Regarding high speed collisions...crash testing is done is at 35 mph if I'm not mistaken. Tests done at 60 mph off-set may demonstrate a machine's ability to withstand the impact, but they don't speak to the human body's ability to absorb energy. Did Top Gear say anything about the probability of survival of occupants in their experiment? They did when they put a Smartcar into a jersey barrier at 70 mph. They were amazed that the passenger cage didn't give, the passenger door opened and then they said 'but of course the human body could not survive the energy being imparted to it.'
The safety device not being talked in this thread is the driver.
I'm glad the kid is OK; He wasn't fulfilling his duty as a safety device though.
