Maybe one of the connectors on the back of the inst. cluster. I know that on some older BMW's that if the bulb for battery/charging does not light, the alternator will not charge the battery. Actually part of the charging circuit. A burnt out or inop bulb cases a dead battery. I think I would try reseating the connectors on the inst. cluster.
