[AWD] [850] [1995] code 512 long term fuel trim to rich -posted by- rsjones

My 850 wagon is giving me this code. I have replaced the intake gasket throttle gasket clean the flame trap replaced all the vacumn connections.I have swap the AMM and this didn't help. When the car is dead cold it runs great but after it get hot the idle surge will start until it cuts off.I looked over the form for this code with no luck.I guess the next thing to replace is the ECT and the O2
this car has three computers to operate.Where do I need to look.

[RWD] [700] [1989] Knock sensor code 143 -posted by- rsjones

My 89/740 has the code of 143. I checked the posted message on this code and it said to change the electronic temp sensor. My question is this the ECT are the temp gage sensor.Has anyone else had this problem.I've check all the wires back to the computer and seems to check out good.I don't see how the ECT can cause a knock sensor code.

[AWD] [XC] [2004] Auto Trans V70 XC -posted by- rsjones

I own a 2004 V70XC. I have a question about the shifting of my auto transmission. When the temperature is really cold (below 29 degrees) the transmission shifts hard from first to second. Once the car has warmed up it works fine. Comments.

[AWD] [XC] Reliable AWD Volvo ? -posted by- rsjones

I am on my second XC; the first was a 1998 in all not a bad car. I currently own a 04’ XC and it’s a good car. I would not buy a XC unless you really need a car like this. There are a lot of little things you have to keep up with.

[AWD] [XC] [2004] Service transmission & radiator -posted by- rsjones

I know this question has been asked many times. Why is Volvo transmission fluid so expensive? In addition, is Volvo radiator fluid any better than the name brand fluids? How come in my manual (04’V70XC) there is no schedule maintenance for either the transmission or radiator? My car is about to turn 75000 miles and it runs great. So I want to move forward with the service of the transmission & radiator. Comments.

[AWD] [S80] Looking at purchasing an 01 S80. Are these worth considering? -posted by- rsjones

Thanks for the reply.

Actually, I'm on my second e30 at the moment, a mostly stock e30 325is...it's my 2nd e30, after my 86 325es (they look somewhat similar, but are totally different animals)

thanks for the info!

P.S. actually, a nice older bmw does sound rather appealing to tell you the truth...I may just have to check out the local classisfieds for a minty one.

happy motoring!

[AWD] [850] Several of us on this forum (myself included) have found, and reported, the cleaning properties to be astounding (and no exaggeration). N.M.I. -posted by- rsjones

What kind of syn oil are you running?

the PO of my 88 325is ran only M1 15w50 in summer, and 5w30 in winter. When I opened the valvecover to adjust the valves at 150kmiles, everything looked as though the engine had JUST been assembled a few weeks before (and the car was already 15 years old).

Personally I'm sold on M1 for keeping things clean...

what do you guys use?

[AWD] [XC] Used 1998 XC I want to buy................ -posted by- rsjones

My first Cross Country was a 98’, had some small problems with it but in all was a good car. I drove it 98,000 miles with no major repairs. It is my suggestion you get the repair history from the owner if possible. There were some corrections the dealership had to make to the car (recall). I now have a 04’ XC and really love this one. If you do not need a car like the XC you may want to look at a regular wagon. The XC requires a little more up keep than the standard Volvos.

[AWD] [S80] Looking at purchasing an 01 S80. Are these worth considering? -posted by- rsjones

After hearing horror stories of the 99's an 01's, I noticed a relatively cheap S80 listed locally where the owner wants a mere 7700 for a car with 170kms on it.

ShouldI proceed further? or shouldI keep shopping? I'm only 28 and my GF and I would really like volvo again (after bmw's etc.) but I still enjoy working on my own cars when I have the time. The S60's of this time period are still a little too pricy for my budget.

Thanks for the help!

[RWD] [700] [1992] 8 mph speedometer offset fixed -posted by- rsjones

Hi Bill,
some of the capacitors were obviously bad. There was black residue from the electrolyte on the circuit board around some of the capacitors which indicates a clear failure. The electrolyte seems to spill out from there the leads enter the case and there is some bulging of the bottom of the capacitors that failed. However, capacitors can also fail simply by drifting or internal shorts and these failures will often leave no visual clues. Most of the capacitors that I replaced looked perfectly fine but I am sure that they were drifting considering how widespread failures in the speedometers seem to be.

I took a look at the fuel gauges that I have lying around I see several electrolytic capacitors but I have no idea if these are a problem. The 1992 gauge has quantity 3 of 47 uf 10v 85 degree capacitors, one 22 uf 25v 85 degree and one 220 uf 10v 85 degree capacitor. There are also 2 0.1 uf metal film capacitors. There are no signs of failure of any of the parts, and this was a working gauge, but the capacitors are suspiciously similar to the ones that I took out of the speedometer and with a lower temperature rating. If I were to replace these capacitors I would use 25V or higher units with a 105 degree temperature rating to prevent drift and shorting.

[OPINIONS] And CEO's threatening to close factories if they have to follow a regulation is smart? -posted by- rsjones

True 'nuff. Had Carnegie seen fit to share his obscene profits, there would never been a need for the US's first union, the Steelworkers. Read about it, there is information everywhere: Carnegie formed a corporation to get rid of all that money, rather than pay proper wages, and institute worker protections. Nice guy...

I have proved to myself that proper management gets rid of the need for Unions, even though I agree with the union concept and requirement in today's labour field. I have always believed that there is NO SUCH THING as a "labour (or labor) dispute, and such conflict should be recognised as a Management Failure. My company was approached numerous times by unions, and each time they told us that there was no point in unionising the company, as we were already giving our employees more than any contract they had in mind. Never a problem with that company!
