[RWD] [700] [1991] CR-814 equivalent -posted by- dm960

The factory sound in this 780 is not bad. There's 2 amps (F&R), EQ, CD connection for changer & stock with 6x9's for the rear. I'm pleased with how it sounds after replacing all the speakers which were shot. I wouldn't know how to go about wiring in an aftermarket to keep all the stock components working. Sounds better than any other Volvo I've owned. Someone at one time did have an aftermarket installed, but fortunately they didn't hack up the wiring. The harness is complete. Actually the radio is mostly working, only when on AM is where I'm having problems. Have cleaned switchs with electronic cleaner. Switch to AM just for traffic updates, weather. And 1/2 the lights are burn't out.

[RWD] [700] [1991] CR-814 equivalent -posted by- dm960

Is there another stock radio that I can use. Just want a plug & play to keep everything working. Goes in a 91 780 with amp, EQ, & plug for CD changer. Not having any luck finding a CR-814.

Thanks Dave

[RWD] [700] [1988] Driveshaft interchange -posted by- dm960

As long as both are the same length & the center bearing mounts in the same position, I don't see a problem with it. I just swapped driveshafts and they were from the same car, but different years. I had an 89 780 drive shaft to rebuild and put it in a 91. It was an identical replacement with only new components.

[RWD] [900] Cooling System Upgrade -posted by- dm960

That set-up is just plain goofy. I did have one blow back in my 240 days. Was always suspect after that. On a recent visit to the pull-a-part I grabbed what appears to be a near new, all metal radiator for the 780. No push plug action to worry about.

[RWD] [900] [1991] Wanted: CR-814 radio -posted by- dm960

Posted on the 700 section. Not getting any bites. Believe this radio was also in the 92-960. Seen it in a 92-940, but The CD changer cable may have been different. This is going into a 91-780 with EQ, amp & CD connections.

Thanks Dave

I think I've some pics of the one that was totled. You were lucky. Wife & I got rear-ended hard in an 84 242t. Totaled it out, but we're still here.

I plan on taking care of this one. Spent it's life in Chicago until this past June when I brought it to KY. Surprisingly little rust. The fender & door have some, but I have the correct color replacements. I do need a CR-814 radio.

Anyone need a driveshaft to rebuild? I picked one up over the summer to rebuild. Have just replaced U-joints & center bearing/support. $115 through EEuroparts. The coupe is up in the air waiting for me to install today. Will have the old one out & have it available. Shipping may cost a bit. It's for a turbo car.

[RWD] [700] [1991] Looking for a CR-814 -posted by- dm960

I'm over an hour to the closest pull a part, waiting on next trip. The radio's go quick. Everyone else is a rip off when it's for a brick. Our 92-960 did have a CR-814. Changed after that to the double DIN . For a '91 sound system, it's really not too bad stock. EQ,2-amps & 6x9's help.

Just trying to keep it easy so I can use stock wiring, amps & CD changer. Factory's good enough for now. Has worked great, but suddenly starting to fade & get static. Over 1/2 the bulbs burnt out. Think this unit was also in the 92-960.

[RWD] [900] [1993] Missing lights on instrment panel, alternator does not charge -posted by- dm960

Sounds like a connection problem. Maybe one of the connectors on the back of the inst. cluster. I know that on some older BMW's that if the bulb for battery/charging does not light, the alternator will not charge the battery. Actually part of the charging circuit. A burnt out or inop bulb cases a dead battery. I think I would try reseating the connectors on the inst. cluster.

[RWD] [900] [1995] 95-960 code 2-4-1 -posted by- dm960

[RWD] [900] [1995] 95-960 code 2-4-1 -posted by- dm960

There is not much info on this code for the 960. Indicates EGR system flow. Apparently The EGR was only used for a year or two on the 960. Has anyone dealt with this code on the 960?

Code just started coming up. Have checked vacuum lines and cleaned contacts. Getting to the EGR valve won't be easy, it's buried under the intake.

Thanks Dave

[RWD] [700] 780 Radio replacement -posted by- dm960

I take it that you have made sure you have 12V constant going to the radio. I'm fortunate that the entire system on my 91 is operational. Quite the set up for back then. Just added a CD changer, but I have a CR-814 with CD input. Don't know if that radio is wired the same as your TD-6146.

[RWD] [900] [1995] Cracked thermostat housing to block on a 960 -posted by- dm960

Want more love from your 960? Well break the housing & prepare yourself for hours of fun, well, almost. Needed to replace the thermostat on the 95-960 & my correct tool was nowhere to be found. Son had managed to hide it from me. Started by rounding out the soft metal torx bit bolt on the cover. I've done this job before on a couple 960's & had new replacement bolts on hand for re-install. In my attempt to loosen the bolt with a chisel the housing cracked.

3 bolts hold it to the block & the top 2 are easy to get to. The bottom one is not so visible. At 1st it looked like I was going to have to remove the PS pump, alt., & compressor just to get to the bracket that holds the 3 components to the engine. Do have to loosen & move the PS pump. The bracket would not allow my torx socket to reach the bolt. Fortunately a neighbor had a longer reach torx & I was able to remove the lower bolt without all the dis-assembly. A long reach torx (#40) is the 1st tip. The 2nd tip is that you can use the housing from an 850 if using used parts (or new), but the 850 cover is slightly different, has a nipple going to the coolant reservoir. I was unable to get to the bolt off on the lone 960 they had, & then pulled one from an 850, indentical part.

Posting this as a tip. Removing that accessory bracket would certainly have added quite a bit more time.

[RWD] [900] Back in a 960 -posted by- dm960

Ned, thanks for the reply. The interior is gray indeed. Exterior is blue. Apparently this was a southern car & maybe that had something to do with each door panel puckering on the top edge. I've done my best to glue them down, but it doesn't look all that great. Car appears rust free which is great, but there's some clear coat issues in a couple places. Still not that bad.

I'd be interested in discussing the panels further. Also need some other gray interior pieces. Needs a couple of the interior door latchs that seem have snapped the spring that hold them flush, the correct center arm rest, the rectangular screw cover right under the glove box. The dash shows wear from the heat/sun, passenger air bag is baked & the dash speaker covers are crumbling. That's just a start. It is daughters 1st car, but she'd still like it to look as good as possible.
