[RWD] [200] [1978] Any interest in a slightly ragged '78 244? -posted by- MSW

Time to stop kidding myself, I can't take care of her the way she deserves. No showpiece, but would make a good daily-driver with new front wheel bearings & brake work (MC, I think). She's only got about 150K (approx, odo's busted of course); and the asking price would be 2-300.

Thanks,
Matt (in Maine)

[OPINIONS] So much for the 'War on Diaper Rash' -posted by- MSW

Certainly don't want to be flip, but I thought c.a. and snootful could use a smile...

CANBERRA, Australia - When police sniffer dogs couldn't trace drugs, the Australian state police force soon discovered the reason: the cocaine sample used to train them was talcum powder. Seven dogs that had worked on drug searches over the past three months will need to be retrained, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Paul Evans said Friday.

"I'm sure our dogs have got very soft, nice smelling noses at the moment, but they are in fact trained in detecting talcum powder so that means that they will have to be retrained in detecting cocaine," he told reporters.

"If there are any missing kids out there, we'd find them fairly quickly, I should think," he quipped.

Evans said police did not believe cocaine had been stolen and blamed an administrative error for the mix-up.

But internal investigations had been launched both within Victoria police and the Australian Federal Police which supplies illicit drug samples to the state force for training purposes.

The state opposition described the case as either corruption or incompetence and called for a public inquiry into the state force.

Like puns? It's OK, admit it...

Here are the 10 first place winners in the 2005 International Pun Contest

1. A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at him and says, "I'm sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed per passenger."

2. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says, "Dam!"

3. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

4. Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says "I've lost my electron." The other says "Are you sure?" The first replies "Yes, I'm positive."

5. Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root canal? His goal: transcend dental medication.

6. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off. "Because", he said, "I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer."

7. A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan." Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

8. These friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to "persuade" them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that only Hugh can prevent florist friars.

9. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him ... a super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

10. And finally, there was the person who sent ten different puns to friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.

[OPINIONS] WORST engines ever -posted by- MSW

I can only speak for myself, basing my opinion on 13 cars. Two Darts, no problem. Two Horizons, no problem. Two Volvo 240s, no problem. Two mid-'80s 3L GM FWD V6s... "Buick!" is now one of the most profane words I know.

[OPINIONS] Best engines ever- slant-6 trivia -posted by- MSW

Actually, a very small number (a few hundred) 170 & 225 slants were made of aluminum, 1960-early '62. With the special "Hyper Pak"- special cam, 30-inch(!) intake, 4-barrel etc., the HP was doubled. A real smallblock killer, popular for a while with racers. I guess the casting process proved problematic and expensive, however.

[OPINIONS] What is it about those Mopars -posted by- MSW

-that made them chew up starters in a matter of months? I've often wondered. Between my '70 and '73 Dart, I got so I could swap a starter in pit-stop time. Oh well- at least you can get at the damn things. Not like the GM FWD V6s, where the placement was apparently decided by elves with emotional problems.

[OPINIONS] Another vote for the slant-6 -posted by- MSW

Absolutely the best engine ever designed in America. My old man's Dodge van was recently retired with almost 600K; never opened. (She did get a bit tired after the first 450K, though.)

Strangely enough, the Valiant was originally designed around a rear-mounted slant-4.

I was pretty impressed with the straight-6 in my '81 Rustang, unfortunately the car itself succumbed after 6 months of "testing".

I'll probably get shouted down for this, but I'll also add the Mitsu-Mopar 2.2 4-banger to my list. Had an '89 Horizon, ripped a hole in the oilpan thanks to a frostheave. Made a panic run for home (30 rural back-road miles), she never made a sound, temp needle barely twitched. Checked the oil in the drive, she showed half a quart. JB Weld, and I drove the car for another year.

[RWD] [200] Bumper trim -posted by- MSW

Yes- fenders up to '85 will fit, but pulling a fender off a non-"commando" bumper 240 ('82?-'85) would require filling the holes for the above-the-bumper trim and relocating them (about an inch?); also there's an extra hole or two for the plastic bumper cover on the later cars. (I've got an '84 DL fender on my '78 DL.)

[RWD] [200] [1987] rocker panels -posted by- MSW

Well, is it just rust, or rust-through? As a fellow New Englander, I'm old hat at bondoing over rust, but it's a losing battle. A product called POR-15 has got a lot of good press here, but I've never used it personally. Some kind of rust-inhibiting fibreglass resin, I think. If it's surface rust, a selection of grinding wheels and sandpaper will work for awhile. If it's rust-through, surgery is called for- know anybody with a welder? Either way, of course, the New England Tinworm is a resilient creature- he'll be back.

[RWD] [200] PRV V6 and DeLoreans -posted by- MSW

I also read somewhere, although the details are foggy, that early Eagle Talons (?) and the corresponding Mitsubishis also used a 3.0 liter version of this same motor; dating from the time period when AMC was partially absorbed by Renault and subsequently taken over by Chrysler (which of course consisted mainly of long-in-the-tooth Volare derivatives and Mitsu-Mopar K- and L-cars at that time).

Yeah, right. Spent the entire day yesterday throwing twenty-pound shovelfuls over my head. (The banks over here are about 8 feet too, and I'm only 5'4"). Started to feel like Steve McQueen or somebody tunneling under the wall. "Put your backs into it men- we must confound Jerry at every turn!" The yard is a mirefest in the best times, this spring it'll be impossible.
[OPINIONS] Anybody know anything about Isuzu ? -posted by- MSW

"Isuzu had a great combo with the pup." -Except for the combo of sheetmetal & Maine winters. Friend of mine had a P'up (stupid name, BTW) in the late '80s. Mechanically it was OK, but after 3 years the bed fell off in brown, lacy chunks... We had the same problem with one of it's line-mates, a Chevy LUV. Coulda been worse, I guess- 'Yotas of that vintage seem to have a distressing habit of breaking in half!

[OPINIONS] Instant Gratification society? -posted by- MSW

Using the search functions to research a problem would take a good amount of time and effort (not to mention halfway-functional reading comprehension skills)... Posting a question, on the other hand, takes almost no effort.

Also, we are a gregarious society, I think, by nature... I'm certainly no brixpert (I've owned two 20 year old beaters I do the bare minimum to) but I've been lurking on the RWD forum for maybe 1 1/2 years now, and it occurs to me: For the most part, Volvos only have so many problems, it seems. Even the "cupholder controversy" has been run thoroughly into the ground, you know? If a "200 FAQ" was compiled, we wouldn't even have to talk to each other- but how much satisfaction would that give?

Or maybe I've just got amateur sociology coming out my ass?
