Float bowl leaking fuel? 444-544

I have a pair of SU HS6 carbs on my B18, and have noticed that the float bowls seem to leak fuel. This is especially noticeable when I have the choke on, but based on my current mileage (15 MPG) I'm thinking that this is happening quite regularly.

I've looked around and see two possible issues:
- A problem with the float itself (and the valve not closing)
- A problem with the fuel pump (too much pressure).

My car is equipped with a mechanical fuel pump that seems fairly stock, and the carbs were rebuilt fairly recently, so I think its unlikely there is a float issue. Is it possible for the mechanical pump to pump out enough fuel to override the float? If so, I can put in a regulator (but I'm not sure what PSI I should regulate it to).

Also, it looks like I can pull the bowl apart without having to pull off the whole carb...or messing with anything else (i.e., avoiding having to re-balance/tune the carbs). Does that make sense?

Thoughts? Ideas?

thanks
