Hi, new guy, old Volvo, long post (more of a novella really) -posted by- someday 1981 Volvo 240, B21FMPG (I think), K-Jet, M46%0D%0ACall me someday. Last year my Nixon-era '71 Cadillac dropped its driveshaft while I was trying to rock it out of a snowbank. It had lots of other issues and burned gas like it never heard of OPEC, so instead of paying to have it towed to a shop knowing they'd never be able to get parts, I sold it to a junkyard for $125. Not bad, considering I paid $1350 for it in 1997 and drove the hell out of it, sometimes with 7 or 8 souls aboard. May she rust in peace. Maybe some bit of it will end up in someone's restoration and it will live on after a fashion.%0D%0A%0D%0AThen began the search for a new ride. I watched CraigsList looking for something older and interesting, you know, something that doesn't look exactly like every other Camry/Accord/Cavalier on the road. Something I could wrench on myself. I almost bought a '76 BMW 2002 (neat car!) but when I consulted the '02 forum they told me that if I drove it on salty winter roads it would disintegrate within a year, maybe two. Scratch that. Then I spotted an ad for an '81 Volvo two-door with some rust and 200,??? miles on it. (Broken odometer.) Test drove it, looked for major problems, found none, and drove it home for $600. Should have had it inspected by a pro, but that's water under the bridge.%0D%0A%0D%0ASo now I'm driving this car (240 dl? 242? I don't even know the nomenclature), titled, taxed, registered, and insured. The temp guage didn't budge and the heater didn't work, so with the help of this forum I replaced the thermostat without having to drain the coolant. Immediately the temp guage rose to 9 o'clock and held steady, but clouds of sweet-smelling vapor began to issue from under the dash, fogging up the windows, and the passenger-side carpet got soaked with slippery green liquid. Alas, the dreaded heater core! I ran a couple of doses of Bar's Leaks through the cooling system, and it seems to have stopped the leak, but I know it's just a temporary fix.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe steering pulled to the left, so I tried to adjust the power steering balance, but I guess I screwed it up because when I started the car, the steering jumped to full right lock. So I removed the PS belt and now I'm running with manual steering, which I kind of like. It feels tight and I could use the upper-body training. The boots on the rack were torn and someone had attempted to repair them with duct tape, so I just cut them off. What happens without these?%0D%0A%0D%0AThe brake failure light kept coming on, but when I topped up the resevoir with Dot 4 it would go out again. Eventually, I found the leak. You guessed it: the switch on the brake junction box. When I consulted this forum and learned that the whole unit must be replaced and the entire system bled, I took a shortcut and removed the switch, replacing it with a proper diameter and thread metric bolt. Stopped the leak. I know this defeats a potentially life saving feature, but right now I'm so broke I can't even pay attention. The pedal was still soft, so I tried to bleed the system, but all I had was myself and the emergency jack, which doesn't even fit the jack points on the chassis. (Must be from a different model.) Of course I broke two bleeder screws and got Dot 4 all over the place. Then I noticed that if I got on the pedal hard, the car would stop, but if I tried to apply it smooth and gentle-like, it would sink right to the floor with no desired effect. Classic master cylinder failure symptoms, right? Picked up an A1 Cardone rebuilt MC at O'Reilly's for $25, bench bled it, installed it, and then removed each front wheel and pushed the pads back in to push any air back up through the MC. Now the pedal is as firm as &#091insert sexual reference here&#093. Much better. Intermittent brake failure is scary as hell. I was literally driving with one hand on the e-brake and had to use it more than once. By the way, I grounded the brake warning switch wire to my plug-bolt using the rubber boot, so whenever I drive, the brake failure warning light glares at me to remind me of my half-assed repair.%0D%0A%0D%0AOther than that, the car seems to run well. Starts eaily, idles a little rough, accelerates nicely through all the gears, even the OD works, after I fixed the wiring. Out on the freeway I put it in 4th and pressed the button, the OD light came on, and I could hear and feel the OD kick in. I like the big clock, (keeps good time) but a stick-shift with no tach? What's that about? I think I'm leaking a little oil, probably because of crankcase overpressure. I'd like to clean the flame trap, but I understand it's hidden like the Lost Ark%0D%0Ain that warehouse full of crates. I want a relocation kit.%0D%0A%0D%0AEnough for now. There's a shop here in Indy that says they know Volvos and they'll do a safety and maintenance inspection for $80. Worth it?%0D%0A%0D%0AMy thanks to anyone who actually read this. %0D%0ASincerely,%0D%0Asomeday%0D%0A%0D%0AI'll post pics if can figure out how.%0D%0A http://www.brickboard.com/INTROS/volvo/1273352/hi_new_guy_old_volvo_long_post_novella_really.html?rss=1 Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:49 GMT Hi, new guy, old Volvo, long post (more of a novella really) -posted by- Wiglaf %0D%0A%0D%0AKinda makes me want to tear up a little. It's in pretty nice condition wise, It's black on a tan interior. The only issues i have with it is the sound system sucks beyond all belief which will soon be changed...lol. Anyway, I drove it home from this guy i bought it from garage, parked it in my driveway and washed, waxed and detailed it. I then went to start it and go out for a drive and it refused to start. All the warning lights would come on and it would refuse to start. I'm not that familiar with these types of cars but they guy i bought it from specializes in them so he sent a flatbed to pick it up and he's fixing it and i should have it back tomorrow hopefully. I'm looking forward to making it my own and going to some of these volvo gatherings.. Lately it has a really hard time with cold starts with excessive stumbling at idle then she will run fine after warmup with intermittent times of stumbling and complete loss of power (engine stays running) then it finds itself and starts running great again. The other day my wife was driving it and the car started to stumble with loss of power. She tried to drive it home and smoke came from under the dash that smelled like a cigar. She parked the car and hitched home. When I went to recover the car it started right up and ran perfectly home. I have since then taken the dash apart looking for burnt wires and cannot find anything. Would anyone guess these problems are related? Or help with the separate issues? Thanks. I would twist and remove only the far-outside, blinker connector. The other two are easier to remove and install when the headlight assembly is out of the car.%0D%0A2. The headlamp assembly is held by 4 bolts. Two at the top, one at the outside under the bumper and plastic trim (as described), and an additional one on the inside edge of the assembly that you have to shift the bumper down to get to. You can also remove the two bolts at the bottom holding the wiper motor to make removal easier. Take off the headlight wiper first -raise cap and remove nut.%0D%0A3. You only need to loosen and tap in the wheelwell torx screw on the side you are replacing. Then pry out the bumper center strips on both sides (not the middle), and remove the two bumper bolts. Also remove the six plastic retainers at the top center of the grill. Now you can work the bumper on the side you want forward and down to expose the headlight inner bolt& lower wiper moter bolts. Take out the two torx screws on the now-exposed outside plastic trim. Then pull the plastic out and use a 10mm wrench to take out the outside bolt.%0D%0A4. Don't forget to transfer the rubber surround at the top of the headlight assembly to the new assembly when swapping out. (I forgot and had to do the whole procedure again - only takes about 15 minutes with practice!).%0D%0A5. Put on lower clips before installing the new assembly, then put on the outside blinker connector in the car. This is a tight squeeze on the driver's side. Waterpump plyers helped me do the final turn to lock it in.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis is not hard with this procedure. Don't be afraid to do it yourself. I recently purchase this car and during the process of cleaning up the interior, I found a lot of things that needed cleaning. Check ipd, other suspects, they are avilable for around $40 each I think.%0D%0A%0D%0AJim http://www.brickboard.com/INTROS/volvo/1180047/volvo_142s_1969_air_filter.html?rss=1 Tue, 1 May 2007 20:07 GMT Volvo 142S 1969 Air filter -posted by- Serpent6 I'm not familiar with any other OEM style re-usable filters besides K&N for your model, but over the years I've put 3 different types of reusable filters on my 1970 142S (Mine has twin Strombergs with a similar box):%0D%0A%0D%0A1. The horizontal K&N box filter I had did seem tighter than the OEM, but fit if pressed down with some force. If it is still just a hair too tight, you could probably shave a little of the thick rubber on the bottom of the filter.%0D%0A%0D%0A2. Another option I tried was coverting to a cold-air box. Simply remove the horizontal filter and replace the existing air intake with a flexible intake pipe. Attach an Autozone style reusable cone filter at the end and you've got a simple cold air intake (lots of articles on this in the archives).%0D%0A%0D%0A3. My last and favorite installation was to purchase two round K&N filter assemblies designed specifically for my carburetor and bolt them directly to the carburetor. This setup is very similar to the pre-1969 Volvo 142S model. I liked this one best because the chrome housing gave the engine a handsome clean appearance and seemed to produce a little more power (and noise). A similar kit for SU carburetors is available through IPD. These round filters provide good air flow and should last for the life of the car.%0D%0A%0D%0AOptions #2 and #3 significantly alter the appearance of the OEM setup, and may affect engine warm-up to some degree. I live in the South and my old air intake was cracked, missing parts, and noisy, so I didn't mind ditching it.%0D%0A%0D%0ABest of luck! http://www.brickboard.com/INTROS/volvo/1179480/volvo_142s_1969_air_filter.html?rss=1 Sun, 29 Apr 2007 00:21 GMT New Here -posted by- SergeantStedanko Hi all,%0D%0A%0D%0AI bought a 1968 142S last fall and I'm heavily in the middle of getting it running well.
