[AWD] Which one to get???? -posted by- AlanS

It's time to move on from our 1995 850. We have $20,000. Is Volvo the way to go? What model/ year would we reasonably get? Not a wagon. OR...is it true what is said about Japanese cars (Reliable, less thirsty)?
Input please.
The wife certainly wants a Volvo (in that we have owned a 142, P1800, 240 wagon, 740 wagon, 760 sedan, 850, S40 over our 30 years together. It's just that the 'newer' Volvos don't seem to be like the 'older' guys.

[AWD] [850] How do I use a multi meter to check a sensor? ECT -posted by- AlanS

OK...so here's what I did:
Engine cold...85 degrees out all day. The meter set at 2000, the reading was 1740, at 20K 1.75....I let it heat up to operating temp (via the interior gauge): at 2000= 225, at 20K .25 This kinda corresponds to your chart, but not exactly. It did go down!
So, if it's not the sensor, then I guess it's the leads going to the sensor...those barrel connections that I can't get inside of to clean. I used a very small jewlers file to try to rough up the inside of the barrel, but the Code still comes up.
Any ideas?

[AWD] [850] How do I use a multi meter to check a sensor? ECT -posted by- AlanS

My ECT sensor ( the gizmo under the thermostat) is possibly not working on my 95- 850. The codes read that it is faulty. It is relatively new. In order to get an exchange, I need to PROVE it's bad. I don't want to be embarrassed, so I picked up a multi-meter.
OK...I got a Multimeter. I am electronically ignorant...a moron! The Ohms section has 5 choices: 2000K, 200k, 20k,2000, 200. What do I set it on for testing the ECT sensor? What am looking for? A simple explanation would be helpful...make believe you are talking to a 5 year old...an not a bright one!!!

[AWD] [850] Steering U-joint! How do I remove it???? HELP! -posted by- AlanS

So Ken, How does this 'joint' connect at the top? Let's assume the bottom is where the bolt and split are, what is the deal at the top? How does it disconnect? Will just getting it 'up' from the steering rack free it? Can it move 'up' ? Or do I need to take out the steering column from the inside of the car? Is it solidily connected between the splined shaft from the rack to whatever it is connected to at top? Is there play once I move it on the splined shaft?

[AWD] [V70] $12,000...what to do? -posted by- AlanS

My family (wife, son, etc.) have several Volvos, but I drive a 1989 Mercedes wagon (300te). It has reached a point that I do not want to put any more money into it. I have $12,000 to buy a car. I need a wagon. I want reliable, comfortable and a tad of luxury. I could put that into a 2000 E320 Mercedes (with about 125,000 miles- that's kinda the going price and milage)...OR what is GREAT in the Volvo line?
I must say that I have an S40 for my son, and I find it kinda 'cheap' inside. It does not insulate sound very well and the finishing touches are all hard plastic. This is what I want to avoid. Could go Japanese, but am concerned about longevity.

[AWD] [S40-V40] S40 timing belt stuff question...the seals! -posted by- AlanS

So I ordered the 'kit' for my son's 2001 S40- Timing components and water pump. I did not realize that there are a bunch of seals that came with the kit (probably could have paid less if I did not order 'the kit'). Anyway. I was all geared up to do the belt/ tensioner, pump, etc....BUT now I have to deal with these seals. I haven't a clue how to remove pulleys, etc. to get to these seals...and THEN, how to remove and replace. Any guides, clues? otherwise I will just leave them if they are not leaking.

[AWD] [S40-V40] I can't get the horn fixed- 2001 S40 -posted by- AlanS

2001 s40
For the life of me, I cannot remove the two bolts holding the horn pad on...They are in back of the steering wheel. The manual says T30...I have tried everything...smaller, square drive, etc. By now, I have probably done damage to the insert.
Problem is, you really can't see the bolt head through the back of the steerer.
Anyone? Please?

[AWD] [850] [1995] Steering Pump or rack??? -posted by- AlanS

We have decided to keep our 1995 NON-turbo 850...So, I will need some help in the repairs.
Firstly: How do I determine if the steering pump is bad? The steering on cold days is extremely difficult until things warm up...I opened the fluid camber cap and observed the fluid while the engine was running...I did NOT see it move. While the engine was running, the wife moved the steering wheel back and forth...wow, what that noisy at the ends of the motion (far left/far right)....
I am not losing any fluid...
More questions to follow....

[AWD] [850] What would you do? -posted by- AlanS

1995 850 non-turbo wagon...160,000 miles, loses practically no oil, no rust.
What it does need is: Steering rack, exhaust manifold...some minor body work.
We have owned this car since new... I don't know when to 'pack it in'. How long do these engines/ gearboxes last? I have no idea of the cost to fix the manifold or steering rack (we use an independent shop, but he says that he doesn't know until it's apart)...
What would you do? $25,000+ for a newish car or fix the old one....

[AWD] [850] [1995] New noises...help! 1995 850 -posted by- AlanS

1995 850 wagon- non-turbo:
40mph and over there is a new noise, sounds like it is behind the instrument cluster. Sounds like bees or locusts (trying to give you an idea). Not a squeak...buzzing.
If it were my old cars, I would say that the speedometer cable was acting up.
I haven't a clue where to start.
I did do this: Over 40-mph, I shut off the engine, let the rpms drop...same sound. Thus it isn't in the engine / radio/ electrical...It must be mechanical.
And it really sounds like it is behind the gauges. LOUD!

[AWD] [850] Heater Core 1995-850 -posted by- AlanS

1995- 850 wagon- non-turbo.
OK...the car smells like anti-freeze, but there is NO fluid under the mats...I think that it is weeping from the core and not enough to 'flood' (I think...I know nothing). I cannot find any leaks under the hood...
Put the heat on, even slightly, and you are blown away by the smell.
What else should I check?
Now, let's assume that I need a core. I will NOT be doing this myself...no time...getting too cold outside.
I have a small shop in town (no dealers around) that is an expert Mercedes shop...he is willing to do the job.
What info can I provide to help with a fool-proof job (ie: I don't want the dash to creak / squeek afterwards...are there any 'extra' parts that need replacing while doing this job? Things that only soomeone who has done this realizes should have been replaced)...
I will have him also do the A/C evaporator.

[AWD] [850] [1995] Heater Core 1995-850 -posted by- AlanS

Here's the scoop...put on the heat...smell anti-freeze out of the vents. pulled up the carpet and took a nice look behind the console. There is a white box which, I guess, contains the heater core...allowing the air to flow around it and then out the plastic 'tubes' that exit the white box...am I in the 'ballpark'? I can feel the hoses that are the inlet and outlet for the anti-freeze...but the floor is dry...bone dry. Since this box is white, I see that it is discolored from the inside...green (as in anti-freeze green). Could this white box be filled with anti-freeze and the air is circulating around it...it is just so sealed that it isn't leaking?
I can't imagine getting this white box out of there...Although my manual says that it is 'do-able"...
So, the question really is...if I am smelling anti-freeze...is the core leaking, even though the floor is dry? Any step by step instructions (on -line ) for the 1995 850 (non-turbo)?

Well, I went in to take a look. Surprised what I found. There is a white plastic square unit...two small hoses coming in at the rear bottom...large (what seems like vents) coming out of the unit. Is the heater core in this thing? Wow...how the heck do I get it out of there? The carpet/ floor was not wet at all. Could water be 'hiding' inside the white plasttic thing?
