I didn't know that at the time and tossed the broken motor with the black glop still on it. Later I pulled the new one and used this gray block of... ?caulk? I found at the hardware store for about $3 to seal the shaft that goes through the firewall. Seems to be holding up OK. It was wrapped in white plastic and didn't have any brand or other name on it, about the consistency of modeling clay, found in the HVAC section.
