[RWD] [900] Turbine1 Signing off - Good Night, and Good Luck -posted by- Turbine1

Well, after 20 continuous years owning one or more RWD Volvos I suddenly have none. Went out at the weekend to browse some inexpensive new vehicles for my wife and unexpectedly ended up trading the 945 in and buying a new Scion Xb (sorry, I know its shocking). Reasons too complex/boring to get into but suffice to say it's the right vehicle for her for the next few years and unlikely to leave her stranded anyplace (unlike the beaters I drive)

I will keep an eye open for a good rust free 240 sedan to play with so I may be back in the Volvo game at some point, but for now I am done.

I want to take this opportunity to offer my great thanks to all the excellent people on the Brickboard who have helped me over the years. Too many to name, but you know who you are. This is a great community and I am going to miss being part of it. I hope I have been able to help one or two of you myself.

For now, Turbine1 Out...

Thanks Klaus. The electronics comment worries me a little. My 945 has been mechanically excellent, not one major issue. All the issues I have had have been electrical so multpiplying the electrical complexity by 3 or whatever does not thrill me.

[RWD] [900] O/T Looking for S80 buying advice -posted by- Turbine1

NA, Black exterior, camel color leather seats, 3rd seat, 6 disc CD changer.
Condition good for age. No rust, paint has plenty of minor blemishes but sound. Driver seat leather has a couple of small cracks. Everything works except for switches for rear power windows which I am replacing next week. Starts first time, shifts fine, drives great. Not certain about selling right now though, just pondering options.
Thx

[RWD] [900] O/T Looking for S80 buying advice -posted by- Turbine1

Yes, I have been driving RWD continuously for over 20 years. And I do a lot of my own maintenance, unless it gets heavy-duty or particialrly difficult, so a FWD vehicle would be a big change. No major problems with the 945, but a series of little nagging issues that I am losing patience with (latest one was wafts of smoke coming from gear-shifter a few days ago). Wife drives the 945 mostly and I really would like to have a car she can just drive every day and not worry about some odd glitch happening every couple of months. Grateful for the input though. Maybe I should hold off on the S80.
For the price I could get her a brand new Kia Sportage off the lot from the local dealer with 10 yr warrantee (I know, thats kinda sacrilege to say on the Brickboard).

[RWD] [900] O/T Looking for S80 buying advice -posted by- Turbine1

Posting in S80 forum, very little traffic there, no bites so am trying here.
Local used car lot has a 2005 S80 2.5T for sale ~60K miles. Am wondering if the time has come to trade in my 945 for a less elderly vehicle. I am not at all familiar with the newer FWD models.
If anyone some advice/experience to share regarding S80, things to look out for, etc. etc. would be interested.
Thanks!,

Kev

Long time (20 years) Volvo RWD driver. Not very familiar with the newer FWD models.
Local used car lot has a 2005 S80 T5 with 60k miles. Might be interested in trading in my 940.
Would welcome any general advice from S80 owners on whether this is a good model/year, what reliability experience you have had, what to look out for etc.
Thanks,

[RWD] [900] 1995 945 Smoking from Transmission Shifter -posted by- Turbine1

Sigh........
Very much appreciate the useful input.
But I have to say I am losing heart with the seeming continuous series of electrical problems with this car. Must have had 10 different issues in the past year.
- Flasher relay
- Lamp failure warning relay
- Climate Control "brain"
- Shift-lock switch
- Electric window switches
- and a few more I have forgotten for now....
I suppose I be will digging into this at the weekend (was looking forward to just drinking a few beers and eating some hotdogs and hamburgers).
Thanks guys,

[RWD] [900] Update - Mystery LOUD squeeling from engine. -posted by- Turbine1

I am going with the Harmonic Balancer theory for time being. Painted a continous white-out line across face of balancer and out to outer diameter a few days ago. The lines are still all lined up and the noise has not repeated itself. Will re-post when/if I get this figured out.

[RWD] [900] Mystery LOUD squeeling from engine? transmission? -posted by- Turbine1

Thanks for responses.
Mystery deepens. The loud alarming screetch has not repeated. But, under heavy acceleration it will make a not excessively loud metallic clattering sound for a few seconds, like a hamster-wheel in operation or a can-lid bouncing on something. Coincidence? or somehow related?
No visible sign of alternator being out of alignment nor distress on alternator belt. Will have to inspect balancer to see if it looks suspect..

[RWD] [900] Mystery LOUD squeeling from engine? transmission? -posted by- Turbine1

Spouse called me from parking lot half way home this afternoon while driving the brick. Car had started making an "alarming noise" so she pulled over. Drove out to meet her, restarted car. Transmission still in park. Horrendous squeely kind of noise from somewhere in front. Followed her home making a big spectacle of myself. Hard to say for sure, but transmission seemed to be shifting normally and don't think revs were exessively high for roadspeed (so, don't think it was slipping).
Parked in garage and popped hood. Seemed like noise was coming from front end, like a bad belt or pump. Shut her off, scratched my head. Restarted and....no noise, car behaving perfectly normally. Tried spraying water over the belts, AC compressor, alternator etc to see if I could get it to do anything. No "luck".
so, real puzzled as to what was going on.
Any ideas? Hard to troubleshoot when it won't do it again.
Warm, dry weather here. AC was on when it first happened, but I had it switched off as I drove home.

[TOOLBOX] 1980 240 dl mystery part -posted by- Turbine1

Not real familiar with the older 240s (had an 85 240 for many years, but the fuel control system was much different than the 1980). However, I have a 1981 Benz with similar Bosch CIS injection system so I can offer an educated guess. Sounds like the vacuum switchover valve that increases idle speed when A/C is on. Should have a vaccum hose from someplace on the inlet masnifold, and another vacuum hose to open/close an air bypass valve that admits extra air to the inlet bypassing the throttle valve.

[RWD] [900] [1995] Oil Trap Removal -posted by- Turbine1

It is actually fairly easy to remove the oil trap without removing the inlet manifold. There are instructions in the FAQ to help you do this. I have done it on both my 940 and my previous 740. Takes maybe an hour or so and another half hour to replace and re-assemble. And yes, indeed to have to remove the EGR to get to it. Kill two birds by taking the opportunity to clean the EGR while you are in there.
Good luck

[RWD] [900] So is my water pump seal about to blow again?!? -posted by- Turbine1

Sounds like it is in the process of blowing out. Not uncommon (I have had it happen more than once). Could be a poor quality seal was used, or whoever installed it could have damaged it during installation. Replacement seal costs ~2 or 3 bucks and its not too difficult to replace it yourself. If you don't feel up to doing it yourself a good service shop will probably charge you about an hours worth of labor to do it (maybe $60 to $100 depending on the shop?). Keep any eye on it and carry a couple of gallons of water with you in the car in the meantime. It could hold for a while, or it could let go unexpectedly.
Good luck,
Kev

[RWD] [900] [1994] shifter bulb and EGR valve -posted by- Turbine1

Good advice from Spook as usual. The EGR valve is right next to the oil breather box. In fact, the bracket that hold the EGR is bolted to the base of the oil breather box (underneath the intake manifold, roughly in line with cylinder #3). There is a write-up in the FAQ that tells you how to remove/replace it.
If you can locate the oil breather box (black plastic object on engine under the intake manifold, rubber hose coming out of top leading to the flametrap) you should be able to see a little metal valve (maybe 2 inches long) with a skinny vacuum hose connected to one end, and with a wire connected to the side, and connected to two pipes). If you are looking in the right area you can just about see it with a mechanics mirror on-a-stick and a flashlight.
Regards,
Kev

[RWD] [900] [1992] HELP EGR Valve -posted by- Turbine1

Did you notice the condition of the rubber "boot" at the end of the vacuum tube where it connects to the EGR valve?. It is hot down there and these boots tend to go soft and/or develop small tears over the years on older cars. I had this happen to me a few months ago on my 1995 940 (poor idle, check engine light with same 2-4-1 code from the OBD). If the boot is not tight, air will leak in and the EGR will not operate when it is supposed to. Replacement part cost about $3 from the dealer and fixed the problem for me.
Good luck,
Kev

[RWD] [900] [1994] Bad Water Pump Bad Symptoms? -posted by- Turbine1

There is a small "weep hole" on the underside of the pump body, about an inch or so inboard if the flange that the pulley mounts to. Its awkeard to see, but if you have one of those little inspection mirrors and a flashlight you will be able to see it. If the pump is leaking internally you will see signs of leaking coolant and dried residue (greenish crud of you are using Volvo Coolant) around this weep hole. You could also be leaking from the gasket at the base of the pump, the mushroom seal that sits between the top of the pump and the cylinder head, or the seal on the back side of the pump where the heater pipe connects. Look for same signs in these areas.
Hope this helps.

[RWD] [900] 1995 945 NA Radio Supression Relay - Where did they put it? -posted by- Turbine1

Dumb question: I can't find the radio supression relay in my 1995 945. Car has Bosch Ignition (if this makes a difference). I looked in both sides of the engine compartment in the areas mentioned in the FAQ. No luck. Then I looked everywhere else in the engine compt where a relay might be lurking. Still no luck. Can't see anything that even looks like a relay. Did they relocate it someplace else on the later models?
Any hints would be appreciated.

Thanks

[RWD] [900] [1997] Popping noise when breaking -posted by- Turbine1

I have a similar problem currently with my 1995 945. Popping sound from front right when braking or when when driving over a bump or turning a corner at low speed. Suggest you read the 700/900 FAQ section on front suspension, you will find several possible causes described there. In my case I suspect a bad ball-joint, although I know that my front shocks are also in need of replacement soon. In your case, its possibly just a coincidence that it started soon after you replaced your brakes.
Hope this is of some help.

[RWD] [900] [1995] Fuel Hose Damaged -posted by- Turbine1

Many thanks for the replies guys. Appreciate the very kind offer of a used hose, but I am now planning to buy a new hose assembly from Borton Volvo ($25 plus some change). In the meantime I am re-assured that somone else has had good experience with the hose clamp fix. The inner hose is scuffed at the extreme end by the banjo, so I am reluctant to just leave it as is permanently.
Thanks again,

[RWD] [900] [1995] Fuel Hose Damaged -posted by- Turbine1

I think I need to replace the fuel hose that connects from the filter to the fuel rail on the engine. Replaced fuel filter this weekend and found the hose has 1/2 inch split where it connects to the banjo fitting. Put a small hose clamp on it as a temporary fix but I am nervous about high pressure gasoline so I figure I should repair or replace the hose assembly.

Is this a dealer-only part or can it be repaired or replaced with after-market parts?

Any tips on how to disconnect at the engine-end? Is this a simple compression fitting or are there seals that need to be replaced also?

Nothing in the FAQ on this subject as far as I can see

Car is a 1995 945 NA.

Thanks

[RWD] [900] antifreeze loss -posted by- Turbine1

There are plenty of places where your coolant could be leaking real slow and not leaving much evidence. I assume you have checked all the hoses.
Try these:
- Weep hole on bottom of water pump (you will need an inspection mirror to see under here probably
- Heater valve
- Radiator (could be a very small leak - look for any area with a patch of whiteish/greenish crud dried onto the surface. Many of these volvo radiators have a plugged sensor port at the top above the transmission iol connection that can spring a slow leak).

I have been having the same problem for several months and have found small leaks in more than one spot. Seems like if you fix one leak, the coolant finds the next weekest spot.
You might also want to consider changing the expansion reservoir cap with a lower pressure setting.
Hope this helps,
