<title>[RWD] [200] [1984] It Is Possible to Repair by &#x26;quot;&#x27;&#x27;Welding&#x27;&#x27; -posted by- Tatra Mike</title>
<description>While I agree that blowing a hole in the lines due to a rebuild sounds funny...

My 1984 245 developed a leak because of a break in the lines where they&#x27;re calmped to the transmission. Removed the lines, cleaned and then carefully brazed the leak shut. The lines were wrapped with electrical tape where they pass under the clamp. Repair has been good for 14 years so far.

<title>[RWD] [200] My Experience with a California Salvage Vehicle Inspection -posted by- Tatra Mike</title>
<description>In January 2001, my 1985 245 &#x22;Cosmo&#x22; was rammed and totalled (according to the insurance company) in a parking lot by a gentleman who became a bit irate and exercised poor judgment. The back end finished up a bit wrinkled, but all doors worked and I drove Cosmo home. Not bad for a &#x22;totalled&#x22; car.

After the insurance company settled the claim, I had to have Cosmo re-titled as a salvage vehicle. One of the requirements involved going to a certified light and brake shop for an inspection. As I remember, they checked all lights except to glove box and dome lights.

I drove Cosmo for three more years until he retired because of an arthritic transmission.

If your 240 originally came with the third light, it will be required to be present and functional. They are not such a bad idea anyway and we have had them added to earlier models.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1988] Evaporative Emissions System Test Procedure Explained -posted by- Tatra Mike</title>
<description>The test is performed by removing the fuel cap, pinching off the evap hose at the charcoal canister and pressurizing the system with nitrogen gas. The system has to hold a specified pressure for a specific time period. If the filler neck is misshapen, the adapter will not seal to the neck.

The fuel cap is checked independently. A fault with either the neck or the cap results in a failure. Other failure points usually involve the connecting hoses running up to the front of the car.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1988] Repair in place - forget the wheel bearing grease idea! -posted by- Tatra Mike</title>
<description>Robert,

I strongly doubt a legitimate test station is going to past your 240 with wheel bearing grease on the cap/filler neck. Although there is a relativley new evaporative system test that spotted your problem, an out of round filler neck would have been a reason to fail in past years (maybe the tech didn&#x27;t look close enough).

I believe the primary cause for this condition is leaning on the pump nozzle when refilling. The filler neck is aluminum and easily deformed.

I&#x27;ve been flagged for this twice on different 240s in past years. Getting the neck out of the car without dropping the tank which requires disconnect of the fuel lines looked undoable/to much work for me.

You can repair in place, but you must keep in mind that the aluminum is soft and work little by little to bring it back to true roundness. One of the problems is that the opening is turned out over itself (picture an inverted &#x22;U&#x22;). Using a &#x22;huge pair of pliers&#x22; will result in disaster if you collapse the &#x22;U&#x22;.

I acheived success by making a couple of small curved sections of metal which I could temporaily place up in the void formed by the &#x22;U&#x22; to keep it from squashing when force was applied to round out the neck. Remember, lots of small tweaks with plenty of stops to assess whether progress in being made in the right direction. Be mindful of making gouges in the aluminum.

When finished I brightened the neck with a piece of scotchbrite. The tech who did the retest thought it was a new part!

Good Luck,

<title>[RWD] [200] [1987] Gas Tank Capacity is 60 Liters or 15.8 US Gallons -posted by- Tatra Mike</title>
<description>Please note, the following in no way should be construed as an advisement to run a 240 low on or empty of fuel.

The 1985 240 specifications (my favorite year) lists the fuel tank capacity as 60 liters or 15.8 US gallons.

My logbooks document more than a few instances over the years and across several 240s where I have refueled in the range of 15.2 to 15.7 gallons.

Unless there is widespread fuel pump fraud, it appears that the tank (maybe including a bit of he filler tube) hold 15+ gallons.

Your odometer is a much more accurate fuel guage.

Just my observation.

Touch a key to the body (ground), making sure your hand is on a metal part of the key (not the rubber Volvo key handle). When the current disapates this way you won&#x27;t feel it.</description>

<title>[RWD] [200] [1984] My Stories About Midas Service - Not as Bad as Some, But Still Irritating -posted by- Tatra Mike</title>
<description>Strike One:

Took a 1984 245 in for a catalytic converter back replacement. They welded the whole system together, cutting off the flange on the header pipe!!! I really enjoyed this years later when I had to drop the ENTIRE exhaust system from the header on back to replace a rear main seal. Thanks Midas. I really mean that.

Strike Two:

Took the same 245 in for an alignment later since one of their mufflers also needed replacement. They gave me a really nice prinout of the alignment specs afterwards. However, the values were out of spec (wrong camber). Gave me a real song and dance until they looked up the specs in their database. Fortunatley the database was correct. Got my money back, but didn&#x27;t have time to correct as daughter was driving back to college the next day out of state.

Strike Three:

Uh, fool me once and then fool me twice, you don&#x27;t get a strike three.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1991] Both of the Lines You Mention Can Be Replaced With Regular Fuel Hose -posted by- Tatra Mike</title>
<description>IF yours is the same size as 1984-84 models...I&#x27;ve used 7/16&#x22; ID regular fuel line (3 feet long) from the sender to the main pump. This line only operates under about 7 psi (pressure produced by the intank pump). A good auto supply store will have this size, Pepboys, etc. will not.

On my 240s the last portion of the return line was the hard plastic stuff, but was interrupted by a barbed brass fitting in the area aft of the main fuel pump. I replaced the section between the barbed fitting and the sender with regular fuel line as it operates under little or no pressure (free flowing back into the gas tank). It was a smaller ID, but unfortunately I do not remember the size.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1985] Here is the Answer - Part Number and Supply Sources -posted by- Tatra Mike</title>
<description>Volvo part number = 1304495

Autopartsworld.com part# = O5030-74643 price = $1.02 each

Local Volvo dealer had limited number in stock, price was $1.09 each.

Available elsewhere on the net for $1.45 - $2.00

--------

Since originally posting, I purchased a microfiche for 1985-88 240s off of Ebay for $10. No reader yet, so went to the library to view and confirmed the part number. I&#x27;m sure this info purchase will be a help in the future.

Decided to buy from Autopartsworld.com as:

1. No gas wasted driving to and from dealer.

2. Much less time.

3. No chance of the &#x22;dumb stare&#x22; from the parts counter guy.

3. They had the quanity needed.

4. No shipping cost for a order over $75 (easy to do replenishing the spares inventory).

5. No sales tax.

<title>[RWD] [200] Yep, Definitely! -posted by- Tatra Mike</title>
<description>Didn&#x27;t really start naming vehicles until I acquired the current wife (oops!, excuse me, that would be the LAST wife, I&#x27;ve been told). Our first and second 240s just happened to rank alphabetically when named and then it just became an obsession to find the most fitting name starting with the next letter.
