[RWD] [444-544] Selling 63 PV -posted by- dencat

When i bought the PV in July of 2003 I had a lot of time to work on it and got involved with this forum for a couple of years. The list of improvements are all documented and are mostly mechanical with the exception of the replacement dash. I have not been on the brickboard for several months now and it has been at least a year from the last project on the PV. I keep it clean, maintained but drive it rarely. The time has come to let it go and I only hope it goes to someone who will care for it and continue to make it better than it is without loosing the car's unique identity.

My question to you all is, where are the best places to advertise the car? I will put it in the classifides here on the brickboard, put an add in the classifieds of IPD and probably eBay (but not overly excited about that)
Any other suggestions?

[RWD] [444-544] 544 tune up ----in need of distributor -posted by- dencat

I changed to a vacuum advance after a B20 was put in so I think I still have the mechanical advance distributor. It might be good to match the model numbers or at least identify what we have. If the parts are interchangable, I will bet there are a few folks here on the brickboard that will know.

[RWD] [444-544] my dad's lost 544 has been found -posted by- dencat

Good story. I also bought a blue 65, 544 in Rhode Island in 1967. The car was just like new and even had the protective coating in places under the hood. Your pictures are a nostalgic trip for me and it looks like you even have the polished aluminium (I think)slotted wheel trim covers. I would love to find a set of those today in good shape. I had a white 1960 three speed 544 up to then but the light blue 65 was the car I really loved.

[RWD] [444-544] The Psychology of Owning an Old PV -posted by- dencat

Belinda,
There seems to be a 3rd Category that has emerged and that is the group that has a connection to the PV from several years back. We are probably older than most folks on the brickboard and either have owned PV's for several years or like myself bought one again after many years.

Both longhorn and volvosteve said it really well. They just make you feel good working on them driving them, or just looking at them. I would bet that when these guys park their PV's in public they take a look back at it and smile a little.

[RWD] [444-544] 544 Wyoming Road trip intro -posted by- dencat

Abram,
It looks like you are bringing back memories for a few of us that are more vintage than our PV's. My first real road trip was in a 65, 544 and it started in western NY, went to Sarasota FL then west to Long Beach CA. This was in 1968 so the 544 was still new and so was I. I wish I has pictures of the trip. It was a lot of fun and cemented my life long love of the PV.
 Thanks for the flash back.

[RWD] [444-544] Another radio question -posted by- dencat

The PV I bought a few years back had the very same problem, a big ugly hole in the dash where a replacement radio was installed. The dash pad was also in bad shape. I was real luck to find someone with an unmolested dash and real good dash pad so I painted the replacement ad installed it. Then I found an original radio here on the brickboard. The dash looks great.
It might be worth hunting around for a replacement dash. They are not that bad to remove but somewhat time consuming. It is not one of those jobs most people will do very often to get efficient at.

Good luck with the project.

[RWD] [444-544] dashboard R&R -posted by- dencat

I did this about two years ago and as others have mentioned, no need to remove the windshield. I was replacing the old dash so it had to come out. With that done, it sure was easy to get the replacement dash sanded and painted to look like new outside the car. I can't imagine how it would look if I attempted to do it still attached. With the dash off, you can remove and clean up every little part that exists plus get to any other under the dash problems like wipers or heater valve a whole lot easier.
If you go this route, have a wiring diagram handy. I labled everything, or so I thought, and needed the wiring diagram anyway, to get everything connected again.
I had not done this before and it was a fun project that improved the car a lot, at least in my not so humble opinion. :)

[RWD] [444-544] With all the best of intentions... -posted by- dencat

The cross shaft can go only one way. There is a cotter pin at only one end plus the "arms" at each end are different, one has a bend and the other is straight.
I don't know if the clutch fork moved or not. Something made the overall linkage shorter, I expected a little adjustment after the slop was removed but not over 1/2 inch. Is there a way to check the clutch fork to see if it is on it's pivit point?

[RWD] [120-130] windshield leak -posted by- dencat

Someone already mentioned the wiper posts but if you have an antenna mounted near the corner of the windshield, check that also. I had this problem and just pouring a glass of water over the antenna base exposed the source of the leak. This is also a very easy fix.

[RWD] [444-544] With all the best of intentions... -posted by- dencat

I started off by just replacing the bushings on each end of the main shaft on the clutch linkage and should have stopped there but nooooo, I just had to go further. I noticed the wear at several of the connection points where cotter pins are used to connect the rods to the main shaft. Both the rods and the holes they go through were showing considerable wear. I would have left it alone but my neighbor stopped by about that time and offered to braze the wear spots for me. How could i pass up such an offer? He did a good job too.

I then went to install the linkage and to my surprise it didn't fit anymore. The rod that goes from the pedal to the main shaft was now about 1/2 to 5/8 in. too long and there was not enough adjustment in the adjustment push rod to make up that amount of difference. It looks like someone buggered up the push rod with weld and there are now less threads than originally. Fortunately, the neighbor was able to fabricate a new pedal to main shaft rod and it fit OK
after only a couple of adjustments. This also changed the overall linkage
enough so that the clutch engages much later than before and there is not much play at the top of the pedal. I don't know if the adjuster can compensate enough.

Has anyone ever experienced something similar?

That was one of the 1st things I did after buying the car, not that it isn't the problem again so thanks for the input. With some tips from the brickboard, I got through it just fine. I still have thepiece of 3/4" plywood with a hole in it to fit around the oil drain plug for jacking up the engine.

[RWD] [444-544] A new noise -posted by- dencat

I hope you are right. I hadn't thought of this because I replaced that bushing right after i bought the car. It hasn't been driven a lot to wear it out but there was a period when I was fighting a bad dieseling problem and it shook the hell out of all the mounts regularly.

[RWD] [444-544] A new noise -posted by- dencat

Bob,
I am afraid you will have to explain this a little more for me. I just tried to turn the drive shaft to see if there was any play somewhere and hear the same noise. I think it was in neutral. While I was undewr there, the fittings on the universal joints got a shot of greese, so I know it was in neutral.

[RWD] [444-544] A new noise -posted by- dencat

It has been a few weeks sinse driving the PV and I noticed a new noise. It is a clunking noise that seems to be comming from the drive shaft somewhere. I also feel it in the clutch pedal. It does this in 1st gear only and not all the time.
I had the rear end off the ground to see if the universal joints had play in them and they seem OK. A new clutch kit was installed about two years / 2000 miles max. ago along with a pilot bearing. The differential pinion seal was also replaced last year.

Any thoughts as to what this could be? How to verify?

It must have known I was thinking about selling it. :-)

[RWD] [444-544] OK you guys convinced me. It stays!! -posted by- dencat

Maybe I just needed a a little prompting to come to my senses and for that I am deeply appreciative. If I were to see someone drive it off, the memories of all the hours of work that has gone into it, disappointments, new things learned, feelings of accomplishment, brickboard help, and just giving it a coat of wax and admiring how good it looks would probably haunt me for quite a while.
I have started a second career, after retiring early about four years ago, and need our other car for work. The wife has been driving the PV for her daily chores and doesn't like driving it very much but the attention it gets doesn't seem to offend her.

Again, thanks for your warnings of remorse. Not I need to respond to a few emails asking for more info. I am sure they will understand.

Regards,

[RWD] [444-544] Time to sell the PV -posted by- dencat

Joe,
Thanks for the kind words. I didn't do anything to the body except keep it waxed, but did replace the bumpers and grill, also the complete dash. I am happy with how that turned out. The big improvement was putting in the B20, clutch, and later model manifolds. It really runs good. Hmmmm, I am getting second thoughts again. The wife has been telling me the same thing you said. (you will be sorry)

I sounds like you miss your PV.

[RWD] [444-544] Time to sell the PV -posted by- dencat

I have not posted much in the last several months and have not had the time to spend on the 63, 544. The time has come to put it up for sale so I thought I would let brickboarders know before it gets advertised on ebay or car trader, etc.
I am doing this with real mixed feelings but someone will get a really great car and it always is better if it goes to a dedicated Volvo owner. One can only hope.

If anyone is interested, please contact me through email. I have several pictures

[RWD] [444-544] S U Carb Problems. -posted by- dencat

I am no expert so there might be a flaw in this logic but it won't hurt to look for a vacuum leak. If the engine was running OK but very rich, all that extra fuel might have been needed to compensate for a vacuum leak and now that you have changed the mixture, it is starving for fuel because of the excess air being sucked into the engine. See if the idle gets better while you are spreying some carb cleaner around the throttle shafts or anywhere else air can be sucked into the engine.

I had similar problems and had the throttle shafts rebuilt and finally had to replace an old one piece intake/exhaust manifold before the problem went away.

[RWD] [444-544] PV's for sale -posted by- dencat

No need to apologize for Canadian humor, I find it pretty funny most of the time. I remember wiper blades that had concave metal facing forward to keep the blades on the glass but never fins. The thing that really makes the car go fast is the red paint. That's why Fire Engines were painted red.
