They take 2x the current to make the same light output, more overloading your marginal supply. And as soon as you get the problem corrected - they'll be flashbulbs. Are you saying that you measure only 9-10V at all light circuits (brake, tail, each signal)? This is an important question that might lead to an answer at the other end of the car.
