[AWD] [850] [1994] leaky injector? -posted by- guillermo

I have what I think is a (1)leaking injector. I first replaced all rubber seals thinking this was the problem but it continues to leak. What's odd is that it leaks for a very long time after parked which leads me to think that it might be an injector not "closing" and leaking fuel under pressure. Does this sound right?

Thanks ahead!

[RWD] [200] [1987] Timing Belt change - rope trick -posted by- guillermo

I just want to thank everyone for your support while changing the timing belt on my 240 for the first time, in particular for the "rope trick" suggestion, as you know I wasn't sure at first but with the help of your testimonials I went for it. When I tried it, it was the funniest thing I've seen happen while working on a car!

Thanks!

Could you tell me the overall length of your impact gun? I have acces to an electric impact gun I can borrow from a friend with good torque rating, if is the same length I'll know if it will work or not. Thanks!

[RWD] [200] [1987] using impact wrench to remove crankshaft pulley -posted by- guillermo

I'm in the middle of replacing the timing belt on my '87 240. The next step is to remove the crankshaft pulley. Although I've received great advice by everyone in my last posting I'm a bit concerned about using the "rope trick" (particles of rope left in the cylinder?) and the "starter trick" (there's a chance you may brake loose flywheel teeth having to replace it).

That only leaves using an impact wrench as my only choice. While studying this option I noticed the lack of room. Can anyone share how you've used an impact wrench in such tight space?

Thanks ahead!

The cam moves freely, its a "detoothed" belt, now I just have to decide if this is something I'm willing to tackle. Considering paying the local Volvo factory certified mechanic, waiting on estimate. Thanks for the tips everyone!

[RWD] [200] [1987] 87 240 stalled @ spd, wont start....not fuel inj. -posted by- guillermo

Using a wrench the cam turned fine, along with the intermediate shaft. I'm I looking at a timing belt replacement only? It seems the belt lost a few teeth causing timing to be off stalling the engine. Any advice on how to replace it, it would be a first for me.

The belt is not broken, just spinnning but only on the crankshaft sproket. The other sprockets wont turn.

I can see a number of teeth stripped off the belt.

I've had the car for 16k miles, belt looks a bit dry. I tried to rotate the cam by hand but did not have any luck....it seems strange the cam would seize, what would cause such? I know I had a very slow leak near the front cam seal by the water pump. Dont have a clue.

[RWD] [200] [1987] 87 240 stalled @ spd, wont start....not fuel inj. -posted by- guillermo

Ok...thought I had a simple issue with the fuel inj. (pump relay, etc......you know the drill). Not so, I have a timing belt issue, exept I'm not sure that's all it is. Here's what I can see:

1. Motor turns fine, meaning when I turn ignition on.

2. Took timing belt cover off and turn ignition, cam and intermediate shaft wont turn, crankshaft does.

Questions.

1. Is this just a "simple" timing belt/timing issue that can be fixed by replacing the belt and accesories?

2. Could this be a ceased oil pump that shaved teeth off belt when locked and sent engine out of timing?

3. I understand this engine (non-turbo) is a non-intereference engine, am I correct? I hope this engine is not shot.....car has only 115k miles.

Any help would GREATLY appreciated, it will help me decide if this is some thing I want to handle myself or not.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I was driving down the hwy. when my 240 stalled. I replaced the 25 amp relay a while back, could it be the fuel pump relay? I had an '88 that gave me the same problem and that's what it was, just want to make sure before I run out and get one. Any suggestions?

[RWD] [200] Serious knocking noise -posted by- guillermo

My '88 240 has a serious knocking coming from the head in the area closest to the firewall. I know these cars are notorious for sounding like diesels but this is beyond that. Could it be the lifters, a rod, loose valve? The car doesn't use oil or overheat. Could it be a knock sensor? Thanks in advance.

They are great machines, even greater for those of us that are mechanically inclined and can't afford new ones. Let's enjoy them and reserve our "deep" thinking for things more important.....like Da Bears!

[RWD] [200] [1988] 740 seatson my 240 -posted by- guillermo

I found an early 740 with a great set of front seats at a local yard. They want $50 ea. Has anyone done this swap that could give me a few tips? Even if I have to make a few mods, I think they would be worth the shot.
I also found a complete turbo car, about'84 4dr a bit rough, I was thinking about buying the whole car and swapping my non-turbo motor for it. Does anyone have any expierences doing this that might want to share with me.
Thanks!

[AWD] [850] [1994] Whistling noise -posted by- guillermo

Yesterday I stopped at a drive-thru and heard for the first time a whistling noise coming from the engine bay. First reaction was vacuum line, the car runs fine, noise varies with acceleration..from regular to high tone accordingly.

I checked under the hood to find that it comes from the belt drive area. Could this be the belt tentioner? The car runs fine, it's just noisy. Has anyone come across something similar to this? Thanks ahead of time!

[RWD] [200] [1988] My 240 sounds like a diesel -posted by- guillermo

Mainly when I first start the car it knocks pretty bad. My co-workers have asked me if I drive a diesel. I've read here that sometimes this can be caused by the piston "skirts" until they expand, or something like that.
Overall the noise tapers down some after warm up. I'm running 20w50 oil. Maybe oil pump is not working properly? I'm running 20w50 because of the age of the car.

Also does anyone know where I can purchase an aftermarket header? My header pipe has a crack and I thought I'ld upgrade when I replace the part.

Thanks!

I appreciate all suggestions but it seems to me that if I'm having issues with the injector remedies run a chance of coming back to hunt me, so at a cost I think it's best I replace it with a new one. I will for sure run cleaner thru the system in order to keep the others healthy. Thank you very much.
