I just got done with a round of frustration on a 4.3L Vortec in my wife's AstroVan. In my case, the codes found didn't really point to the real problem anyway, it took some careful parts replacement (one thing at a time) to figure out what the problem was. Fortunately I hit the problem on the second part I replaced. Does it make the 'rod knock' sound only while driving, or does it do it while in Park also?
