Thermostat question: Is a clicking sound normal? 700 1992

Cold engine, grab the upper hose, squeeze, hear a squish in the plastic reservor tank and a click in the thermostat housing. In a cold engine, shouldn't the thermostat be quiet?

I ask because of the jumpy thermostat gauge in the cluster and the possible bad thermostat issue.
