Hi Barry,
Being a Volvo Dad is my hobby, started for many of the same reasons. The hardest part is when the car is way out of reach, like it will be for you. Others will work on it. You won't think of everything.
I'm just going to address the intake manifold decision. I say do it. Replace the gasket. Despite all the sniff and squirt techniques folks recommend to find vacuum leaks on a car with computerized mixture control, the only sure way of knowing your intake manifold gasket is good is a smoke test or put a new one on.
The gaskets are cheap, and separating the manifold is one of the easiest jobs. (Some of the books mention draining coolant. Disregard that - it applied to carbed models.) The nuts are never stuck, and there are only 8 of them plus the bolt on the support bracket. Work from the exhaust side, and be careful with the nut all the way toward the firewall; i.e. use a magnet or something sticky in your socket. No need to disconnect any fuel.
