The alternator wire runs to the large cable from the positive battery terminal. the connection to this cable is on the starter as I recall. All the accesories are connected to the positive battery cable through a smaller wire comming out of the positive battery terminal clamp. Somehow you need one terminal of the ammeter to the battery and the other terminal of the meter to the accessories and alternator. These two connect at differnet points under the hood. I would just get a voltmeter, much more simple. It will tell you the info you need and has much less chance of smoke and fire.
