reliable enough (with an engine replacement, new wiring harness, sunroof, headliner, ignition system, AC controls, etc.) to take on the occassional road trip. What I&#x27;ve learned from trying to keep my stable of Viking iron running is that these are cars built from out sourced parts that every other manufacturer used at the time. With the exception of the coach work and the red block, there is almost nothing else &#x22;Volvo&#x22; used in the Volvo car so our expectations should not be any higher for these than trying to keep a POS Buick running past ten years or so. (I have one of those too!)

What works for me is threatening my 760 with a glass of gas and a match every so often. I feel better and the car seems to respond!

<title>[RWD] [900] Regina fuel system -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>I decided to swap everything out of the 780 into the 940 since it all was working well when I shut it down. The in tank pump looks like the Regina pump from the 940 even to the size of the pump itself. None of my other units from 740s have the same look. The main pump should bolt right back up on the 940, but I haven&#x27;t gotten it in yet. I will have it fired up by tomorrow and give an update.

I like the idea of the big Bosch pump in line with the AC Delco in the tank. At least there is a chance of driving it home with an in tank failure.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1986] 245 running rough and stalling -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>I have had a couple of bad weeks with the cars. The 245 started running like crap a couple of weeks ago after a fill up at one of the local gas stations. I took a sample at the fuel rail and the gas was clean so I re-built the injectors which were in need of a little periodic maintenance, changed the fuel rail out to one off of one of my turbo blocks, changed the ECT, AMM, ECU, and fuel pump relay, to no avail. Thinking that the original main fuel pump might be going bad (even though I had good pressure at the rail), I swapped it out with a unit from an 88 740. When I broke the supply line to the pump, about 2 tablespoons of water came out of the line. I put a jar under the in-tank pump line and took several clear samples without any water. The engine immediately cleared up with the pump replacement, and, except for a couple of early morning hesitations, the car is back to running fine.

<title>[RWD] [900] Regina fuel system -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>I finally got around to pulling the fuel pump on the 93 940 so my new 16 year old could drive it to work. What a POS to work on! I was expecting a couple of skinned knuckles loosening the hose clamps and then sliding the pump assembly up and out of the little hole in the trunk like the 780 and 740s. This thing came up part way and stopped. I turned it, wiggled it, logged in over here to check the FAQs just in case there was something different, to no avail. I checked the crappy Haynes manual which is for the 740/760 cars, then went out and pulled the thing out in three pieces! I found the right way to get it out by re-assembling all of the broken plastic! :&#x3E;)

A couple of months ago I asked if anyone had changed one of these over to a two pump system and got a few positive responses, so that is what is going to happen to this one. I&#x27;ll post back when it is completed.

<title>[RWD] [700] LH2.2 Injector pulse rate at max throttle? -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>It is a pulsed output from the ECU breaking the injector ground, and hypothetically should correlate to the amount of air coming through the throttle body. There has to be a low (0 pulses) and a high limit(x pulses)designed into the injector operation. I need to know the high pulse limit for a computer control that I am putting together.

<title>[RWD] [700] Dumb, dumb, dumb -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>Every now and then I do some really dumb things but I have to confess to out doing myself in that department today. I had some wiring left on a project control panel that is going in the 88 765 so I tackled the completion this morning. The job went so smoothly that I decided to test my handy work, forgetting about the set of heavy duty jumper cables that I had left on top of the motor two days ago.

Fortunately, the cables only tore off one of the fan blades and busted the alternator belt when they wrapped around the crank pulley. The power steering belt did not break when it rolled off to the engine side of the pulley, but probably should be replaced anyway.

I can&#x27;t remember having this sort of thing happen twenty years ago, but I couldn&#x27;t remember the jumper cables either.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1992] Towing A Boat -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>I tow all of the time with my 86 245 and have for several years. My last boat weighed about 3x what your Jon boat weighs, and I did not have any problems with the load. I am thinking that the difference might be in the rear axle ratio, although I don&#x27;t now what yours is. My 88 765 with an 86 B230F does not have the same grunt that the 86 245 has even though they have identical motors. It is geared higher than the 245 which is the only difference as far as I can tell. You might check this by putting a smaller diameter tire on the rear and towing the same load.

<title>[RWD] [900] USING STOP LEAK FOR HEAD GASKET REPAIR IN A 940 -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>The problem with that stuff is that it stops up all of the small places that it comes through, and it makes the water look like milkshake. It would be better to pull the head and replace the gasket yourself (with the help of the 700/900 FAQs of course). It is not a difficult job except for the upper body workout trying to break the head bolts loose and will give you the satisfaction of knowing exactly what the condition of your engine is. If the leak is slight, you can probably get by for a while until it is more convenient to schedule a weekend down.

<title>[RWD] [700] [1986] What causes resistance to build slowly? -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>Have you pulled apart the electrical connector bodies and checked for corrosion and continuity? The older Volvo&#x27;s have some of the instrument and ignition grounds broken in the connector bodies. Also, you might want to buy a couple of cheap #6 battery leads from Walmart and make your own grounds from the frame to the engine and from the battery negative to the frame and see if that helps.

<title>[RWD] [900] [1993] Fuel pump swap? -posted by- Big Harry</title>

I just turned 61 a couple of days ago and have kind of lost my desire to crawl under anything but the covers. The trunk is not a concern if I mount the pump in a box and drain it externally. Besides, when was the last time you saw one of these units spring a leak, especially if the connections are in stainless tubing and the hoses are outside?

<title>[RWD] [900] [1993] Fuel pump swap? -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>Thanks Chris,

I probably will swap it back over to the 88 schematic. I&#x27;ve got all of the electrical for both cars and having the spares for the older cars will help get us through the depression. I&#x27;m looking at the same deal with the 780 once we put the new tank in the bottom of the trunk. The fuel pumps will be relocated to make room for the extra exhaust pipe under the driver&#x27;s side. I may as well practice on the 940. I&#x27;ve thought about placing the second pump in the trunk as well on this car to keep from having to crawl under it for a filter change.

<title>[RWD] [900] [1993] Fuel pump swap? -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>I&#x27;ve got a Regina system 93 940 with a failed intank pump. I&#x27;ve also got several other Bosch system vehicles with the dual fuel pump systems and plenty of spare pumps for those. Has anyone converted the Regina single pump system back to a two pump system? My reasoning is strictly economic; I don&#x27;t want to spend the $150+ on a new intank pump with all of the other parts that I have laying idle.

<title>[RWD] [700] [1988] increased mileage -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>That would be an impossibility, as you well know. My vehicle, an 88 765 that has not ever gotten more than 22 mpg in the 3 years that I have owned and most of the time around 20, is now getting 26mpg for the past 300 miles since the hydrogen generator was installed. I don&#x27;t particularly care if you want to explore that technology or if you are even capable of exploring it. I am and I did, to my benefit. Case closed!

<title>[RWD] [700] [1988] increased mileage -posted by- Big Harry</title>
<description>Hi Art,

I tried running in the manual mode last year when I first built the O2 sensor bypass.

http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1298019/740/760/780/o2_sensor_bypass_update.html&#x22;&#x3E;O2 sensor bypass update

&#x22;I have driven for 120 miles with the O2 sensor being used as a reporting instrument only. The voltage sent to the ECU manually is .61VDC max with the engine running under a very lean fuel/air mixture above that point. .42VDC drives it to the rich side with .55VDC giving me the same mileage as the O2 sensor in control. So it would appear that there would not be a large gain in fuel efficiency by playing with the ECU trim alone. For those that are experimenting with alternative fuels, it is important to hide the true air/fuel mix from the ECU, since the addition of hydrogen drives the O2 sensor into the high O2 range causing the ECU to richen the mix, effectively negating any advantage gained. LP Gas or propane drives the O2 sensor to report a very rich condition effectively shutting down the injectors. I will report on anything that may seem note worthy as the project rolls along.&#x22;

As I reported, the car got a mile less per gallon than when under ecu control. I have the gas entering the air intake hose just before the throttle plate from a 0 psi check valve.

I&#x27;m not certain why it is so hard to believe that an ignitible gas introduced into the air fuel stream would supplement the gasoline usage. The same thing could be done with LP or CNG and no one would raise an eyebrow. Anyway it not only works better than I had projected, I&#x27;ve got a request for two commercial units to be built for truck testing which will be delivered after the trip to the patent attorney next week.
