EXHAUST FUMES INVADING 1800ES CABIN 1800

Can anyone offer any help on curing exhaust fumes from entering the cabin of my 1800ES? A Volvo mechanic that knows these cars said that the problem derives from the angling of the tailpipe. I had a custom exhaust put on which runs straight thru (exits under the bumper). I believe the factory had the exit under the corner of the bumper. I guess the weak point is the hatch glass seal....just a guess. I about passed out while driving it awhile back.(had the windows down which may have created a vacuum into the cabin) Thanks for all your assistance.
