Any good experiences with the products out there for playing an Ipod through the car stereo system? I have an xc90 w/an in-dash cd changer and a v70 w/an in-dash cassette player and a 6 CD player in the back.

[AWD] [V70] [1998] Steering leaking; may need new rack... -posted by- kcookvt

My 98 v70 AWD (121K miles) has started a new leak that appears to be coming from the steering rack. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Should I just keep adding fluid to the reservoir and allow the leak to continue? Is the rack something that can be repaired, or will I have to replace it? Is it a do it yourself type job for someone who can do things like brakes and other relatively basic repairs?

[AWD] [V70] [2000] Subtle whine from ( I think ) transmission. -posted by- kcookvt

Actually, this might be the air pump. I had the same thing--a somewhat high-pitched whine that disappears after a minute or two?--happening in my 98 v70 awd (auto, not "R") a couple years ago, and I was worried about the tranny. It was suggested that it was the air pump. Since then, I've had the transmission checked out. All is well with it.

For what it's worth.

[AWD] [V70] [1998] Driver's side window stuck down -posted by- kcookvt

Thanks, Klaus.

It was a brand new switch; I installed it exactly 3 years ago (7/15/06), and I did not keep the old one (as I recall, I had the same problem with the other one).

I took the switch out of the door and worked, banged, etc., the switch (nothing fell out that I noticed)and then plugged it back in. I DO notice a noise, like the motor trying to work, when I push the button DOWN (as if to lower the window). It's just that nothing happens when I pull up.

(I don't wish to seem too ignorant, but what is the "pit"? Are you referring to the forum?

Thanks!

[AWD] [V70] [1998] Driver's side window stuck down -posted by- kcookvt

I rolled down my driver's side window today, and it won't go back up. It has been working fine, without glitches, since I installed a new master switch panel (in the driver's door). Other windows will work from that switch panel, just the driver's window will not. Any hints where to start?

[AWD] [XC90] [2004] Tire recommendations? -posted by- kcookvt

Looking to replace the Michelins (18" MXV4 I think) that came on the car (2004 XC90 2.5T awd). I run studded snows during our Vermont winter on their own rims. I'm looking for a good April-November tire that handles and rides well and is relatively inexpensive. Any suggestions? (Does anyone have experience running Coopers on this car?)

[AWD] [V70] [1998] AC recharge? -posted by- kcookvt

To my knowledge, the AC system on my '98 V70 AWD has never been recharged (119K miles). It works pretty well, but with things heating up, I am wondering if I can get it to work better--It does not cool things nearly as well as the system in my '04 XC90. I have and have used before a DIY AC recharge system, so I can easily go get a can of 134A, but I have never charged a working system before. Is it a bad idea? Should I release the pressure that is currently in the system before I recharge? Should I "top it off"? Should I just leave well enough alone?

[AWD] [V70] [1998] 120,000 mile service/Cam seal leak? -posted by- kcookvt

"I would first check the vacuum line that goes down to the air intake line just before the turbo. Look down, pull off the line and see if the PTC nipple is clogged."

How do I identify where the turbo is? There are a lot of hoses, etc., in a pretty tight space. I checked Bay 13 but could not find the info I would need to proceed.

Thanks again!

The fan was filthy. I did NOT manage to get the grill out of the dash, but I did pop out the switches nest to it (TRACS, two dummies, and rear defrost) and that helped with getting a light in there and gaining access.

[AWD] [V70] [1998] 120,000 mile service/Cam seal leak? -posted by- kcookvt

I seem to have misplaced the service book for my '98 V70 AWD. It's rolling up on 120,000 miles and I'd like to keep it going for the foreseeable future. What service items should I perform or have checked at this interval?

(I seem to remember the timing belt at 70K intervals instead of 60K, and I just changed the air and cabin filters).

Also, there is a small oil leak. My mechanic took a quick look and said it looks like a cam seal leak. Is this something I can let go until I have the timing belt replaced, so long as I check the oil regularly, or is that an ill-advised strategy?

Thanks

[AWD] [V70] [1998] Electronic Climate Control system fault -posted by- kcookvt

Klaus,

Is there a trick to getting the temp sensor out? I tried vacuuming and I thought it had worked, but the little lights started flashing again the third time I started the car. I was able to remove the radio and the ECC unit (thanks for the pointers), but I cannot seem to figure out the sensor. You mentioned plastic tabs at 12 and 6 on the grill end, but I cannot seem to feel them. Are they tiny little things, or should I be able to find them pretty easily. Thanks again.

[AWD] [XC90] [2004] Fuel vapors in passenger compartment -posted by- kcookvt

I just noticed this happening two days ago in my XC90. Coincidentally, I had just the previous day been on Brickboard for another reason, and as soon as I smelled the gas, I remembered having seen this post. Now that I check it, I learn not to top off, which I always do--or used to do :). And now that I've broken my bad habit, I'll know where to look for the leak if the smell continues.

Thanks for the good information, all!

[AWD] [XC90] Looking into buying 2004 XC90 2.5T -posted by- kcookvt

We have an '04 very similar to yours. We bought it with about 55K miles and have put on about 20K in 15 months. We have had no problems EXCEPT we have had to replace wheel bearings. I do not remember whether it was front or rear (we had to replace them on our other Volvo too at the same time, and I forget which was which). Apparently that is an issue for these cars. Also, it is heavy and goes through tires pretty quickly.

On the other hand, we've taken a few long trips (VT to DC, for example) and the 2.5T was great and got about 22.5 mpg with 4 people and gear at highway (or above highway) speeds. I like the car. I read a lot of warnings about things like the transmission and AWD system and decided that, because we got a good price, we'd risk the cost of the repair if necessary later. Hasn't been necessary.

As for the longevity you're seeking, I haven't hear of any going that long, but they haven't been around too long, either. I'd bet there are some higher mileage stories out there.

It is a stable and comfortable car and it's safe. It hauls family, dog, and luggage comfortably, the stereo is great, as is the climate control system. For some reason, the seats bothered my rear end on long drives for about two months. After that, it seemed, either the seats got used to me or I got used to them.

Good luck.

[AWD] [V70] [1998] Electronic Climate Control system fault -posted by- kcookvt

The amber lights on the Recirc ON and AC off switches flash for about 20 seconds when I start the car (1998 V70 AWD 118,000 miles). My owner's manual says that indicates a fault in the ECC system and that I should take it to an authorized Volvo dealership for service. That, of course, costs a lot of money.

I'm wondering whether there might be something I can do to troubleshoot the system. For example, I could, myself, recharge the AC with R-134a (or whatever), but I don't want to do that if it is obviously not a part of the problem. Any suggestions are, as always, appreciated. Thanks

[AWD] Use of oil additives? -posted by- kcookvt

I had heard a while back that as cars get older some of these products might help condition the cylinders, etc. I had heard especially good things about the Lucas products and used it in my old 740T wagon. I couldn't tell if it helped, and it didn't seem to hurt; the car ran well until I totaled it.

Wow. After being duly intimidated by the info on Matthew's Volvo Site, I'm deciding that this is beyond my skill level. Do I risk engine damage even if I am careful to use good gas, continue to keep up with regular maintenance, etc?
