Replacing Front Wheel Hubs 900 1992

Dear dkollbaum,

May this find You well. These hubs should have a working life of 250,000-300,000 miles. Only rarely have Brickboarders posted regarding the need to replace these hubs.

I had to have hubs replaced, as a result of a road construction hazard: incompetent and/or negligent supervisors allowed a 3"-tall asphalt layer, facing oncoming traffic, to be left unfeathered. It was akin to hitting a curb at highway speeds. The impact was so hard, that the bearings left marks on the bearing races, which are made of very hard steel. I had the strut housings, cartridges, and mounts replaced.

While I did not do this work myself (the construction firm's insurance paid for the replacement work), I'm familiar with how hubs are replaced.

The torque specification for the axle nut is 74 pound feet + 45 degrees (Volvo pocket data booklet - Cars 𖘴, 850, 900] 1991-1996, 700/900, p. 120).

When handling the hubs, care is required to keep the bearings fully seated. If the outer race shifts, and a bearing moves from its position, lay the hub on a bench, restore the bearing to its position, and use your fingers gently to push the outer race into place. There is no need for any force to be applied or for any tool to be used, other than your fingers. You might want to use a cardboard tube - of the same diameter as the stub axle - to hold everything in place, as you slide the hub onto the stub axle.

As the axle nut is a mission-critical part - a failure will be catastrophic - I would not re-use the axle nut (Part #1387624). This nut costs about $9, at a Volvo dealer.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
