91 240 cooling fan wiring problem 200 1991

Nick at FCP should be able to tell you what the nature of the three-wire connection is. Or ask him what make of fan (Hayden? Transcool?...) and go to the maker's website. Make sure you understand the connections before proceeding.

I'd bet it's a dual speed fan as mentioned. This means you will have to adapt the two-wire vehicle harness to the fan. If you have some jumper wires you can "bench test" the fan by having someone hold it securely (watch those fingers!) while you try various ways of connecting it to your battery. You need to note the connections that (A) cause the fan to rotate in the proper direction, (B) give either high or low speed in that direction.

I would first connect it in the low speed mode and see if that did the job. This will give longer fan life and least load on the car's electrical system. Otherwise, go to high speed.
