Why's My 965 Getting Awful Mileage? 900 1996

A know problem is the intake manifold gasket. The older red ones have to be replaced with the newer green ones. If you can hear a lot of hissing close to the cylinder 1 intake manifold runner, it's time for a new gasket. It should have been done a long time ago.

Is your check engine light on? Make sure it's working by turning the key on but do not start the car. All the idiot lights will turn on including the CEL, or MIL, malfunction indicator lamp.

Please report back.

Invest in an OBD-II code reader. The connector is on the passenger side of the handbrake lever under a small cover that slides to the left and has, as if by magic, OBD-II on the cover.

Make sure the timing belt is replaced in 70,000 mile increments. Use synthetic oil, such as Mobil-1 or Amzoil, change the radiator at 100K, ALL the hoses and use ONLY Volvo coolant.

Check the FAQ for more info.

Happy motoring.
