Here is something concrete: This is normal, there is no problem. Batch fired injectors are common in older cars. Sequential injection is more expensive and more complicated. Most of the benefits of this technology are at lower RPMS and the only super noticable gain would be in emissions testing.
I found you a decent article, no need to purchase a book. Take it with a grain of salt, YRMV but I am sure your sister's ECU hasn't been modified or anything like that.

If you think your mileage is way below average, I would suggest you check your timing and ignition system (plugs, etc) and take your injectors to a shop that does injector cleaning and have them tested and cleaned. When I still had bosch D-Jet that made a big difference in the way that my 73 Volvo 144 ran.
