another prehat plumbing question.... 200 1988

88/200/47,yesterday while fooling around under the hood, checked the preheat plumbing and it fell off the exhaust manifold. So I removed it exposing what to myself was a gorgeous piece of cast iron manifold which can now be painted.

The question is, can I just leave that damn shrouding off connecting the pre-heat tube with, say, a piece of wire to the manifold?

I know Volvo designed this system for the severe cold weather like where I live, but, is, "in the vicinity" of a warm manifold good enough? I drove it this morning, 30 degrees F, didn't seem to run differently than when it was all hooked up.
