Once you have the end of the pipe clean the round square shoulder seal in installed on the pipe first. A little RTV not only insures a good seal but also acts as a lubricant to allow the seal to be pushed into the correct positon in the pump. I put a little on the pipe and slide the seal into place and then a little more around the outside of the seal before carefully pushing it into the back of the waterpump and installing the nut and the bolt.
