HELLLLLP Volvo gurus!! -posted by- Diesel Dead in Denver OK Volvo geniuses, I think I've got a challenge for you. I have a 1984 Volvo 244 DIESEL (very rare as you know!) that was in great shape when I bought it 2 years ago, only has 90,000 miles on it. %0D%0A%0D%0AI love this car... but about a year ago it began to act like it was running out of gas at odd times, especially when it was cold. This began to get worse with time. Soon after that I began to smell gas fumes that intensified when the "running out of gas" symptom occurred (was NOT even close to being out of gas, by the way). It runs much better on a completely full tank of gas. I've changed the fuel filter and replaced most of the gas lines... to no avail. %0D%0A%0D%0AIt appears to be leaking just left of the fuel filter (passenger side) of the engine, underneath in that general area, the exact position of the leak is hard to determine. (That's where the fuel/injector pump is, right? Just found that out in Chiltons) I haven't driven it in months because I'm getting sick off the fumes. Diesel mechanics here in Denver are scared of this car. %0D%0A%0D%0A(In the picture you can see that the fuel leaks onto the rear timing belt and that spray it all over... it's worse when driving on the highway.)%0D%0A%0D%0AI would love to have this Volvo back, any ideas Volvo experts???%0D%0A%0D%0AMIke http://www.brickboard.com/STORIES/volvo/1384664/helllllp_volvo_gurus.html?rss=1 Sat, 7 Nov 2009 14:28 GMT HELLLLLP Volvo gurus!! -posted by- KlausC There is a drop down menu at the top right of the screen, or select one of the topics on the right hand side.%0D%0A%0D%0ADiesel = FUEL. When he purchased the car new in 1965, he removed the rubber to oil the screws and noticed that someone from the factory had written "Britta" in glue, on the rocker panel area, prior to installing the rubber over it. We have since restored the car, but covered "Britta"when painting, so that she lives on forever. Whoever Britta is/was is a mystery.... Volvo in Sweden tried looking it up from their factory workers in 1965, but they are only listed by last name. They are going to forward this picture to a newspaper in Sweden to see if someone comes forward... Pretty neat history and a pretty neat car. Still always hoping someone from Sweden would remember writing the name Britta on this car. %0D%0A%0D%0Ahttp://www.flickr.com/photos/blue65pv544/3642852516/%0D%0A http://www.brickboard.com/STORIES/volvo/1384806/1965_volvo_544_named_britta.html?rss=1 Sun, 8 Nov 2009 00:44 GMT 1965 Volvo 544 named Britta -posted by- KlausC Thanks for the great story. Thanks. all http://www.brickboard.com/STORIES/volvo/1380434/6_12_volt_conversion.html?rss=1 Mon, 19 Oct 2009 10:46 GMT What do you want to convert, engine too, or just accessories?.... -posted by- Ken C What do you want to convert?%0D%0AWhat I mean is, do you want to convert the entire car including the engine (ignition coil, distributor points, etc.), or only the accessories (e.g., radio, bulbs for lighting, etc.)?%0D%0A%0D%0AIf it's the engine, this will be hardest. You'll probably have to look into cobbling 12-volt stuff to work in your car -- for example, a new ignition coil and distributor points/condenser (putting 12 v into a coil designed for 6 will cook it; same for points). Some earlier 12-v cars had a resistor to reduce amperage to those components: during start-up when the starter was spinning, they got a full, "12 volt" equivalent shock for a hot spark, then for running the resistor was in the circuit to limit current. If you can't change those parts, you may have to resort to some resistor like that. Consider a modern, solid-state ignition, too, so you don't have to redo your points every few thousand miles.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs for the car body's accessories (radio and lights), there are converters available (try hot-rod shops). The fuse bus for these things will be fed through the converter.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe remaining problem will be certain gauges -- maybe the temp and fuel gauge -- which will be relatively easy to solve. They're usually (I don't know about your car specifically) designed to work off a constant voltage (via a regulator, electromechanical, this being on car predating solid-state electronics) source slightly below ordinary battery voltage, in order to show reliable readings: maybe at 4.5 or 5 volts (just guessing) vs your car's original 6+ volts. You will have to find the specs for the original voltage "regulator", and then you can easily match this with a modern solid-state (discrete chip) voltage regulator of that same, low voltage, rating to keep them accurate.%0D%0A%0D%0AGood luck.%0D%0A http://www.brickboard.com/STORIES/volvo/1381538/want_convert_engine_just_accessories.html?rss=1 Sat, 24 Oct 2009 00:09 GMT Irv Gordon featured in the July/August AARP magazine..good reading! -posted by- Harryl Just got my AARP magazine today, and on page 22, at the beginning of an article titled "A Keeper is Cheaper," is a picture of Irv with his P1800S. A lot of snow in a short time. I get a call from a friend of mine. "Tony, can you make an emergency run for me?" One of his neighbors was stuck on a hill going to her house. She was too scared to back down the hill, the car was sideways on this Rural road and she couldn't get up the hill. %0D%0AI just put the snows on the Volvo that morning because, well, it was going to snow. I grab a shovel, my gloves and head out to see if I could at the very least get it down the hill to my friends driveway (out of harms way).%0D%0A%0D%0AI get to his street and as I look up the hill I see 4 cars facing every way but Parallel with the road. You had to see the tire tracks too. they were 'Z' shaped all the way up the hill to where they were stuck. Too funny.%0D%0AI Slolum through the cars to the top of the hill and get out of my car.%0D%0A%0D%0ANot one of the four cars wee more then 3 years old. None of them had snow tires. 2 of them were Cadillac STS's or CTS's with tires that had to be 12" wide. %0D%0AAnyway, the women get out of their cars and were ALL to nervous to do any more. They seemed more then happy to hand me (a stranger) the keys. I got 3 cars down to the bottom of the hill. The woman in the car that I got the call on originally had a 6 speed manual, I managed to 'walk' that one up the hill and into her driveway. These people marvelled over how I got to the top of the hill without hesitation, I played it down... "Yeah, This old Volvo has gotten me around for 20 years, it runs good, never felt I needed to replace it."%0D%0AMy friend calls me back when I got home, He was laughing after his neighbor called to thank him for sending me and telling the story of the multiple cars that ended up on the hill. %0D%0ACan someone please tell me why when the snow is dumping down and they call off school, Why do parents feel it is safer to take their unequiped car to go retrieve their kids instead of letting that nice heavy School Bus take them home? I absolutely love pre-Y2K Volvos and what they bring to the table. Not just for their engineering, but for the fact that they tend to be conservatively driven and well maintained. %0D%0A%0D%0AI'll give you the last two. Both were Volvo 940's.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe first one I picked up in exchange for doing an impound lot auction in Powder Springs, Georgia (auto auctioneer here). 1994 Volvo 940 sedan in black with all the options. It looked a bit rough on the outside. But had Volvo OEM components throughout the engine bay and sounded brilliant. A half hour of auction work and I literally drove her home.%0D%0A%0D%0AReplace the front wheel bearing, one tire, an oil change, gave her a $300 paint job (basecoat/clearcoat), and cleaned her up on the inside. She was perfect.... well, near perfect. There were assorted rips and tears in the seats due to the grandson who had inherited the vehicle and promptly registered three DUI's and about six months of neglect. I was considering doing a full revamp on the interior since my real cost basis was $350 before I put in another $400 in the the items already mentioned. Sold her for $1400.%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0AThe second Volvo was a pristine 1994 Silver Volvo 940 Wagon with 242,000 miles. It had visited a local Volvo specialty shop 48 times over the last four years and ran like a clock. I bought her for $700 ($600 plus the auction fee) and gave her an alignment. That was it. Everything worked on it and my wife spent the next few months transporting the kids and the dog. I was seriously considering keeping it. But I ended up selling it with 247k for $1700 to a really nice Volvo enthusiast who deserved a truly great vehicle. I hope she'll see the north side of 350k.%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0AOverall I would break the Volvos down this way...%0D%0A%0D%0A850/S70 models are the most profitable%0D%0AS80 the most problematic%0D%0A960 the most quirky%0D%0A240 the most authentic%0D%0A740/940 the most defect free%0D%0A%0D%0ATomorrow I will be most likely trading my auctioneering services for yet another Volvo. It's either a 740 or 940 they have in this sale. We'll find out tomorrow. %0D%0AAs for the rest of the Volvo fleet post-2000. I've only sold one S40 and have yet to partake of most of the other modern Volvos except the S80 which is not my cup of tea. I have no love for any of them except perhaps the C30.%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A http://www.brickboard.com/STORIES/volvo/1314203/buying_fixing_selling.html?rss=1 Sat, 15 Nov 2008 04:00 GMT Buying, Fixing, and Selling -posted by- will rehsper There's a fellow near me who has a revolving door of late model 245's that he lists on ebay.
