[RWD] [444-544] SU H4 carb set up issue???? 1958 Duett B16 -posted by- chiefeagle

I thought it was odd also. PO probably put the electric one in when the old mechanical one ended up failing.

I hope it's something simple.

[RWD] [444-544] SU H4 carb set up issue???? 1958 Duett B16 -posted by- chiefeagle

Yes, he is fairly close as a crow flys, but it's another country and I don't have a passport or an enhanced driver's license. It's also a a ferry ride across the water for me.
I have not bothered Joe Curto about it. I guess I should ask him. My carbs went to my mechanic first and sat there forever before he decided he could not do it and I suggested Joe Curto, which is what I should have done in the first place. He then sent them off and there was a discount because they were sent to Curto from a shop and not a private person.

Yes, they are different. I have the H4's. Before this whole process about a year ago, I did think they were the same, but now I know.

I checked and there is fuel in the float bowl. I have confirmed good fuel flow up to the carbs.

I tried to start it again today and it did the same thing and acted like it has no fuel. I gave up because I don't want to burn up my starter and I'm not going anywhere in it anyhow. I just want the thing to work.

Just out of curiosity; why would having the two pumps at the same time hurt anything? or why would just disconnecting the electric one be a problem?
I'm seriously asking and not trying to be a jerk.

When I was initially putting this motor together...I was going to block off the hole for the mechanical pump with a flat piece of metal and just run the electric one.

Thanks.

Yes, those old old Triumphs and MG's run the same carbs.
I'm an hour north of Seattle. I'll have to see who's around here. Usually nobody.

I agree. It doesn't seem like it should be a carb problem, but I've checked the fuel line into the carbs prior to start up and there is fuel in it.

I'm not sure why the electric pump was installed, but I just have to pull a wire at the fuse block to shut it off. It's a small square pump so I would think it is probably pretty low pressure. And the car has sat for a while several times, and the glass bowl on the mechanical pump is always full of fuel.

I'll try the lever on the mechanical pump tomorrow. I was going to earlier today, but it started to rain and I was getting annoyed. Maybe the car is just mad because it lost its parking spot in the garage.

Hey OK,
There's the stock mechanical one on the block and there is a small electric in-line pump under the car. The stock one was taken off of a working motor and the electric one was there when I got the Duett.
I checked a while back and today to make sure it wasn't draining back toward the tank and there was plenty of fuel in the line where I disconnected it at the front carb. That's what you mean, right? (Sprayed all over my hand, which was a bonus.)

Yes, I've got the choke cable set up correctly and it moves both in sync with each other.

I think the mechanic usually deals with the su's that are on the B18. HS6?

I wish I could go back in time and just put a b18 in this car.

[RWD] [444-544] SU H4 carb set up issue???? 1958 Duett B16 -posted by- chiefeagle

Hello all,
I'm having an issue with my carbs I believe. Fuel delivery up to the carbs is not an issue and neither is spark or timing. There is plenty of fuel in the line all the way up to the carbs and it is under pressure, but it seems like there is a gate keeper and he won't let the fuel live in the carbs. Car starts right up no problem when I spray in some starting fluid.
Carbs were freshly rebuilt by Joe Curto and the initial set up was done by a Volvo mechanic, but I think he might have been in uncharted territory with the old H4's. ??
When I go to start the car cold, it always acts like it's the first time it has ever been started in it's whole life. Like there is a lack of fuel on standby in the bowls. It will not start AT ALL (period) with the choke. Acts like it gets literally zero fuel. I have to start it with the choke off and crank it several times. Eventually, it will start to sputter and When it does start, it acts like it is starved for fuel for about a minute and then it runs Great with good throttle response. Hot starts are NO problem at all.

Can this be an issue with the float height? I don't even know what I'm talking about.

Any suggestions on what to do would be fantastic.

Thanks for your help.

I'm trying to find a surfboard for the rack, but I keep missing out on the cheap ones.
Brake lights are working fine for now, but I'll keep an eye on them. Switch could go at any time I'm sure.

Thanks.
I agree about the paint. It has the look I like, which is hard to find these days. I felt bad even polishing it, but it looks better and bluer with a little bit of shine. I sometimes like the oxidized look, but it wasn't looking right with some of the parts shiny. I didn't go over board though and just used very little arm power and some cleaner wax.
I just left the plates on and I keep my Washington horseless carriage plate with me in case I get stopped.

Thanks for the pics John. Looks like a nice one and will be really nice when you are done. Even has the old green Washington plate.
There's a nice red and white one somewhere up here in Mount Vernon. I've seen it a couple times on I-5 over the last five years or so. A friend tells me he sees a rough red one in Marysville sometimes. I know there's more than a few in this state, but I think they hide out most of the year.
